everything happens for a reason part 11 - zuko x fem!reader
Memories, where'd you go?
part 10 | masterlist | part 12
a/n: alternative name for this fic: y/n gets a crush on every pretty girl she meets. yue, katara, and now suki. she can't help it (and she questions why they're all connected to sokka in some way lmaoo)
anyways, this is kind of filler but it establishes some more with relationships and finallyyy gets us into ba sing se at the end. i know it's a lil annoying because there's a lot of episode-to-text writing, but i promise it'll get more freeform as it goes on
also i know that i just posted something yesterday but i have literally zero patience. like i cant hold chapters i have to post them as soon as i write them loll
wc: 5.3k
warning(s): some feels over zuko as per usual, but overall a pretty tame chapter
chapter title comes from memories by panic! at the disco!
Zuko could barely sleep anymore.
He didn’t know when his life became so complicated, but he wasn’t a fan of it.
Back when it was just him, his crew, and the open sea — it was simple. He had a job, a straightforward mission. Find the Avatar, capture him, return home to the Fire Nation and regain his honor.
Now, the waters were more muddied than ever. Now on the run from the Fire Nation just like the boy he was chasing, all he really felt nowadays was anger.
Angry at the world for setting him on this path, angry at the Avatar for refusing to see what was necessary, his sister and her friends for turning against him, angry at the waterbender for making things so damn hard.
He didn’t want to hurt her. A part of him wished that she had never come back into his life, if it meant he wouldn’t have to constantly be fighting against her. He hated himself for the thought, but maybe it would have been easier for her to remain a memory of a lover than his active enemy.
Late at night, when he was reaching fruitlessly for sleep that would never come, he saw her face. The carefree energy from their childhood morphed into the shock and disappointment from both the North and their fight with Azula, and…
It made him wonder what in Agni had happened to them.
He—
He didn’t know. The way he felt about her, it was different than anything he had experienced before. Zuko didn’t know what it was, but he understood that it was special. And now… it felt like he had just thrown it all away.
Zuko couldn’t stop thinking about what had happened with her in that town — what he had done to her.
He had burned her to try and get to the Avatar, and he hadn’t even allowed a glance back at the damage he had done. He had heard her cry out in pain, pain he had caused, and he didn’t even look back.
What had happened to them? What had happened to him?
He kept telling himself that the mission was the only thing that mattered. And it was, wasn’t it? Capture the Avatar, regain his honor, get his old life back and finally be enough for his father. He didn’t have time for friends, or for these feelings he had, or— or for anything but capturing the Avatar. Because the Avatar was the key to everything, to his honor, and that was all that mattered.
But now…
Now, he didn’t know what he was supposed to do. He didn’t know what was right, or what was wrong, or what path was the one he had to take.
Zuko just wished things could be like they used to be.
~~~~~~~~~~
She didn’t really know when everything had become a mess again.
It all started out fine, like it usually did. Toph had become fully integrated into the group, any past squabbles put to rest in the name of a stronger friendship emerging between all five of them. Katara continued to work on Aang’s waterbending (oftentimes Y/N joining them in their sessions) while Toph slowly but steadily beat earthbending into him — literally.
They had all been working hard for so long that, by decree of Aang, it was ‘vacation time’. They would all get to pick out places they wanted to spend as a break, and after it was over they would get back to work.
Aang had chosen some sort of field with musical groundhogs, and Y/N had opted to revisit an Earth Kingdom village that she had passed through on her journey to the North. Sokka had complained the whole time about how they were ‘wasting valuable planning time’, but had finally conceded after the promise of ‘all the planning his heart could desire’ from Katara after their mini-vacations were over.
Y/N was actually feeling somewhat relaxed for once, but she had forgotten the golden rule — never let your guard down. Everytime she let her guard down, something bad happened without fail. So it shouldn’t have been any surprise with what happened in the desert.
Because after one trip to the Misty Palms Oasis and a journey into the desert with a professor to a long lost library, Appa had been taken by desert raiders.
It was… less than favourable. During their escape from the library, Professor Zei had insisted on staying behind, and now the five of them were stuck in the middle of the desert with no way out and zero guidance. Add some brewing tensions between Aang and Toph because of her being there when Appa was taken, and they had a recipe for a huge disaster.
And a disaster they had. Multiple disasters, actually.
There was only so much she and Katara could do to hold the group together, but by some miracle, they made it out of the desert with only one Avatar State mishap.
(And an incident with cactus juice, but… she didn’t really want to talk about that.)
....at least they had the information about the Eclipse. That was about the only thing keeping her together at the moment.
They had to get the information to the Earth King so they could formulate an attack with his warriors, but without Appa, they had to resort to more traditional methods of travel. Add in one passport problem, and that was how Y/N found herself braving the Serpent’s Pass alongside a refugee family with a baby on the way.
It was… intimidating, to say the least. Despite being surrounded by her element, Y/N didn’t feel any safer from the challenge that faced them. She took a deep breath, trying to tamp down on her fear the way her mother had taught her, as she followed the group, but her thoughts were soon interrupted.
“Hey.” She turned to see who the voice belonged to and was greeted by the girl that had teased Sokka early — Suki, if she remembered correctly. “I haven’t seen you around; are you with the Avatar or that family?”
“I’m with Aang,” Y/N explained. “I’m from the North, and they offered me a spot with them after they helped us defend our tribe against the Fire Nation. I’ve been with them ever since.” Suki nodded as they settled into a comfortable stride.
“That’s cool. Are you a waterbender?”
She gestured to her waterskin and smiled. “Yeah. I’ve been training with Aang and Katara ever since I left.” Y/N then turned her gaze back to Suki, raising an inquisitive brow. “Your makeup — what’s it for? I heard you talking about the Kyoshi Warriors back there; is that some kind of thing with Avatar Kyoshi?”
Suki grinned, her every expression heightened by the sharp reds and blacks above her eyes. “We’re a group of all-female warriors that use the teachings of Avatar Kyoshi and her partner Rangi to defend our home and the place she founded, Kyoshi Island. I’m the leader of our village section.”
“Wow,” she murmured, her eyes falling to the ground for a moment before finding their way back up to the warrior. “That’s really cool. You’re really cool.”
She laughed and shrugged. “Thanks. I’ve been training as a warrior for almost my whole life, so it just comes naturally. I like being able to protect people, and there’s no better way to pay back my home for all it’s done for me like protecting the whole village.”
“Wow,” she repeated with a small laugh of her own. “That’s really brave. I gotta say, I’m kinda jealous — I would love to see what would happen if Master Pakku met you all. Katara literally had to beat the sexism out of him in order to train to be a master.”
Suki chuckled. “Sounds like what I had to do with Sokka. Guess it’s a thing with Water Tribe guys, huh?”
At the mention of Sokka, she internally laughed. There had to be some kind of connection between the two of them, the way their interests kept aligning. “Sokka… he’s had it hard. I can’t blame him that much for any kind of attitude he had before he met you. Pakku, on the other hand? He had to have had something better to do than fight teenage girls.”
“You would think so, right?” Suki agreed. “And Sokka… I know. He’s got a heart of gold underneath all that, he just needed a little push to get it out.” As Y/N glanced over at the girl, noticing a slight pink tint under the white makeup, she gasped.
“La’s fins, are you two a thing?” she exclaimed with a grin.
Suki flushed even harder as she suddenly became very interested in the ocean around her, but she couldn’t help the smile on her lips. “No! I mean— yes— but… but—” she stopped to gather her thoughts before making eye contact again with a sheepish smile. “We’re not… really a thing, but… I do like him a lot. I didn’t really think I was going to see him again after they left the island, so this is really nice.”
“Then what are you waiting for?” Y/N asked. “I can already tell that he cares about you — have you seen how careful he’s being with you?”
“Well—” Whatever kind of excuse Suki would’ve made up was interrupted by a rock falling out just under Than, one of the refugees they were with, saved in the nick of time with Toph’s earthbending.
“I’m okay!” he reassured, but no sooner had the words left his mouth before the Fire Nation ship in the distance started firing.
“They’ve spotted us!” Sokka yelled. “Let’s go, let’s go!”
Aang flicked his glider open and deflected the blast, and Katara grabbed Y/N’s hand as they all began to run. Another blast rocked the mountain, causing several boulders to fall just above Suki. Y/N didn’t even have time to shout out a warning before Sokka tackled her out of the way, but it was ultimately more of Toph’s quick earthbending that saved him.
“Suki, are you okay?” Sokka brushed dust and pebbles off of her uniform as he examined her, and once he was satisfied he grabbed her hand and helped her up. “You have to be more careful! Come on!”
As the two of them caught up to Y/N and Katara, she gave Suki a knowing look. The warrior only blushed once again and glanced away.
After hours of navigating the pass, they were only about halfway through. Sokka made the executive decision to set up camp for the night to give everyone time to rest, and then they would get up at the crack of dawn to finish their trip. It only took a few minutes for Y/N to get a fire going, and soon everyone had settled in with their sleeping bags. Sokka got up from his spot as Suki wandered closer to the edge, and Katara nudged Y/N with her shoulder.
“Hey. How are your hands doing?”
“They’re fine,” she answered with a small smile, flipping her hands over as proof. Where there were once red burn scars on her palms only tiny white marks remained — one benefit to healing via waterbending was that most injuries were able to fade away completely after enough sessions. Her burns weren’t very serious and she was able to heal them almost immediately, so both her and Katara were sure that the marks would be completely gone soon.
The mental scars wouldn’t fade as easily.
“That’s good. And you’re taking care of them, right? Like, you’re not beating up people while we’re not looking?”
Y/N grinned. “No. I think I’ll leave that to Toph.”
Katara chuckled and nodded, turning her hands over in a final examination before nodding. “Good,” she repeated. The silence between them, although comfortable, stretched out for a little too long before she spoke again, this time much quieter. “He did this to you.”
“Katara…”
“I know,” she said. “I know you probably don’t want to hear this from me, or really at all, but… I’m worried about you. Zuko isn’t good for you. Every time we’ve run into him, he’s hurt you. And you deserve so much more than that.”
“You don’t understand,” she countered. “You don’t know Zuko like I do. You weren’t there when I was. I know you think I’m insane for still believing in him, but I— I can’t let go of him, Katara. I know the Zuko I love is still in there somewhere, and I have to try and find it. For me and for him.”
Katara’s eyes were full of nothing but sympathy as she sighed — it was obvious she didn’t believe her words, but in true fashion she was still trying her best to be supportive.
“Okay. I don’t understand it, but… I don’t think I can change your mind.” Y/N chuckled sadly and nodded, Katara’s piercing gaze meeting her own once more. “It’s just… Why are you playing with fire when you know you’re going to get burned?”
And for once, Y/N didn’t have an answer for her friend.
~~~~~~~~~
The night went by quickly, which Y/N was thankful for. It meant that the nightmares didn’t last as long.
After a quick headcount to make sure no one had fallen off the pass overnight and an even quicker gathering of their things, they set off to finish their journey.
It went just as well as she had expected — a giant serpent, the namesake of the pass, had attacked them while crossing through an underwater section. Thankfully, she was able to aid Katara and Aang in defeating it with waterbending with no casualties
But in the wake of one disaster there was always another, and before Y/N knew it a baby had been born. She was mostly there for moral support — Katara had it all handled, and Y/N didn’t expect anything less.
But finally, they had made it across the pass, and they were so close to Ba Sing Se that she could almost smell the city air. Sadly, though, that meant it was time for them to part ways — Aang to find Appa, and Suki back to her warriors. After some sad but hopeful goodbyes with Aang, it was time to bid farewell to Suki.
“Are you sure you can’t travel a little longer with us?” Y/N questioned, apparently not above pleading to try and get the girl to stay. “You’re— you’re amazing, and we’d really love to have you with us.”
“I can’t even imagine what travelling with the Avatar would be like,” she smiled, causing Y/N to get her hopes up for just a moment before they fell back down. “But I can’t stay. I have to get back to the Kyoshi Warriors.”
Y/N sighed, her gaze falling slightly downcast. “I get that. I just really wish you could stay. Or that I could meet your warriors. You seriously don’t know how cool you are, Suki.”
“Well, if you’re ever in town on Kyoshi Island, find us. I’m sure we’ll be able to work something out and do you one better than just meeting them all,” she said with a grin. “I think it’d be pretty cool to have the first waterbending Kyoshi Warrior.”
Y/N was unable to prevent the heat rushing to her cheeks as she smiled shyly, once again averting eye contact. “That would be amazing. I’ll have to find my way back there after the war.”
Suki bumped shoulders with her, causing a startled laugh to spill from her lips. “We’d love to have you.”
“Wait, why does it sound like you’re saying goodbye to her?” Sokka questioned as he walked up to the two of them. Y/N winked at Suki and gestured at him with her head, walking off before Suki could protest to find Katara.
The conversation the two girls were sharing was an extremely thinly veiled excuse to eavesdrop on the lovebirds, and when they kissed Y/N actually had to hold back a scream.
Sokka deserved this. She knew how much he beat himself up over every little thing that went wrong, and it was about time he got to relax even for a moment. She only hoped that Suki would be in their corner of the world sooner rather than later.
What could she say? She was already fantasizing about life as a Kyoshi Warrior.
~~~~~~~~~
Although they had parted ways, they soon found themselves reunited with Aang to stop yet another Fire Nation threat.
“For the love of Kuruk,” Y/N murmured as she stared into the distance, her eyes wide at the sight of a large mechanical drill. “That was Ty Lee who just took down all those soldiers. And if she’s here, Mai and Azula are with her too. Guys, It’s one thing to stop this drill, it’s another thing to take those three down with it.”
“The question is, how do we do it?” Aang questioned.
“Why can nothing ever be easy?” Sokka lamented. His gaze remained trained on the drill for a moment before he realized theirs were on him. “Why are you all looking at me?”
“You’re the idea guy,” Aang said.
“Wait, so I’m the only one who can ever come up with a plan?” he protested. “That’s a lot of pressure!”
“And also the complaining guy,” Katara muttered, drawing a chuckle out from Y/N.
“Now that part I don’t mind,” Sokka admitted.
“Well, Sokka— you were a huge help in the North, and you figured out a way to defeat the Fire Nation during that eclipse at the library! Plus, there’s all that stuff that Katara told me you did before I joined.” She patted him on the back. “If anyone can figure out how to take that thing down, it’s you.”
He shrugged nonchalantly, his ego only slightly bolstered. “...okay. I think I can do it.”
“That’s the spirit!” she said with a smile.
Unfortunately, that smile faded as a young guard came running up to the wall. “Excuse me, Avatar and friends — I’ve heard that you’ve dealt with that… that pink girl down there before.” They nodded and he continued. “It would do us a great deal of help if you could come down and look at our injured soldiers, then.”
Y/N and Katara nodded in unison and started to follow the guard, the remaining three trailing after them. They ended up inside the wall, in what looked like an infirmary of sorts with all the cots and soldiers lying around, and the two waterbenders exchanged looks.
“You know what to do?” Katara asked.
Y/N hummed in acknowledgment, and they both knelt down next to separate cots. “This definitely looks like Ty Lee’s work,” she murmured as she bent water up from the pot and molded it over the man’s arm.
“What’s wrong with him?” the general questioned. “He doesn’t look injured.”
“His chi is blocked,” Katara explained. “Who did this to you?”
“Two girls ambushed us,” the soldier said, moving his arm as he regained feeling. “One of them hit me with a bunch of quick jabs and suddenly I couldn't earthbend anymore and I could barely move. Then she cartwheeled away.”
Katara sighed as she bent the water back into the pot. “You were right, Y/N. That was Ty Lee — she doesn’t look dangerous, but she knows the human body and its weak point. It’s like she takes you down from the inside.”
As if struck by lightning, Sokka lit up. “Oh, oh, oh! What you just said — that’s how we’re going to take down the drill; the same way Ty Lee took down all those earthbenders!”
“By hitting its pressure points!” Toph exclaimed with a grin.
The breakthrough brought a steely determination to Aang’s features as he looked out into the distance. “We’ll take it down from the inside.”
~~~~~~~~~
Like everything they did, it seemed so simple on paper. But now that she was actually inside the drill, it felt a lot more nerve wracking. Toph opted to stay outside where she could see and try to slow down the drill with the earth at her disposal, which left the four of them to somehow take it down from the inside.
Sokka led them through a hallway with a myriad of valves and pipes as he thought out loud. “I need a plan of this machine — some schematics that show what the inside looks like. Then we can find its weak points.”
“Where are we gonna get something like that?” Aang asked.
Sokka thought for a moment before he took his machete out and hacked a valve off a pipe. Y/N instinctively took a step back and shielded her face from the hot steam. “What are you doing?” she cried. “Someone’s gonna hear us!”
“That’s the point!” he exclaimed. “A machine this big needs engineers to run it, and when something breaks—”
“Someone will come down to fix it!” Katara finished with a smile at Aang, a sentiment the boy returned happily.
It was surprisingly easy to take down the engineer once he arrived — with a little bit of frozen mist on Katara’s end, they had the plans they needed. Sokka’s expertise combined with the blueprints got them to the beginning of the outer shell.
“Wow,” Sokka muttered. “It looks a lot thicker than it does in the plans. We’re gonna have to work pretty hard to cut through that.”
Katara crossed her arms. “What’s this ‘we’ stuff? The three of us are gonna have to do all the work.”
“Look, I’m the plan guy!” Sokka explained with a gesture to himself. “You three are the ‘cut up stuff with waterbending’ guys. Together, we’re Team Avatar!”
Katara and Aang looked wholly unamused while Y/N chuckled. “Team Avatar. I like it.”
“Thank you,” he smiled. “At least someone appreciates my genius.”
“Tui’s gills, why do you have to keep boosting his ego?” Katara complained. “Let’s just get this done before it gets worse.”
The three of them got in position — Katara and Aang on opposite sides so they could pass the stream of water between them, and Y/N making the point of the triangle to work on the other side on her own. They were hoping it would be more efficient being able to cut through both sides at the same time, but it was proving to be much more difficult than they had imagined — halfway through the three of them were already exhausted.
By some feat of strength they were able to completely cut through the brace, but their hard work didn’t pay off in quite the way they had imagined — when the beam only shifted a few inches she groaned.
“Oh, you have got to be kidding me,” she breathed as she wiped sweat off of her forehead.
“At this rate,” Katara paused to inhale deeply, “we won’t do enough damage before the drill reaches the wall.”
“I don’t know how many more of those I have in me,” Aang said sadly.
A large creak suddenly rang throughout the large chamber, and they all looked up for the source.
“Did you hear that?” Sokka asked, already backing up to make an exit. “We took it down! We gotta get out of here, fast!”
Just as they reached the door on the other side, a crackle followed by the sound of a man’s voice dashed their hopes. “Congratulations, crew. The drill has made contact with the wall of Ba Sing Se. Start the countdown to victory!”
A collective silence hung in the air between them, the threat now even more imminent as their situation sunk in. Mai and Ty Lee had proven effective in taking down any Earth Kingdom threat posed at them, and despite Toph’s skill they knew she couldn’t take down something like this on their own.
They either had to figure out a way to destroy this drill, or the Fire Nation was going to make it into the city.
Sokka ran back over to the brace and pushed against it, putting all his strength into the feat but to no avail. “Come…. on! Move!”
Katara started pacing around in a small circle, crossing her arms again as she tried to think of something. “This is bad. This is really bad.”
“Sokka, that’s not going to work!” Y/N didn’t mean to snap, but the grinding of metal on metal combined with her nervousness got to her. She sighed and ran her hand over her face. “I— I’m sorry. But it’s still not going to work.”
He groaned as he leaned against the brace. “We’re putting everything we have into busting these things, but it’s taking too long!”
Suddenly, Aang jumped up from the ground with stars in his eyes. “Maybe we don’t need to cut all the way through! Toph — she’s been teaching me that you shouldn’t put a hundred percent of your energy in any one strike. Sokka, get in a fighting stance.”
Sokka complied and as Aang talked through his points, he demonstrated it on Sokka. “You've got to be quick and accurate. Hit a series of points and break your opponent's stance. And when he's reeling back, you deliver the final blow. His own weight becomes his downfall, literally.”
As Sokka fell over from the attack, Katara lit up. “So we just need to weaken the braces instead of cutting all the way through—”
“—then I can go to the top of this thing and deliver the final blow!” Aang finished.
Y/N helped Sokka up from the ground, his spirits not dampened at all. “Then boom! This whole thing goes down!”
“Then what are we waiting for?” Y/N asked, flexing her fingers to refresh them for all the bending she was going to have to do. “Aang, Katara and I can handle the braces. Focus on getting up to the top before anyone sees you.”
He nodded and they all met each other with determined eyes. “Everyone inside that wall, the whole world — they’re all counting on us.”
“Here, take this. You need this more than I do. ” Katara took her waterskin off and handed it to Aang. “Good luck. And be careful.”
Y/N noticed a slight blush on her cheeks and she had to hold back her smile. That was definitely something she was going to tease her friend about later — when they weren’t trying to stop the Fire Nation from breaking into Ba Sing Se.
“I will,” he assured. Aang slung the strap of the waterskin around his shoulder and took off, and Y/N and Katara got to work breaking through the rest of the braces.
With the knowledge that they only had to cut through half of each column and the revitalization that came from having a plan, their work went by much quicker. Just when they finished the final brace, it all went wrong.
“Good work, Team Avatar!” Sokka cheered. “Now we— Y/N, duck!”
She didn’t question Sokka as she immediately dropped to the ground, something she was immensely thankful for as a blast of blue fire seared past her. Her eyes snapped up to the source of the attack and narrowed in recognition.
“Of course they’re here,” she growled as she pulled herself back up. “We gotta go, now!”
Katara and Sokka nodded and they all started running. Bringing up the rear, Y/N was able to hear Azula’s words right before they split off into an intersection:
“Follow them! I’m going to find the Avatar.”
Sure enough, when she allowed a glance back, Mai and Ty Lee were closing in on them. She flicked open the cap of her waterskin and bent some out, managing to freeze it at just the right moment to block the incoming daggers from Mai. Still running, she melted it quickly and let it fall to the ground before freezing it again, creating some ice on the ground that would hopefully give them a few more seconds of leeway.
“That should give us some time!” she yelled as they turned a corner, finally turning her attention back to the path in front of them. “Any idea how we’re gonna get out of this thing?”
“Maybe!” Sokka yelled back, slowing to a stop as they came to a dead end, a large hatch the only thing at their disposal. He started tugging on the wheel in an attempt to open it, and when Y/N joined in they were able to wrench it open.
“Slurry pipeline?” Katara frowned as she read the sign on the wall and looked at Sokka. “What does that mean?”
“It’s rock and water mixed together,” he explained as they looked into the rushing liquid underneath the hatch. “It means it’s our way out!”
Katara nodded and climbed in, Sokka following close after. The sound of metal footsteps got closer and closer, and Y/N ducked inside just as Mai’s knives clanked against the hatch. Never before had she been so happy to be floating in a stream of slurry.
The rest of their mission went by surprisingly easy — at least, on their end. All it took was some waterbending — earthbending, when Toph joined them — and encouragement from Sokka (though unappreciated by Katara). Whatever magic Aang was working at the top of the drill had done its job, because soon enough the drill had collapsed in on itself.
And now, they had reunited on the top of the wall overlooking the sunset. After the chaos that had been their day, it was nice to just relax for even a moment. And there was no better way to do so than with her friends.
“I just want to say, good effort out there, Team Avatar!” Sokka exclaimed as he threw an arm around Y/N’s shoulder.
“Enough with the ‘Team Avatar’ stuff,” Katara said dryly. “No matter how many times you say it, it’s not going to catch on.”
“I like it, Sokka,” Y/N smiled. “I’ve liked it this whole time.”
“You always appreciate my genius, Y/N,” he mused. “That’s why I appreciate you.” She laughed and leaned her head against his shoulder as he continued to list off names.
“How about… the Boomeraang squad! Eh? See, it’s good because it’s boomerang, and it has Aang in it—”
“Yeah Sokka,” Toph interrupted. “We got it.”
Aang grinned and scratched his head. “I kinda like that one.”
“The Aang Gang. Ooh, the Fearsome Fivesome!”
“You’re crazy,” Toph muttered as she walked away.
“Wait, Sokka—” Y/N pulled away from him and held up her pointer finger. “Aang Gang — what if we combine it, so it’s just the Gaang? But still with Aang’s name?”
And at that moment, Sokka looked more proud than ever. “Oh, you— you are a genius.”
“Oh, spirits,” Katara groaned. “Why do you insist on encouraging him?”
“You’re just jealous of our name-making abilities,” Sokka said haughtily.
She rolled her eyes but couldn’t stop herself from laughing. “You two are completely ridiculous, you know that? Let’s just get into the city before the trains stop running.”
Y/N and Sokka winked at each other as they all started walking, unable to keep the smile off of her face. She always thought it was amazing — they went through insane things every day, but at the end of it all she was always able to smile because of them. And as her gaze drifted towards the city in the distance, she hoped it would hold true.
She had no idea what Ba Sing Se had in store for her.

the fact is • jeon jeongguk
plot – you're a waitress that gets stuck serving jeon jeongguk, who can't make his mind up on what to eat.
words – 6.4K
"Indecisive snot, aren't you?"
The words are out before you could stop them. Your natural instinct is to take it back and apologize, but this idiot has pushed you over the edge. He has changed his order six times and that was after adding sides and removing this or that. The customer - the arrogant brat of a chaebol, you thought to yourself - looking at his menu snapped his gaze to you, eyes widening in surprise, disbelief and was that intrigue? Nope. Probably just a trick of the light.
"Excuse me?" He says, eyebrows still raised to high heaven.
You weigh your options silently for a few moments. You could try and kiss his ass and loose your job. Or you could finish what you started and loose your job. Because there was no question, you were loosing your job. Speaking to a customer like that, in a restaurant as high end as this? The ultimate no-no.
The choice was a no brainer.
You give him a flat look, "Are you deaf?"
A surprised scoff leaves him and for a moment he stares at you, and then a smirk pulls at the corners of his mouth. "Do you not know who I am?"
"Of course I know who you are, Jeon Jeongguk, I don't live under a rock." You roll your eyes at him.
"Huh." He frowns at you.
You frown back, "What?"
"I've never met someone so . . . outspoken before. Normally people are all compliments and well wishes." Jeongguk doesn't say how delightfully refreshing it is. Like a spring breeze, spreading through his veins and breathing colour into his monotonous life. This is the most excitement he's had since he went parachuting eight months ago. That is a sad thought, but unfortunately a true one.
"Yeah, well," You shrug, tapping your pen against your notebook. "Kissing ass and lying are two things that didn't make it onto my list of qualities."
"Speaking your mind, obviously did." He notes, still smirking.
"Excellent observational skills there, Sherlock." You deadpan.
Jeongguk laughs and you don't like the way it makes warmth simmer in your belly. He looks up at you with dark eyes and you privately think for all that the media gets wrong, they have one thing right. Jeon Jeongguk is ridiculously attractive. "What's your name?"
"Are you blind or illiterate?" You raise a brow down at him. He looks caught off guard for a moment.
"Um...neither?" It comes out unsure, hesitant.
"Then what exactly is stopping you from reading my name badge?" You ask, tapping the badge on your chest with your pen. You were already losing your job, so you might as well make the best of it.
He looks embarrassed for a second, eyes dropping to the table, cheeks dusting the faintest shade of pink.
You raise a brow, "So, are you going to order or are you going to complain to my manager and get me fired?"
"Fired for what?" He asks.
You want to snap at him, but the genuine confusion in his eyes made you hold your tongue. For once. In a 'duh' tone, you tell him. "Speaking my mind."
"Ah. Right." Realisation lights up in his eyes. "I could have you fired for speaking to me like that." He says, like the thought never occurred to him.
"I'll go get my manager then." You say and turn on your heel, not at all surprised.
Jeongguk's mind goes into an epic panic as you turn your back on him and he blurts a quick, "Wait."
"What?" You ask, turning back to him with an uninterested look.
"I said that I could. Not that I would." He tells you and it makes your speechless for about five seconds.
Then you squint at him with a slight glare, "What do you want?"
"Excuse me?"
"You obviously want something in exchange for keeping quiet. What is it?" You speak matter-of-factly. After a moment you add, "Just know, if it's something sexual or in that direction, I'd rather loose my job."
Jeongguk gapes at you, looking stunned. "I don't know whether to be insulted by the insinuation that I need to blackmail someone into sleeping with me or that you'd rather loose your job than sleeping with me."
"So sorry for offending your delicate sensibilities." You drawled sarcastically. "You still haven't told me what you want."
"Well, I like coming here often and when I do and you're my server, I'd like you to always speak your mind around me." He said, with the smallest of shrugs, looking down at the silverware on the table instead of at you.
Confusion sweeps through you, his request catching you off guard. "Really? That's it?"
"Yes." He nods stiffly.
"I don't understand." You admit.
"You don't have to. You asked me what I want, this is it." He looks at you again, eyes still dark and piercing and you can't understand what he's thinking.
"Fine, okay, yeah, I can do that." You nods eventually, noticing how his shoulders untense just a bit. You look at him, curious and full of questions, but cautious enough to not actually ask. "Are you gonna order now?"
"Why don't you surprise me? I can't decide what I want to eat." He says, handing you the menu.
"I'm shocked." You deadpan with a faux smile, before looking at him seriously. "Are you allergic to anything?"
"No." He shakes his head, lacing his fingers together and resting his hands on the table.
Your mind races for a few moments before settling on a dish. You nod at Jeongguk. "Okay, I'll be back with your food in a while then."
***
Three weeks later, you haven't served Jeongguk again. It's not that he hasn't been in, oh no, he has. You've seen him, caught him staring and then looking away quickly. He just hasn't sat at one of your tables again. Each week, the tables get rotated and there is four rotations, so you'll only be on Jeongguk's usual table next week.
You walked into the kitchen, just coming off your lunch break when Lee stops you and says, "Table 12 for you."
You look at Jae, who was on table 12 this week and got a hostile glare. You ignore her and look at Lee with confusion, "But I'm not on table 12 today."
"You were requested and customers here get what they want." Lee shrugs, giving you a 'it is what it is' look.
"By who?" You ask, having some idea of the answer. There is only one customer you know that would request you. You are always polite to the other customers but with an air of detachment, that keeps them from prying and you from getting into trouble. Until three weeks ago, that is.
"Jeon Jeongguk." Lee says, confirming your suspicions.
"Motherfucker." You swear.
Jae looks down her nose from you, "Don't he used to it. It won't last. He'll get bored of you soon enough."
"I hope so." You huff, as Jae walks away with a less than pleased expression.
"What?" Lee asks, her shock obvious.
"You heard me."
Lee tilts her head at you in disbelief and curiousity, "So, you're not trying to get into his pants?"
"Uh, no." You frown at her. Sure, he's hot but you know your place. You also need money than you need to get laid. "Why?"
"Most girls try when they work here, but everytime they try something, Mr. Jeon complains and they get fired." Lee explains.
Something suddenly made sense to you, "Is that what Jae's trying to do?"
"No one will say it to her face, but yeah, it is." Lee nods, shrugging a little. "She's jealous that he requested you, when you've worked here just over a month, served him once, and she's worked here for almost two years and he hasn't blinked in her direction."
"Huh," You frown, lost in your thoughts. "I wonder why he didn't get me fired then."
"Why? What did you say to him?" Lee eyes you curiously.
"Called him an indecisive snot." You smirk gleefully, happy that you got away with talking to him like you want and not getting fired because of it.
"Right." Lee says in a tone that made it clear she doesn't believe you.
"I did." You insist.
Lee waves you off, and you exit the kitchen, walking into the dining room, heading over to Jeongguk's regular table.
You look at him as he comes into your line of direct sight. His one leg was shaking, eyes shifting around the room, fingers tapping the table restlessly. When he spots you walking over to him, he stills completely. A smile - a cute one, you admit to yourself and no one else - spreads on his lips as he breathes your name, "Y/N."
You give him a look, "Did you miss me or something?"
"What? No." Jeongguk scoffs quickly. "I was bored. And you cure my boredom."
You raise your eyebrows at him, head going forward a little, "I cure your boredom?" You repeat, slowly. Maybe he's kidding.
But Jeongguk just nods at you as if it makes all the sense in the world, "Yeah. It's like live entertainment while I eat."
You scowl at him, "I'm not a circus clown."
"That's not what I meant!" He exclaims, voice a little too loud, causing heads to swivel in your direction. He takes a breath and speaks again, softer this time. "I just meant that it's nice. Or it was nice, the one time I actually got to talk to you."
"So, you did miss me." You tease good naturedly. Jeongguk doesn't answer, just stares resolutely down at the table. You sigh, feeling fond instead of annoyed. You hide a smile as you ask, "What will it be today?"
Jeongguk looks at you again, hesitantly at first, then fully when he sees your expectant gaze, "Surprise me."
Now you were surprised, "Again?"
"I liked what you ordered last time." He does that small shrug again. Actually, it's less of a shrug, and more a slight lift of the shoulders. You notice that he has broad shoulders, and the suit he's wearing only makes them look better. You push those thoughts away, focusing on the conversation.
"And if you don't like it this time?" You challenge.
"I did say surprise me, and surprises can be positive or negative." Jeongguk decides not to tell her that this is his favorite restaurant and he knows the menu by heart. He knows and likes every dish, so there was no way he wouldn't like something she serves him. And he's curious as to what she'll decide this time.
You snort, laughing lightly, "You know, you're not as bad as I thought you were."
Jeongguk looks mildly offended, "I'll have you know, I'm a catch."
"I'm sure." You nod, hiding a grin.
"I am." He insists and you had to admit, he is attractive.
"Yes, right up until the moment you open your mouth." You say honestly, writing down one of the dishes on the menu.
"Rude." He pouts a little and you suppress the urge to giggle, of all things.
"Maybe," You concede. "But it's the truth." You picked up his menu, turning on your heel to go to the kitchen.
"So, how do I . . . improve?" Jeongguk asks when you come back with his food, continuing with the conversation where you left off.
"Do I look like a life coach to you?" You set down the food. "Enjoy."
"Thanks." Jeongguk grins at her. "And, no, but if I went to one they'd tell me what they think I want to hear, not what I need to hear."
You stare at him for a few seconds and he looks back unflinchingly. "Well," You press your lips together. "I guess you should start with why you want to change."
That makes Jeongguk falter. He can't very well say, 'so I can impress you, since my money doesn't seem too' and he thinks for a bit. "I have come to realise that maybe I treat people unfairly based on how much money they have. I would like to change that."
Your eyebrows goes up, "That's surprisingly deep, coming from you."
"I'm not swallow." He defends himself.
You nod complacently, "Right, well, the answer is easy but actually doing it, will all depend on you."
"What do I do?"
"Just, think before you say something. Ask yourself, can my words hurt this person?"
"And if they deserve it?" Jeongguk wonders.
"The right answer would be to still be considerate, because two wrongs don't make a right, but I hate being a hypocrite, so go for it, if they deserve it. I mean, it's not like I held back when you annoyed me." You gave a shrug. "I should go. We're not allowed to loiter at the tables."
Jeongguk wants to ask her to sit with him and keep him company some more, but he knows he would be setting himself up for rejection. Instead, he just looks at her with a half smile. "Just when I think I have you all figured out, you do or say something that proves me wrong."
"My mom always used to say, you can spend a lifetime with someone and still learn something new about them every day. People evolve everyday and you'll never be who you are right now, tomorrow again."
"She sounds like a wise woman." Jeongguk remarks.
You smile, nostalgia making your heart warm, "Yeah, she was."
"I'm sorry." Jeongguk says, catching onto the past tense. A lump forms in your throat out of nowhere.
"Thank you." You swallowed thickly, clearing your throat. You gave him a shaky smile, hoping he wouldn't notice. "See, you're doing better already."
Jeongguk did notice but decided not to call her out on it. He just smiled up at her softly, watching after her figure when she walks away.
***
"You know, if I didn't know that you come here everyday, I'd say you that you are stalking me." You teased Jeongguk when you go to take his order for the fifth time in a row. You've had a day off, inbetween, but when you showed up for your next shift, Jeongguk was there and everytime he's requested you. By now, whoever was on rotation for his table, just lets you know whenever he shows up.
"And how do you know that?" Jeongguk raises a curious eyebrow at you.
"I complained to Lee about you and she told me." You explain to him, mentally running over the menu in your head. Jeongguk told you on the third day to just order for him everytime. So, when you walk to his table under the guise of taking his order, the two of you just talk.
"Lee?" He inquires.
"She's my friend and another server here."
"Ah." Jeongguk nods in realisation. "Can I ask you a personal question?"
"You can ask, but that doesn't guarantee I'll answer." You say, giving him a cheeky smile.
She has a beautiful smile, Jeongguk thinks to himself. He shakes himself out of his thoughts and looks her in the eyes, "Do you have a boyfriend?"
You frown down at him, finding the question odd. He's never asked anything too personal. Just normal things, what you're studying, what you do when you're not working. Sometimes you'll tell him a story of something dumb you did as a kid, but he'll never outright ask. "No."
A thought suddenly occurs to Jeongguk and he doesn't really want to ask because that'll destroy every hope he has but he needs to know. He quirks a brow at her, "Girlfriend?"
You snort at the question, "No, I'm straight. My cousin swings both ways though. Nearly gave his mom a stroke when he came out at our annual Christmas family dinner two years ago."
"Oh." Jeongguk wants to sag in relief, wants to let out a thankful cheer, but settles for just a small smile and letting out a breath of relief.
"Why are you asking?"
He does that little shrug that isn't really a shrug thing. "I was just wondering. You never really talk about one, or even someone you're interested in."
"Okay, if there was someone, why would I tell you?" You are teasing, but he doesn't know as you look at him blankly.
"I was just curious." Jeongguk huffs defensively.
"Yeah, yeah, settle down." You snicker. After a moment you say, "I guess I don't talk about it because there hasn't been anyone to talk about."
"Really?" Jeongguk beams up at you hopefully, eyes glittering.
"Really." You roll your eyes, but there was a slight warmth in your cheeks that wasn't there before.
***
Seven months and many short conversations later – in which you learnt many things about Jeongguk and vica versa – you walk up to his table with a smile, genuinely excited to see your sort of friend. The smile fades from your face when you lay eyes on him – his whole body was tense, you could tell even from a distance, he was glaring out the window, clenched fists laying on the table. Something wasn't right. You quicken your pace, concern swirling in your belly. You stop at his table, feeling your heartbeat quicken. "What's wrong?"
"None of your fucking business." He snaps at you, words so venomous it makes you take a step back in shock, but mostly hurt.
Jeongguk regrets the words the moment they're out because he didn't mean them. He doesn't want to fight or argue. He came to see her to feel better. Now he snapped at her. He waits, for whatever tongue lashing she is about to give him. He'd deserve it and he'll take it. But she says nothing. Somehow her silence was much worse than any insult she can hurl at him. Her face closes off, he watches it happen as her fingers tighten around the pen and notepad she uses to take orders, and panic sparks beneath his skin, overriding all the anger he feels.
No. His mind rebels against the thought immediately.
"What can I get for you today, Sir?" Her voice is perfectly polite as she asks the question, like it was the first time he met her. Until he made her snap after changing his order for a sixth time.
No, no, no, no, no! Not this. Anything but this. His heartbeat quickens.
Jeongguk was quickly turning frantic, "Y/N, please, I-"
"We have a lovely special today." She goes on as if he didn't speak, eyes void of the usual fire when she'd argue with him or the gentle warmth when she sometimes smiled at him and called him an idiot. It was the only times he ever liked being called an idiot.
He listens to her droning on about he specials, explaining them. Jeongguk's heart drops all the way down to his feet. It feels like someone pulled a rug from beneath his feet, and he is thrown off balance from the how utterly wrong it feels, how much it bothers him, hurts him, that she is talking to him like he is just another random customer. Like she hasn't told him how she got stuck in a tree, climbing after the neighbors cat. Playing with their cat because her parents never allowed pets.
A cold feeling of dread washes over him because Jeongguk has no idea to fix whatever he just fucked up.
***
You very almost cry when Jeongguk snaps at you, feeling irrationally hurt by his words. You shove it all down as you pull up your walls and shut him out to protect yourself. You serve him as quickly as possible, walking away without a friendly word.
"Trouble in paradise?" Jae smirks at you when you come back from serving Jeongguk.
You glare at her, not in the mood for dealing with her jealousy today. "No, just looking at your face is enough to put anyone in a bad mood."
Jae's eyes widened, fury spreading on her face. "You bitch!" She yells, raising a hand to slap you.
You smirk, catching her wrist easily. "Careful, just now you break a nail."
You let her go, walking away. You wait until you're in the bathroom, safely away from prying eyes in a locked stall, before letting you face crumple, only letting one tear escape before getting yourself under control.
You finish your shift, completely exhausted by the end of it – emotionally and physically. The last thing you have the energy for, is Jeongguk, so of course he's waiting for you at the personnel entrance and exit when you step outside. Intent on ignoring him, you pretend that you don't see him and you start walking in the direction of the train station.
Jeongguk follows you, apparently not easily deterred. "Will you just talk to me please?"
"What would you like me to say, Sir?" You ask in your most professional voice, looking ahead and not glancing at him.
"I'd like you to talk to me and stop treating me like I'm a customer." He says, sounding frustrated and desperate.
"You are a customer, Sir." You answer, still not looking at him.
"For fuck sakes, will you stop with the 'sir' already and talk to me like you used to?" Jeongguk all but explodes, stepping infront of you, and looking down at you for a change. It's startling, for a moment. You always look down at him when he sits at the table and it never occured to you that he's taller than you. He sets his hands on your shoulders (they're big and warm and you feel surprisingly safe, even when he squeezes slightly), frantic and desperate eyes looking into yours. "You don't even have to talk, you can yell or scream or shout for all I care, just please stop."
"You want me to talk? Fine." You glare up at him, shrugging out of his hold and taking a step back. He's way to close for comfort. "Look, I get I'm not exactly from the same side of town as you are, but that doesn't mean I'm incapable of empathy. I'd bet that I have more empathy than most people you know. So, when someone I see as a kind of friend, snaps at me when I ask them what's wrong out of concern, when they could have said they don't want to talk about it, it hurts." You rant, a little out of breath. "Do you understand that? You hurt me."
"I'm sorry. Fuck, I am so sorry, you have no idea. I shouldn't have snapped at you and I regretted it the moment I did it. I was angry, and I know it isn't an excuse but it's the truth."
"Sorry isn't going to fix it," You say, voice edging on being too sharp. Your heart twists when his face falls. You soften a bit. "But it is a step in the right direction."
Jeongguk perks up, "What's another?"
"For starters, next time you don't want to talk about me, tell me instead of snapping at me." You give him a pointed glare, crossing your arms over your chest.
Jeongguk gives you an apologetic look, "Again, I'm sorry. I honestly didn't mean to snap at you. I came to talk to you, hoping I'd calm down a bit. I had an ugly fight some dumbass that tried to sell low quality material to us and I took it out of you."
You are reminded of the fact that he is the heir to his father's multi-billion won international conglomerate and for some reason, it makes you sad. You smile at him, ignoring the sadness. "Well, you're forgiven but I'm not forgotting."
"I wouldn't dream of it." He grins cheekily. He paused for a moment, then smirks at you. "So, we're friends now?"
You groan, "I should have known that would come back to bit me I'm the ass."
***
A large bouquet of pink tulips is delivered to you the next morning. Inside is a card that reads:
Thank you for never giving up on me. -JJK
Lee whistles loudly when she sees them and your cheek burn. "Someone must really like you."
"It's from a friend." You say, ignoring the fluttering in your belly.
"My point still stands. Those are out of season, you know." She remarks.
You nod, "I know. They're my favourite."
You finish your shift with a smile on your face. Until your boss calls you into his office.
"Yes, Sir?" You ask, still smiling and the bouquet of flowers in your one hand, backpack up on your shoulders and ready to go home.
"Y/N. I'll get right to the point. There's been a complaint that you've been too friendly with one of our customers." He says bluntly.
You almost drop your flowers in shock, "What?"
"I'm sorry to do this, Y/N, but it is a direct violation of the contract you signed when you started here. Professionalism is our top priority. I have no choice but to fire you." He says, and he does look sorry as he holds out an envelope to you. "This is the week's wages. Again, I'm sorry. You are a good worker."
"You're firing me because of something someone accused me off?" You ask, indignant and a little angry. "You're not even going to ask me if I did it? And if I did it, why I didn't stop?"
"The accusation came from a very trustworthy customer that was concerned that our reputation might be damaged." Your manager says. "If it gets to the owner and he finds out I did nothing, I could loose my job."
You scoff, taking the envelope. If you didn't need the money, you'd have thrown it back in his face. "So, it's okay for me to loose mine?"
"I'm sorry."
"So am I." You say before turning around and leaving.
***
The first day she's not there, Jeongguk brushes it off, thinking she has the day off and forgot to tell him. The second day, he starts to worry, just a little. The third day, he almost thinks himself into a mental breakdown. The fourth day, he demands to see the manager.
"Mr. Jeon." The manager greets with a smile that was clearly fake. Jeongguk thought back to Y/N, who never smiled much but when she did, it was honest and pure and breathtaking. He misses it and would do whatever it takes to get it back.
"Where is Y/N?" He demands, voice and gaze equally cold and intimidating. It's a side of him that she broke through within minutes, digging up the real Jeongguk and pulling him to the surface. The past months, he's been able to breathe again, live instead of just existing, waiting for the next person that wants his money. But that cold and calculating side of him is still there.
The manager pales and Jeongguk's worry increases. Did something happen to her? The manager shifts on his feet but still doesn't answer. "If you don't answer me within the next five seconds, I will call the owner and ask him to answer me."
"S-she was fired." The man stutters out.
Jeongguk feels his stomach drop. She never outright said it but he knows she depends heavily on the income from this job. It worries him, because he has this urge to take care of her. He wants to give her as much money as she needs, for her to live comfortably, but he knows she wouldn't take it. He glares at the manager, "Why?"
"Someone filed a complaint against her. She was getting to friendly with y-you." The manager says, looking a little terrified.
Jeongguk clenches his jaw, "And instead of asking me if I have a problem with it, you fired her?"
"Her contract says-"
Jeongguk stands up, towering over the man in height and size. "I don't give a shit what her contract says. How many times have I filed a complaint when the servers made me inappropriate offers and crude suggestions? I never once complained about her."
Jeongguk doesn't give the manager anymore time to do anything other than letting out a squeak before turning around and leaving the restaurant.
***
Five days after you were fired, you started too feel it. The absence of Jeongguk's presence. At first, you didn't notice it. To wrapped up in finding another job, worried about money and going to classes to think about it. But today is Sunday and the diner you found a temporary job at two days ago, is closed on Sundays. It's crappy pay and not alot of hours either but it was something and it'll help until you could get something else.
You lay on your bed, listening to your mom vacuuming the living room. University housing was expensive and you'd rather live at home and save the money than having even more debt. You laze the day away, knowing that none of the projects you have, is due that Monday. Your thoughts drift back to Jeongguk, like it always does. You honestly didn't think you'd end up missing him this much.
You like him, so fucking much. You figured it out a long time ago. You also know that you come from two different worlds. You are fine with that, you accepted it and you were content to be his friend.
Now he's completely gone from your life. Ripped out of it without warning.
You go to your classes the next day. In your last one, you doodle absentmindedly on the corner of your notebook, only half listening to the Professor. When the class is over, you look at what you drew and then groan out loud. Jeongguk's initials. Of fucking course. You scoff to yourself, leaving the class and then the building. You want to go home and sulk in privacy.
Outside, the sun was shining and you stood still for a moment, soaking in the warmth.
"Y/N!" A voice yelled your name and your head whips in the direction because you know that voice. You look, eyes searching desperately because you are so sure it was his voice. You're not hallucinating and- and there he is, running over to you.
"Jeongguk? What are you doing here?" You ask when he stops infront of you, completely bewildered.
He looks panicked and frantic. Like that day he snapped at you. He grips your shoulders, the hold almost painful. "You weren't there. I went to the restaurant and you weren't there and the manager told me you were fired and-"
"Jeongguk, stop. Breathe." You say, reaching up to hold onto his wrists, lightly rubbing your thumbs over the inside of his wrists. You wait until his grip loosens, until he was holding instead of gripping. "How did you find me?"
"You told me where you go to school one day." He answers off handedly, eyes scanning over your face, almost as if memorising the little details. Guilt flashes on his face, "I'm sorry you were fired."
You laugh at his words, removing his hands from your shoulders because it was getting a little too intimate, your heartbeat speeding up. "You know, half the time I see you, you end up apologizing to me."
"Hey, it's weird for me too." Jeongguk pouts and you have this urge to rise on your tiptoes and kiss it. "I'm not used to apologizing."
"Don't worry about it, I'm not angry." You wave him off.
"Can we talk?" He pleads and you agree immediately because you missed him so much.
"Yeah, there's a park nearby."
"Scared to be seen with me?" He teases with a smirk, and for a moment it's like nothing has changed.
You snort, "Don't you know? The walls has ears and Twitter accounts."
Jeongguk laughs, loud and unrestrained, throwing his head back. You couldn't help but smile. "This way."
You guide him to the park. It wasn't very big, and not a lot of people came here either, so it was perfect to talk. You each sit down on a swing.
"What are you gonna do now?" Jeongguk asks.
You shrug, "No clue, but I'll figure something out."
A guilty look spreads on his face again, "I'm really sorry. I shouldn't have-"
You cut him off, "Shouldn't have what? Let a server talk back to you? Yeah, probably not but we both enjoyed it, so it's on you as much it is on you. More on me though, because it was my responsibility as an employee to treat you with respect."
"You did," Jeongguk says immediately, sincerely. "Even when you were at your most brutally honest moments."
You give him a slight smile. "Well, fun as it was, it seems our path has come to an end."
"Why?" Jeongguk frowns heavily at you.
"Huh?"
Jeongguk looks you in the eye, gaze piercing. "Why does it have to end?"
You snorted, thinking he was messing with you but his eyes were completely serious. You answer in a matter-of-fact tone, "Because you're you and I'm me. Besides, most of the time we argued."
"Y/N." He says your name like it is his greatest wish. He stands up from his swing, making his way infront of you and pulled you to your feet. He looks at you, eyes impossibly fond, "That wasn't arguing. It was banter. If you think that's arguing, you probably think my parents goes to war every now and again." He smiles, a little nervous. "And foe the record, I would rather argue with you for the rest of my life than ever kiss another girl again."
Your mouth drops open in shock, and you really don't know what the fuck to make of that. "I-"
He cuts you off, "And I don't want this to be over."
Silence falls between you two. You stare at him, he stares back. Until, finally, you blurt, "I don't know what to say."
Jeongguk is a little bit disappointed, but not surprised in the slightest. At least it isn't an outright rejection. "You don't have to say anything. Just answer one question."
"Okay?"
"Would you want to date me?" You choke on thin air from shock. That means that he feels the same way as you do, right? Happiness makes your blood sing. Then it sinks in and reality comes back to you. Your happiness evaporates and you swallow thickly. You open your mouth to tell him 'no', but once again Jeongguk cuts you off before you could say something. "Forget about our social status, forget about what people would say and think about me and you. Together. Really think about it. I have, and I think we could work, if you gave it a chance."
"And if it doesn't work?" You ask softly, vulnerable in a way you've never been before. Distantly you wonder how he knew what you were thinking.
"Then at least we can say we tried." He shrugs.
You look down at the ground, wanting to think without looking at him, into those mesmerizing eyes of his. He could ask you to commit murder, and chances are that you'll do it if he looks at you long enough. When did you become so completely gone for him? You think about it, but there was never a moment where you realised, this is the person I like. Maybe . . . maybe it's because you've always liked him. Right from the start, even when he was infuriating. The thought is startling, but you aren't scared by it. It's more like another piece of the puzzle between you and Jeongguk has fallen into place. But there is the problem of your different social statuses. Yeah, Jeongguk said forget about it, but for how long? If you try and this does work out, then eventually you'll have to face the reality of everything that comes with being together. Somehow that scares you more than if it doesn't work.
You look back up at him, and you know – despite all your worries and doubts – it was never really a choice because you choose Jeongguk the moment you chose to accept his offer of being honest all those months ago. "Okay."
Jeongguk looks like he's ready to argue, "I-" You watch as your answer sinks in. The stunned expression almost makes you laugh, "What?"
"Did you want me to say no?" You give him an amused look, smile curling the corners of your lips upwards.
His eyes widens and he shakes his head frantically, "No, no, no, I just wasn't expecting you to say yes to quickly."
"That makes two of us." You admit. Jeongguk is right though, better to try and either fail or succeed, or never try and forever wonder what if. You smile up at him, heart soaring happily. "You make a good case. You should have become a lawyer."
Jeongguk's eyes light up, "Just wait until you hear the case I have to make on why we should kiss."
"Tell you what, if you kiss me within the next three seconds, you don't have to make a case at all." You bargained with a grin.
Jeongguk didn't need to be told twice. He leaned close and kissed you, slow and deep, one hand slipping into your hair and the other curling around your waist, pulling you close to him. He breaks the kiss, licking his lips and your eyes are drawn to the action. You lick your own lips, liking the taste of him. His voice is deep and rough, his cheeks flushed, when he asks, "Want to go get something to drink?"
"Yeah," You nod with a goofy smile, your own cheeks also flushed, feeling like you might float away at any second. "I could go for a smoothie."
"I love smoothies." Jeongguk grins back at you, taking your hand, lacing your fingers. His other hand was still wrapped around your waist and hold you close.
An old question flashes across your mind as you run your hands up his chest, liking the strong, study feel of it, until you can lock your arms around his neck. "You know, I've been meaning to ask."
"Mmm?" Jeongguk hummed in acknowledgement, showing that he was listening.
"Why didn't you get me fired that first day?" You ask, aware that you are suppose to be getting smoothies but it could wait for a bit.
Jeongguk had been expecting this question for a while, and had come up with an answer a long time ago. He looks down at her with all he feels for her, a content smile on his lips.
"Because you were the first honest person I have met in years. Because you put me in my place without thinking twice. Because when you glared down at me after I changed my order for the sixth time, there was a fire in your eyes that woke something inside of me that I couldn't control. Not then and not now." He leaned down, rubbing his nose against hers, the gesture shy and intimate. "Because the fact is, you had me at 'indecisive snot'."
the end.
A/N: Tumblr and it's 250 box limit will be the death of me, I swear. I get it, I do. But come on! This very almost didn't fit, I had to edit and mush several chapters into one. Eventually it fit, but NEVER AGAIN! It was exhausting and time consuming. I'll rather split it again, like I did with two of my other fics. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed. This took me a while with all the editing. Purple hearts for all of you!! -Kayla.

Sweet Creature
Jean Kirstein x reader
Request by anon “(This is my first time doing this so im not too sure if this is right sorry) But for you Jean requests could you do one where the reader thinks they’re just an acquaintance to him because they think he likes Mikasa but after Marco dies he can’t sleep and comes to the reader and just falls asleep with them, on their lap or something and from then on he kinda tails them like a little puppy because he can only sleep when he’s near them? Sorry if that’s a lot haha”
A/N- this is my first aot imagine, I hope you all like it :)
Warning- angst and...fluff
———-
Was it ridiculous to be petty and jealous over something so miniscule as your crush liking someone else? Knowing that as much as you tried, he would only see you as a simple friend and nothing else; because he seemed to have eyes just for one girl?
And sure, him liking Mikasa was reasonable, she was beautiful and spectacular when it came to fighting. Who wouldn’t crush on her?
“Hey! Hey!”
But would Jean ever see you like he saw Mikasa?
“HEY!”
Suddenly someone shakes your shoulders and pulls you from your stupor. The sudden action making you jump and rip your eyes away from Jean who sat on the other side of the porch talking with Mikasa, to look over your shoulder to spot that it was Sasha, who had so suddenly and rudely startled you.
“Sasha?! What the hell?!” You exclaim whilst you grab onto your chest.
Said girl shrugs nonchalantly as she sits at your side. “You didn’t answer the first time I called out to you, I had to pull your attention somehow—” Sasha pauses to take a bite of one piece of bread in her hand, proceeding to chew quickly to swallow her food and continue talking. “I snatched two pieces of bread, want one?”
You shake your head and her eyes glow with joy.
“Good,” she interjects happily, “I was hoping you’d say that.”
You roll your eyes and glance Jean’s way one last time, this time actually meeting his gaze as he looks your way at the same time.
It was unexpected and caught you by surprise, but you don’t let yourself freeze, you feel your eyes widen and a burning heat grow on your face, but you manage to tear your gaze away and jump out of your seat with Sasha in hand to escape your awkward moment, (self made awkward moment).
So much for not making yourself so obvious—idiot.
“Careful!” Sasha exclaims, “my bread!”
——
Maybe it would’ve been easier to get eaten by a titan today. It would’ve helped you from having to experience that awkward moment with Jean.
What if he found out you liked him? What does he think?
No, he couldn’t possibly know, it was just simple eye contact...but what if you running off like an idiot gave that away?
No, no…..you’re thinking too much into this...Jean doesn’t know anything...he just sees you as a friend…
You put your blades down on your lap and exhale loudly, proceeding to shove your head in your hands and expressing a groan.
The only reason you somehow stop overthinking today's events, is when you hear your name called out by the front door. When you look up, your eyes slightly widen at the sight of Jean coming in.
“Are you okay?” He asks with a lifted brow.
You nod and put your blades back where they belong, showing him a shy smile while you watch him walk towards you.
“Couldn’t sleep either?” He probes as he sits on the empty space on the ground beside you.
“Hardly,” you shake your head. “It’s been hard to really sleep for the past five years now.”
Jean sighs. “Yeah.” He pauses slightly before continuing. “What are you doing here all alone?”
You shrug and study the empty and abandoned cabin. “Sasha, Connie and I like to come here when we have time to talk. Since I couldn’t sleep I decided to come here just to clear my mind.”
Jean hums as a response, making you turn your head to look at him, watching as he keeps his gaze focused on the lamp that sat out in front of the both of you. Since he didn’t talk back you continue and point out what you notice. “But you, it looks like you haven’t slept in days.”
“I can’t.”
“Well you should,” you add, trying to hide the fact that your cheeks were burning again at the simple sight of him and of what you intended to say to him. “I wouldn’t want you lacking on the battlefield and getting eaten because you’re exhausted.”
Jean lips tug into a smile.
A smile that makes your heart flutter and look away so he wouldn’t catch on to such an affect.
“I’ll manage,” Jean says in a cocky tone, unbeknownst to you, turning his head to look at you to continue. “Plus I have you watching my back and well,” he looks away from you and shrugs nonchalantly as he leans back. “I’m a great fighter.”
“Oh,” you scoff lightheartedly, “and how do you plan on continuing to be a great fighter if you don’t sleep?”
“Like Mikasa, out of sheer will.”
This time you chuckle and shake your head at his comment. “I don’t think Mikasa is such a great role model because I don’t think she’s actually human.”
Jean chuckles, “that’s true.” He looks at you again and this time your gazes meet. “I’ll fight like you then, recklessly and bravely.” Jean shoots you a charming smile seconds after and you can’t help but feel flustered and look somewhere else.
“Well I also sleep,” you interject as you try and surpass the flustered feeling. “That’s how I’m a great fighter too.”
Jean sighs and you feel his stare rip away from your face. He lets silence cover the both of you before he hesitantly decides to reply. “It’s hard to…”he pauses to swallow thickly. “...it’s hard to sleep after Marco died. Everytime I close my eyes to try and sleep I see him and after that it’s impossible to sleep.”
At his comment you instantly feel bad for being so insistent. You should’ve kept your mouth shut instead and just let him be, he seemed that he was having a good time and you just ruined it.
Idiot.
Regardless and knowing there was no way to actually smoothly avoid this conversation, you exhale deeply and speak your mind. “I’m sorry, I knew you guys were great friends, I’m sorry I brought it up.”
“Hey.” Jean quickly interjects, “it’s not your fault,” he assures you.
“Still,” you sigh, “I’m sorry. I can’t imagine how it might feel. If I lost Sasha, Connie, any of our friends, or you…” you feel your face and neck burn but you continue without stopping. “...like that, I wouldn’t know what to do.” You frown sadly and feel your eyes sting with threatening tears. You want to be hopeful, but talking of such a deep and hurting subject makes it hard to feel anything nice. Even if you hardly knew Marco, talking about what happened, about how it’s a possibility to experience that pain yourself, it aches your heart. It’s a concept you’d never get used to.
“Buts that’s why we’re doing this right?” Jean reassures you softly, “fighting? To stop those monsters one step at a time.”
You blink to look at him and can’t help the soft smile that tugs on your lips. “Yeah, you’re right.”
Silence again invades the room as neither of you speak after. Just let your eyes linger on one another in the silence, neither knowing what to exactly do next. You notice Jean's gaze fall further down your face and moments later blinking to meet your gaze for a few seconds before they fall further down again—You don’t comment on it, just copy what he had done, blinking down to look at his lips and begin to lean in like he was doing.
But before anything could continue or develop, you both seem to pull away.
How could two people kiss after talking about such a deep topic?
It wasn’t the right time even if you so badly wanted to.
All you could do was hope you could continue some other time and actually accomplish what you both intended to do just now.
Worrying for his well-being however, wasn’t something you had to wait to do later.
“Burt really, Jean you should try to sleep for just a bit.”
Said boy groans and nods his head. “Fine, fine, I’ll try.” He continues to look around the empty room and only scoff. “But there isn’t anywhere to sleep.”
“Your bed? In your cabin?” You suggest with your brows furrowed
“No,” he complains, “I won’t sleep there.”
“Fine, then just sleep here. You can rest your head on my lap, or my shoulder if you want.”
Jean eyes lock with your own and he part his lips to speak, but pauses momentarily, showing his sudden flustered expression before he quietly decides to continue. “Okay.” He looks away from you and stays in his same position for a moment, hesitating to move—“okay.” He repeats while he remains still another second before moving to lay his head on your lap. In that moment, staying quiet and stiff. Only daring to speak to complain once he managed to regain his ability to speak. “But you’ll see I can’t sleep.”
You roll your eyes and even if your stomach was doing flips, and your heart was madly thumping in your chest from your shared moment; you instinctively and slowly move your hand to interlace your fingers between his hair, slowly beginning to comb through it and feeling his body almost instantly ease at your touch.
Jean doesn’t comment on what you were doing, or move away because he didn’t seem to like it. In fact he stays with his head on your lap, moving one hand to rest it on your knee and gently stroke it with his thumb. Continuing not to say anything even after that.
The only sound that he managed to share was his soft snoring minutes later.
It makes you smile softly and feel your heart flutter some more.
Compared to what you experienced this morning, this felt like a dream. It was definitely something you never thought you’d do, or ever want it to stop. You enjoyed this. Not only because you’ve had a crush on this boy for years, but because it’s such a good and sweet moment. Even with all this chaos.
You never wanted this moment to stop.
——
“I told him to get lost if he didn’t like how I was,” Sasha tells Connie and you smugly, “it’s not my fault he can’t handle me being stronger than he is.”
Connie scoffs, “you said that?”
“Uh,” Sasha scratches the back of her neck and laughs nervously, “yes?”
Without looking at one another, Connie and you begin to burst out laughing, continuing to just mindlessly walk forward with no real destination. Hearing Sasha ramble and try to stop you two from continuing to tease her. But she's not successful, not until Jean’s voice calls out to you. “Y/N! wait for me.”
You stop and look over your shoulder to see said boy rushing towards you with a grin that made Connie and Sasha giggle. Albeit Sasha stops when Jean pushes her to the side to squeeze between you and her.
“Hey. Excuse you.”
Jean ignores Sasha’s comment and focuses on you. “What are you doing? We’re supposed to be stationed to wait for orders.”
You scoff, “yeah we are, but Connie, Sasha and I got bored,”
“So we're pretending to do something so we don’t die of boredom and Sasha doesn’t take all our rations.” Connie finishes for you.
You nod in agreement and express an amused huff of air, turning to look at Jean to question his decision to tag along. “What about you? Aren’t you busy?”
Jean shakes his head, “no that’s why I came to you.”
“Hey,” Sasha inputs, breaking the lingering gaze Jean and you shared. “I saw you two walk out of the abandoned cabin this morning,” her eyebrows quirks and she smirks, “what were you two doing?”
You feel a heat grow on your cheeks as well as feel yourself get flustered. You shrug and relieve her curiosity with a response she didn’t expect. “We were just talking.” You fiddle with your fingers and whisper, “and sleeping.”
“Huh?” Connie probed with a shit eating grin of his own.
You shoot him a raging side eye and kindly repeat yourself. “Talking.”
Connie scoffs and covers his mouth so he wouldn’t laugh, quickening his pace and going to Sasha to pull her back with him whilst he threw a dismissing comment over his shoulder. “We’ll catch up later, we have something to...do.” Without the need to say more they basically run away from Jean and you, finally letting out the laugh that was so hard for them to keep in before. As well as finally letting Jean solely focus on you.
“I was thinking, what if we went snuck back to the cabin tonight?”
You feel your eyebrows knit together and your lips part in the sudden surprise you felt at his suggestion—and it’s not because you didn’t want to go back, but because you didn’t think he would. It just completely catches you by surprise. You’re left stammering your words. “I-I, uhm. Do you really want to?”
Jean scratches the back of his head and nods, trying to hide the fact that he was blushing. “Yeah, last night was the first time I managed to get a good amount of sleep in such a long time. All no thanks to you.”
“Hmm,” you hum while you also smile sweetly. “Well I’m glad and I’d love to go back.”
Jean again shoots you a charming grin and you swear you could melt in the spot.
——
As night came, that second time turned into a third and a forth, the fifth night you didn’t end up going back, but he found a way to sleep near you. During the day it was the same in the matter that he hardly left your side, Jean would follow you around like a little child would follow their parent, or a dog with their owner. It was weird. Yet not annoying, just weird because you weren’t really used to it, or really him at all. You never thought you’d get this kind of attention from him, it’s sweet, but still a little weird.
Connie and Sasha definitely thought it was annoying though.
“Y/N, where’s your little dog?” Sasha asks you, making you slowly turn your head to shoot her a confused stare.
“What are you talking about?”
Connie leans in and continues for Sasha. “Your boyfriend, Jean?”
“Oh,” you mouth as your eyes widen and you choke on your own saliva. “He’s,” you cough out, “he’s not my boyfriend.”
Sasha scoffs, “yeah right, he follows you around like if he was one. It’s annoying. If you guys are doing stuff just tell us, we won’t judge.”
You raise and brow and ask, “is that so?”
“Absolutely.” Sasha shrugs nonchalantly. “The only thing we do judge is him following you around like a dog. It’s annoying,” Sasha repeats. “I’m actually surprised he’s not here now.”
“Yeah,” Connie agrees, “I like Jean and all, but I’m glad he’s not glued to you at the moment.”
“Like a horse.” Sasha adds before chuckling, causing Connie to laugh along with her, at a joke that didn’t even make sense, leaving you to tune them out and also go unaware of Jean listening in and getting the wrong idea.
And going throughout the entire day without ever approaching like he would the days before. Just like that night when you went to the cabin, he failed to go and left you waiting for him; just like the next two days and nights. He didn’t speak to you, or actually ever cross your path, he avoided you at every chance he could.
His sudden avoidance without an explanation left you confused and hurt, distant in conversations with your friends that you usually liked to share your opinion on. Your two best friends noticed of course, but you didn’t want to share much beside the simple detail that; he was probably just busy, (even if you did the same job at the same place).
You want to look for him, to get some relief on your questions, but again it seems like he’s avoiding you—It’s not until the third day just as the sun was setting, did it dawn on you what could’ve caused such a sudden cut off; Jean probably heard Connie, Sasha and you talking about him.
That or he simply didn’t want to talk to you anymore.
Hopefully it’s the latter though.
All you did know was that you needed to talk to him. So you kept trying to search for him, knowing you’d cross paths again, after all there wasn’t much he could do to completely avoid you. Even if so far he’s been good at hiding within the perimeters you were allowed to travel.
Making your search seem infinite.
All until night completely overtook the remainder of the day did that belief break and you finally saw him outside of the assigned cabin he temporarily stayed in—at first he didn’t notice you, not until minutes later when he felt your stare did he lift his head to make eye contact with you. Albeit he was quick to duck his head and start trying to walk off.
Not like it stopped you, you rushed over to him in time and pulled him back down to his seat across the table.
“Ah,” he complained, “careful.”
You scoff, “Jean? What the hell? Where have you been?”
He pulls his hand away and continues trying to avoid your gaze, answering in a quiet and grumpy voice that matches the scowl expressed on his face. “Here, where else would I be?”
You part your lips to answer, but no words come out, just the sound of your drawed in breath comes out. Something you proceed to quietly breathe out before blinking to look at your hand on the table, noticing his hand wasn't at his side, but still resting inches from yours.
You don’t point it out however, you just notice it and continue with what you’ve been waiting to say. “Then why have you been avoiding me? I waited for you like you told me and you never came. You haven’t talked to me since then either.”
Even if he seemed to be mad at you, he stayed to listen to you. He was good that way. He always listened.
“You should know why.” He mumbled, pulling your gaze once again to look at him and shoot him puzzled looks.
“If I did, I wouldn’t be asking now would I?” You retort with an added glare. “If you don’t want to talk to me, or be my friend, just tell me, Jean.”
Finally said man slides his eyes to finally meet your gaze. Expressing instant confusion at the sound of your comment and hesitating for a few seconds to reply. Just taking time to search your face with a widened, perplexed expression. Choosing not to press you to further explain yourself and instead pretending to still be upset. “Well if you don’t want to talk to me, just say so.”
You scoff, “what are you talking about?”
“I heard you,” he reveals softly, dropping his gaze once again. “Talking to Connie and Sasha. If I annoy you, just tell me and I’ll stop bothering you.”
At his words your face softens and you reach to take his hand in yours, not hesitating to assure him. “You don’t annoy me, Jean. I like having you around, I like talking to you. If it wasn’t obvious...” you pause at the feeling of your face burning and your heart thumping in your chest. You could hardly believe you were about to reveal what you’ve felt for years, and you were beginning to sway yourself not to say a word. But you needed to. It was time. “...I..like you.”
Jean's gaze instantly flies to you and you notice a blush grow on his cheeks through the light of the lamp on the table. He doesn’t speak, instead he pulls his hand away to stand up from his seat to walk off. You’re about to argue and follow after him, but he walks around the table to sit besides you. Relieving the panic you were starting to feel at his actions.
“I knew that.” He counters smugly.
You scoff and shake your head. “No you didn’t.”
“Did so.”
“Regardless,” you smile. “I don’t mind the nights we shared. I like them, they feel comforting.”
Jean lips finally tug into a wider smile before he wraps his arm around your shoulders, letting you rest your head on his shoulder so he could rest his head on top of yours.
Lastly assuring you with a comment you didn’t think you’d ever hear in a soft whisper. “I like you too.”

The Number One Rule. Chapter 20.
Summary: Y/N has always been seen as “Steve’s rambunctious sister.” However, she grew up, graduated, and moved to London to study abroad for 4 years and get her bachelor's degree. The girl that returns looks nothing like the teenager that left, but don’t worry the attitude is still there and stronger than ever. What’s to come of the two grown adults that used to push each other's buttons, but now have a lot more in common than they’ve ever realized.
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Y/N Rogers (Steve’s little sister)
Word Count: 3000+
A/N: Ok this is the last full chapter I have written. I’ve begun on 21, but it’s only about halfway done. I’m hoping to have it done by the Saturday, but no promises... Please be patient with me as I have a rather busy schedule and want to give you the best chapters! I hope you all enjoy this one:)
Chapter Twenty:
Another two weeks had passed, and today was move in day for Y/N into her new apartment.
She had got a small little flat in Midtown Manhattan, so she was right in between her mom and Steve and Bucky’s house. Having not really time to get furniture and not really having the money for it just yet, she went ahead and got a furnished apartment, so moving in was easy with only bringing in her bedding, boxes of clothes, and decorations.
The flat that she got was an open concept studio. The only walled rooms were the bathroom and a single closet at the entryway. Everything else was out in the open with no dividers.
They had given her a bed, couch, dresser, coffee table, and the dining table was an island in the middle of the kitchen looking out to the living room. She went thrifting during some free time finding a bookshelf and end table for her bed to add to the space.
Bucky and Steve had taken the weekend off to help her move in the heavy loaded things. Becca was coming later to help with some decorating to liven up the space.
“Where’s this one going?” Steve asked maneuvering through the doorway.
“They’re literally labeled, big guy,” Y/N shouted from the bathroom where she was organizing her toiletries.
“Not this one, Miss. Sass,” Steve countered.
“Just throw it by a wall somewhere then. I’ll get to it later,” she shouted back.
Bucky came in shortly after with two smaller boxes topped on each other.
“Ok, I think that’s it. At least in my car,” he noted, dropping them down in the kitchen.
“All clear in my truck,” Steve added with a huff as he brushed his hands off.
Y/N came out from the bathroom with her hands on her hips and let out a loud breath.
“Great. All that’s left is decorating and at least making my bed so I have a place to collapse once exhaustion hits me,” she smiled. “And according to the time,” she looked down at her watch, “that will be about 20 minutes.”
Bucky chuckled before moving over and wrapping an arm around her shoulder and squeezing her body into his side. Which she gladly used him as a wall to cave into.
“Yeah, 4 hours of moving things from mom’s to here was my workout for the day,” Steve laughed. “Now, I was promised dinner and a drink for my payment of heavy lifting, if I remember correctly.”
Y/N rolled her eyes at her brother who batted his long eyelashes at her waiting for her answer.
“Fine, I’ll call in for pizza. Anyone know a good spot around here?” she asked breaking away from Bucky for just a quick second to grab her phone before rushing back to hold onto him once again. The quick movement made Bucky laugh at how needy she was being for his touch.
He wasn’t complaining though. Now that Steve knew about them, the simple touches (they were being nice and not being as touchy as they’d like for Steve’s comfort. He was still getting used to it) meant all the world now they can embrace it instead of hide it.
“There’s Angelo’s and Joe’s. Both mouth watering New York Pies,” Bucky answered, as he wrapped his other arm around her holding her into his side more. She snuggled into his chest as she typed away on her phone for the menus.
“Any preference, Stevie?” she asked.
“I’m feeling Joe’s. While you order that, I’ll go to the corner store for some beers. Want anything specific?” he asked standing up rolling back his shoulders in a stretch before grabbing his keys.
“You know the answer to that,” she said, sending a raised eyebrow from behind Bucky’s arm.
“Yeah, yeah. I’ll get the Rose,” he waved off moving to the door. “Buck? Anything special.”
“I’m good with whatever.”
“ ‘kay. Be back in a minute.”
Steve walked out the door and instantly Y/N fell back onto her bed with a bounce.
“You’re really that tired?” Bucky laughed looking at her stilled self.
“I’ve been packing way before you guys got there to put everything in your cars,” she answered with her eyes closed.
“Did you sleep last night?” When he didn’t get a response and she just moved her arm over her eyes, he knew the answer. “You waited until the last minute to pack everything up, didn’t you?”
“Not everything… Just my entire bedroom…” she said, peeking an eye out with a small smile.
Bucky chuckled before falling down next to her. Both of them looked up to stare up at the high exposed ceilings.
“I did my bathroom the day before,” she noted.
“What else do you have left to do to make this feel like your home?” he asked, turning his head to her.
“Eh, I’ll go thrifting with Becca tomorrow probably and find decorations here and there. But considering this place is maybe just two of my bedrooms at mom’s house, I won’t need much,” she shrugged looking at him. “Definitely need to get a plant or two… Or five.”
Bucky shook his head with a grin before moving to envelope her again and pull her into his chest.
“I feel like everytime I’m going to come over, you’re going to have a new plant.”
“Well…”
“Am I wrong?”
“No.”
“You’re a dork,” he laughed, kissing the crown of her head.
“Hey! Plants purify your air and bring joy to my heart. It’s scientifically proven,” she pouted, pulling away enough to see his face.
“I didn’t know you were part of a science experiment,” he played on. “Would make sense for a lot of things…”
“You little-,” she shoved him away before jumping off the bed and moving to the kitchen.
“Hey, I’m kidding. I’m kidding,” he laughed slowly chasing after her. “To an extent.”
“Don’t talk to me,” she huffed, going back to her phone to order the pizza. The little pout of her bottom lip just made her all the more cute instead of intimidating though.
He rolled his eyes as he moved to stand behind her trapping her in her position by the island. His arms holding the counter top on both sides of her body.
“That won’t last long…” he whispered in her ear in just the right voice to make her shiver.
But she didn’t give in, no matter how bad she wanted to. Two can play this little game. She hit the call button and turned around looking at him.
Just as she opened her mouth to talk, making it a show and making him think she was about to say something to him, she brought her phone to her ear and answered.
“Hi, I was wanting to place a delivery order,” she said fluttering her eyelashes at Bucky before ducking under his arms and walking away. “Yes, I’m going to do a large pepperoni and a large margarita pizza.” She continued as she aimlessly walked around the flat.
Bucky shook his head watching her. Before he had the chance to do anything further… Becca came in with a loud huff.
“Good God. Y/N, you have a hot neighbor!” she shouted and the two turned to her. Bucky with furrowed eyebrows and Y/N with a look showing she was on the phone. “Oop, sorry,” she shrugged with a whisper as she walked to Bucky with a brown paper bag.
“Hot neighbor?” Bucky asked.
“Yeah, right next door. I might have to hop on that…” she winked as she started emptying the bag. Random little snacks and bags of candies, probably for their girls night they planned for later that evening.
“I thought you were dating someone,” Bucky questioned as he grabbed a bag of swedish fish. Becca quickly smacked his hand and sent a warning look.
“Keep up, Bucky. We stopped dating like a month ago,” she shook her head.
“Wait, what was his name again? Scotty? Sco-”
“Scott. And yes. We had almost completely different schedules, so it just wasn’t working. Eh, I’m not worried about it. He was a good lay, but I’ll live,” she tilted her head grabbing a bottle of wine and moving to put it up in the fridge.
“Oh, God. Please don’t tell me about guys you’re sleeping with. I don’t want to hear that,” Bucky squirmed.
“You’re a child,” she shook her head before turning to Y/N who was walking to the opposite side of the island. “Who was on the phone?”
“Joe. I was ordering some pizza,” she answered. “Sweet guy actually. But what were you talking about when you came in?”
“Oh!” she shouted excited. “You have a hot neighbor!”
“Is that so?” she raised her eyebrows before moving to the fridge to grab a bottle of water.
“Does that spark an interest in you Y/N/N?” Bucky asked, turning and looking at her with surprise.
“I’m not talking to you, remember?” she pointed.
“You just did,” he tilted his head with a sassy smirk.
Instead of answering, she stuck out her tongue and turned back to Becca. “Elaborate.”
“310D, right to the left of you,” Becca noted. “Longer blonde hair and those damn arms that look like if you wrapped a ribbon around them, it would take a single flex to pop it.”
“Catch a name?” she asked with a laugh.
“You do realize we’re dating right?” Bucky asked, crossing his arms.
“No, I didn’t catch it. I was just looking at him before he went into his apartment. I don’t think he even saw me,” Beck continued ignoring her brother.
“Interesting. You’ll have to figure it out,” she added, taking a swig of water. “Wouldn’t hurt to know the neighbors name.”
“Um, hello…”
“Oh, say less. Don’t have to tell me twice to interact with a perfect specimen of a man,” Becca laughed.
“I feel like I’m invisible,” Bucky mumbled, watching the two start to giggle about whatever telepathic thing they were talking about.
_________
Steve came back soon after with the drinks, and not even 10 minutes after him, the pizza was delivered.
They all sat around eating and talking with the limited furniture after Bucky set up the TV, along with Steve yelling at him that it was HDMI 4 not 2. That was a whole fight in itself.
Steve eventually left around six and Bucky was leaving soon after so the girls could have their first girl night in Y/N’s new apartment.
That was until Bekah let out a long groan.
“What?” Y/N asked leaning over for an M&M on the coffee table.
“One of my classmates just texted me asking about something for an essay I completely forgot I had due. My professor has it due at 8am tomorrow like the crazy person she is,” she sighed, looking at her phone before looking at the couple on the couch she was facing on the floor. “What kind of insane person doesn’t do the midnight deadline? This professor is going to be the death of me.”
“How much of it do you have done?” Bucky asked.
“That’s the thing,” she said with a wrinkle of her nose. “I completely forgot about it until this text…”
“You haven’t started?” Y/N chuckled, but you could tell she was worried for her friend.
“No…” Becca replied. “I may or may not have been putting it off and happened to forget it entirely.”
“Let me guess, it’s practically 30% of your grade for the semester?” Y/N said with a raised eyebrow.
“You know me so well…” she replied with a pathetic smile. “I’m going to have to bail on girls night tonight. Please don’t hate me.”
“I don’t hate you, Beck,” Y/N shook her head. “I get it. I just recently got out of that world, so I know how it goes.”
Bucky watched as the two interacted and laughed at his sister like the annoying big brother he was.
“Go before you fail the class. We can always reschedule,” Y/N waved off.
“You sure?”
“Positive. Now go. Every second counts,” she said, standing with Becca as they moved to the door. “Stop by the coffee shop on the way out. Espresso is your friend tonight.”
“Yes ma’am,” Becca saluted as she grabbed her things and stepped out of the apartment. “Oh, and next time I come, I’ll make sure to get hot neighbors name,” she added with a wink.
“That’s your next homework assignment.”
“Oh, that’s one I won’t be putting off.”
After a head shake to her friend, Becca rushed out of the building off to her own place. Y/N shut and locked the door behind her and walked back into the kitchen.
“Does that mean we get to have a girls night?” Bucky asked with a smirk.
“Ha Ha, very funny,” she laughed before falling onto the couch and laying her head in his lap looking straight up at him. “But yeah. I’d like some company first night here. It’s a big emptyish kind of space.”
“Don’t have to ask me twice, doll,” he smiled as he started stroking her hair gently.
“Oh, hey! I’ve been meaning to talk to you about something,” she noted, readjusting in her spot to see him better.
“Should I be worried?” he asked is a teasing manner.
“No,” she chuckled before grabbing his hand and starting her pattern tracing that he learned she loved to do. It was calming is what she had told him. “It’s about Steve.”
“What about Steve?” Bucky asked as he watched her finger tip glide across his palm in a gentle manner, sending shivers up his arm. She was able to do that everytime.
“Well, you know my host family I talked about?” He hummed as his answer. “So Peggy was the daughter of the people I was staying with. She was about 4 years older than me and kinda turned into my mentor. Badass woman if I might add.”
“I remember you talking about her. From the stories you had, she seems like she can definitely hold her own,” he laughed. “What does she have to do with Steve?”
“I’m getting there, slowly…” she said, adding a dramatic tone to the conversation. Bucky rolled his eyes playfully as he went back to playing with her hair. “Peggy and I talked about her coming here and staying a while. A week or so. Maybe later. However, that was when we were living together and just mapping out times to meet up again. Now, she’s got a job opportunity here and was wanting to come and stay for a little to scope out if she wants it and is willing to make the move to New York possibly.”
“Sounds like a fun plan,” he nodded. “But I’m still waiting on the Steve part.”
“Patience, B. Patience,” she said squeezing his hand slightly. “It has to do with Steve because I think Peggy would be a great match for him.”
“You want to set up your brother?”
“Yes. And if there is anyone in the world that I can think of that can handle his hard head as well as challenge it, it’s Margaret Elizabeth Carter.”
“You know your brother hates when we set him up on dates,” Bucky made note of. “She better be something else if you think it’s going to work out.”
“Oh, Peggy is the definition of something else,” Y/N smirked still concentrated on the lines on his hand.
“Ok, so when is she coming to town?”
“Not sure yet. She’s still waiting to hear back from the agency that she was talking with on a good date for them both. I mean she can always come visit before that, but travel isn’t cheap, so it would be smarter for her to just come when she also has business to attend to.”
“Valid point.”
“So you think it’s a good idea? You wanna join my team to play matchmaker with Stevie?” she asked with that damn grin that got him every time. He just can’t seem to say no to it.
“As much as your brother hates these kinds of things, you seem pretty set on it. So I’m trusting you know what you’re doing,” he smiled, brushing a thumb on her cheek.
“When do I not know what I’m doing?” she retorted gleefully.
“Well, there was that one time at Coney Island that you,-” he started, just in an effort to push her buttons.
“It was a rhetorical question that should not be answered. That is if you want to stay the night,” she said with an attempt of a threatening face.
“It’s cute you think you have an intimidating stare,” he replied, now pinching her cheek where his thumb was.
“I can be intimidating,” she sat up with a pout.
“Sure you can, Y/N/N,” he nodded with a smug grin. “That face exudes intimidation.”
When she actually set in her deathly stare that Bucky had seen when she was upset, he took a step back from his teasing.
“Ok, I’m kidding now. I know you can do it,” he said with a daunted face. The glower on her own features immediately dropped at getting the reaction from him she wanted and went back to her cute sweet innocent smile. “It’s kinda scary how easily you can flip that switch…”
“It’s a talent. What can I say?” she shrugged with a wink as she stood up and went to make popcorn. “So what movie are we watching tonight?”

Favoritism
Idol: Kim Minji, Kim Yoohyeon (Dreamcatcher)
Anon: - i wanna start by saying thank u for taking the time to read this and that reading ur works is such a stress reliever amidst all the deadlines i have ☺️ craving some fluff rn so can i request a scenario with poly reader, jiu and yoohyeon? jiyoo wants their s/o’s attention but s/o is busy with pie and cherry who seem to favor s/o a lot more than their own owners. (can u add sua being whiny bc pie keeps running away by going to the reader? i find it cute everytime i see a scared pie with her 😂)
A/n: this is just such a cute and funny idea that i was excited to write it. I’ve been itching for more Dreamcatcher requests so thank you for this
☕buy me a coffee☕
Your girlfriends always loved it when you were able to spend time together despite your busy schedules. With them being idols and you at your own job, it was understandable that the time you had together wasn’t exactly a lot. But whenever you were around, it made the whole thing more meaningful.
Gone were Jiu and Yoohyeon from Dreamcatcher and the only people left were your girlfriends, Minji and Yoohyeon. Whenever the three of you were together, they lived their lives in such a domestic manner even with the mention of InSomnias and having the rest of the group around every now and then.
While they loved when you were at the dorm, right now, they were sat to the side, watching with envy when your attention would not shift away from the twos pups that were happily wiggling on your lap and trying to catch your hands.
“You’re so cute! If I knew you were here, I would have brought something for you.” You coo while scratching under their chins before they decided to stand on their hind legs in an attempt to lick your face, but due to both being so small, they could barely even reach your neck.
But their attempts were just so cute, and the way they would not stop trying to lick you ended up tickling you and forcing you to fall back from your sitting position. Seeing their opportunity, the two dogs waste no time in attacking your face with kisses, drawing more giggles from your lips as you squirmed on the floor.
It would have been such an adorable sight to the two owners, but seeing as it’s been more than thirty minutes of you ignoring the pair that’s caused them to dislike their adorable little fur babies at that very moment.
“Cherry, come here!” The leader tried after another five minutes, but the white puppy refused to budge from your chest, the same with Pie when Yoohyeon tried calling for her. “Pie, Y/n is tired, see?” But she simply turned her head away when you started to pet the two.
Minji looked at you with a huff, pouting when you wouldn’t even look in their direction. “I get the feeling that you’re only with us for our dogs.” She claims, but even then you refuse to look while smiling at the two. “Well, they were the ones asking for my attention. It’s kinda hard not to give it to them.” You chuckle lightly before slowly sitting up, setting the two on your lap but keeping one hand on each of them as they finally calmed down.
“You said you were visiting us, not Pie and Cherry! And they won’t even come to us.” Yoohyeon complained with a pout of her own when she stood to try and take her pet away, but Pie had only tried to wriggle out of her arms before she was making her way back to you.
“In my defense, I had no clue they were here.” You smile before putting the two on the floor to stand up and tend to your sulking girlfriends, which caused them to finally smile at getting your attention, but the tugging of your pants had caused you to pause, looking down to find Cherry biting on it just so you would pay more attention to her.
Seeing this, Minji’s eyes narrowed before she looked around for the pup’s toy and then reaching for it. “Cherry, look! It’s your favorite toy.” She called out, and while she felt triumphant when she looked, Cherry was quick to dismiss it as she barked and attempted to have you pick her up once more.
Their antics had caused you to laugh before reaching down to pick both Cherry and Pie up, seeing as the latter was staring at you to do so. Walking over to the bed, you sat down next to Minji, Yoohyeon taking the opposite side as you set the two dogs on their respective owners’ laps.
But before they could even properly hold them, the two hopped off their laps and back on yours, earning a groan from the pair and another bout of laughter from you. “Jesus, why are they so clingy?” You ask, your voice going a pitch higher when you, once again, began to shower them with affection.
"For heaven's sake..." Minji tried to get Cherry off of you, only to have her bark back and shift away from her hands. "Yah! Kim Cherry!"
"Pie loves mommy, right? Come to mommy." Yoohyeon had attempted to lure Pie back to herself, only to have said dog turn its head to you and pressed her small body against your stomach.
Seeing as there was no chance of their pets leaving your side, Yoohyeon groaned dramatically before she was laying down on the bed. “Unnie! Our babies are stealing Y/n!” She whined in a high pitched tone as Minji pouted while you continued to play with the two said babies.
“You’re being so dramatic. They just missed me just like you did.”
“We still miss you because we only got at least five minutes until Pie and Cherry took you away.”
Lightly rolling your eyes, you then move to set the two pups on the floor and then turn to the pair who were looking at you with a pout on their faces. If it were possible, Yoohyeon would even cry with how much you refused to give them any form of attention.
“Come here. They can’t get on the bed.”
At that, your two girlfriends finally perked up before you were pulled down on the bed and into their eager arms, kisses being pressed to your cheeks before Yoohyeon rested her head against your shoulder and Minji pressed a chaste kiss to your lips, sighing in content as they were finally able to enjoy your company without a problem.
“I can’t believe you were being jealous over dogs.” You chuckled when the three of you just ended up cuddling on the bed, kisses exchanged in between and whispered compliments slipping every now and then.
Minji scoffed as she glanced to the floor where the two were, patiently waiting with their tails wagging, and then back to you. “We’re your girlfriends.”
“They’re your babies.”
“Stop ruining the moment.”
You ended up laughing at the small whine that came from the silver haired woman and kissed her forehead before doing the same to Minji, who relaxed in your hold and allowed her eyes to close.
“I’m always gonna love the both of you. Cherry and Pie are your kids, so of course I’m going to love them, too.” You tell them as Yoohyeon hums. “But you should love us more.”
“There’s no one else to love more.”
..
Later in the evening, everyone’s gathered in the living room, you and Minji in the kitchen, preparing dinner, while Gahyeon decided to help out and wanting to learn as well.
The rest of the girls were just waiting, playing with the two dogs since their attention seemed to always flit to the pair whenever one of them was brought along for the group to meet.
“Unnie, stop!” You could hear Yoohyeon’s voice amidst the chaos while continuing to stir the pot, the girls’ laughter meeting your ears after. “Be careful!” Siyeon had called out and the three of you wonder what was happening until two fluffy puppies came pawing at your legs.
Handong had to laugh as Bora ran after them. Currently, Yubin was laughing on the couch with Siyeon beside her and the main vocalist had her phone out whilst Yoohyeon had gotten up to run after the two as well.
When you look down at the two, Bora was already whining. “Why do they keep going to Y/n?” The volume of her voice seemed to frighten the pups and you smile before gently picking them up, your older girlfriend shaking her head as she went back to finishing your food while Gahyeon did her best to distance herself from you and the dogs in your arms.
“They really love Y/n. Cherry even barked at me when I tried to take her away.” Minji explained as you walked to the living room to set the pups down. Yubin reached out after calming from her laughing fit and smiled when Pie licked at her hand while Handong gently started to pet Cherry’s head.
“It would have been easy if Y/n’s surname was Kim, too. But if ever, are you going to rename them as Cherry and Pie L/n or just keep them as is?” Siyeon asked curiously.
“I’m offended that you think I’ll let Y/n completely steal my baby, unnie.” Yoohyeon piped up as she picked Pie up into her arms and rubbed her stomach. “Ohhh. Rejected.” Handong teases but you just smile and shake your head. “Even if they don’t have my name, I can still love them, anyway.”
“Y/n is such a sweet talker, no wonder Cherry and Pie prefer them over us.” Minji stated as she and Gahyeon finally came back with the food and placed them on the table. “Well, to be fair, Y/n is a really lovable person.” Gahyeon piped up, earning a smack on the arm from a cackling Bora.
“I can’t argue with that, but I still refuse to leave Y/n with Cherry and/or Pie anymore. I feel like if we do that, they’ll go home with Y/n instead.”
“Hey, I’ll take good care of them.” You defend and Yubin nods her head. “With how you take care of Jiu unnie and Yoohyeon, there’s no doubt about it.”
“No, I’d rather Y/n just takes care of us and we’ll handle the dogs.” Yoohyeon huffs and her fellow maknae seemed surprise whilst Siyeon poked her arm. “Are you being jealous? Of your own dog?”
“No.”
“Yes.”
Minji and Yoohyeon send you a glare while you winked at them. “They’ve been like this the whole day.” You explain, earning another round of laughter from the group, minus your two lovely girlfriends.
“You’re lucky we love you.”
“Love you, too.”

Us telling each other to go to sleep while simultaneously not sleeping
-
1) You can just stop writing the au if you hate it so much, or just take a hiatus. I know people like it but you shouldn't burn yourself out!
2) Have you ever heard of the Lykoi cat? Please search them up if you haven't
3) Diphylleia Grayi, is a type of flower that looks turns "invisible" when it touches water
4) Do you have a favorite spider?
5) Help I keep drawing porcelain Jekylls that I'll never post </3 /lh
6) hsjsvdjsgh I cant think of anything. Uhhh. The Wulver is a scottish creature that's a furry person with the head of a wolf and shares fish with locals. Honestly most drawings look like furries I've just noticed, why is no one drawing em with proper clothes
7) Similar questions to my last(?) ask. Do you have any thoughts on what supernatural/mythical creatures tgs characters would be if they were one? And what would your latest oc that I keep forgetting how to spell the name of be?
...The fact that that is accurate scares me-- I'm also going to save that meme for future references everytime either of us catch the other up late sdfds
1) THEORETICALLY YES... But I know that if I take a hiatus I will never finish it, and I know how guilty I would feel for not continuing it... Plus, most of my complaining is just dramatic but I'm not used to make chaptered fics and never will ever again. I guess it's just a mix between constantly having to worry about how the fic is perceived (especially since we are entering the more controversial/angsty chapters rn) combined with the deadline that makes... Me sad :'3
2) *frantic googling* OH MY GOD THEY LOOk LIKE THE DEFINITON OF A TRASH GOBLIN I WANT FIVE OF THEM IMMEDIATELY SFSDFSDF
3) oo h h m y god... It looks like ice... Are they edible? My brain is telling me to go absolutely bonkers on them. O o h h m y god
4) I had a very weird phase as a kid, who was also very afraid of spiders, where I tried to convince my parents to give me a tarantula because I saw that they were fluffy. I'm still massively afraid of spiders but otherwise I'd say redkneed birdspider (is that the english name???)
5) Bestie I know how it feels my entire sketch book is just drawings of my ocs that will never grace tumblr </3
6) Oh man. I love Wulvers. I know jack shit about them but I had planned to have Henry meet a wulver in the Irrbloos Au at some point, since they were benevolent and helpful I had planned to have a wulver lead him back and get him back to the real world at some point but I never got so far into that plotline. But honestly... All pictures of werewolves of all kinds look like furries. Did you know that they have werehyenas in africa, which is basically just reverse werewolves (i.e a hyena that turns into a human instead of the other way around)?
7) I'm going to start off by saying that Cederic definitely would be some kind of nymph-like creature like an incubus of some kind or just a straight up male nymph/siren, something very pretty and very seductive because, I don't know if anyone read his part of the updated OC masterlist post, he was originally a prostitute and very much uses that to his advantage to get what he wants. Something cat-like would also make sense, as his mother (in the actual DND campaign) is the egyptian cat goddess Bastet, but regardless, he still has his cat so it would fit no matter.
*cracks knuckles* alright here we go. Not going to go into a lot of context i'm just going to spew shit out.
Jekyll - Werewolf, really, that's no surprise but a werewolf fits so good. Having a monstrous side he tries to hide that only comes out at night? *chef's kiss*
Hyde - Imp or poltergeist.
Robert - Vampire.
Rachel - Selkie
Jasper - since he already is a werewolf, he would just be Some Dude
Frankenstein - Dwarf, or Baba Yaga.
Griffin - Ghost that does not want to be a ghost
Emma - A Huldra, maybe? A benevolent nymph? A banshee? I just love her and I wanted to add her to the list somehow.
Maijabi - a ghost who is totally chill with being dead. Maybe one of those spirits who like to fuck with humans (metaphorically speaking) by hailing cabs and then ditching them in the middle of the ride.
Lavender/Ito - those centaurs that are deer instead of horses I forgot the name sdsdfs
thats all i can come up w at the moment sdfsdf

Nothing too crazy
Tries to make it a healthy mukbang channel and talks about fitness and adventures him and his squad have had
But slowly it starts growing into a competition for himself
Like one day Gai sensei is a guest star on his channel he’s like “Lee, why don’t we have a competition and see who can eat theirs the fastest”
Then his channel morphs into eating food as fast as he can
Needs to take the biggest bites humanly possible
Probably passed out a few times from lack of airflow from all the chowing down
“How long will it take me to eat this whole bathtub of raw veggies? My previous score was two minutes and twelve seconds, today I will beat that score!”
Collabs w naruto in a ramen eating competition
They’re like YouTube rivals now
Collab at least once a month and they are both even in terms of wins:
Rock Lee won 13 times Naruto won 13 times
Will whip the vlog camera out everytime he’s out at a restaurant eating
Tries to convince Neji and TenTen to be featured in a mukbang
When they finally agree it’s chaos:
Lee is like eating upside down and he’s timing it
Tenten low key wants to win so she’s really chowing her food down and almost strangles Lee bc shes mad she can’t keep up
Neji is just there eating slowly and watching them like: smh
Sometimes he will post a vid w no dialogue and just heavy breathing and him mowing down a huge plate of food with this determined almost deranged look in his eyes
If you want any other characters, feel free to send me a little message!

↦ Summary: You thought you knew what you wanted – You were sure you knew what you wanted. You thought the be-all and end-all was a loving, domestic marriage with your fiance, Touru Kim; the love of your life, the future father of your children, and the man of your dreams, but things happen. Events begin to unfold, and the relationship falls apart. You see the true colors of your husband-to-be, and you realize that maybe he’s not what you built him up to be. With everything laid out in front of you, you knew the be-all and end-all was a loving, domestic marriage.
Just not with Touru.
✨ Masterlist ✨
The weeks that followed your late arrival home were uncomfortable to say the least. If you thought Touru was overbearing before, you clearly weren’t prepared for whatever new attitude he’d come equipped with this time.
The following morning, you woke up early enough to shower and take some extra time to get ready for work. You didn’t get much sleep, and you were still upset from the night before. Not only that, but Jin had the next few days off, so you wouldn’t have any pick-me-ups from the walking ray of sunshine himself.
Then again, it’s not his job to pick you up everytime something goes wrong.
Touru was sitting in his usual spot at the kitchen table when you emerged from the bathroom, sipping coffee and going over something on his tablet with a focused glint in his eye. You took a deep breath and smoothed your blouse out, passing him in a silent stride so you could make yourself some coffee.
“Did you sleep well last night?” “Mhm.”
You bit the inside of your cheek at his curt response. The animosity in the air was something akin to the calm before the storm. You hated the anticipation that came with waiting. You could handle the arguing and the aftermath, but this silence was almost too much for you to bear.
Nevertheless, you waited. It was all you could do. With shaky hands, you carefully cupped your mug and tilted it against your lips. Inhaling through your nose as you tried to make the best out of a bad situation until Touru finally spoke up.
“About last night…” “Yeah?”
He set his tablet down and turned around in his chair so he could see you. His stern glare already told you so much about what was to come, but still you held onto hope. Held your ground with a sturdy shield as you awaited his next words.
“I want you to start sending me updates when you’re not home.”
You furrowed your brows in a silent accusation. “Excuse me?”
“You heard me.” He mimicked your tone. You set your coffee mug down so you could grip the edge of the counter. “I always text you where I’m at; who I’m with--”
“Except for last night.” “It was one time, Touru. And I apologized for it.” “I don’t care.” He said, forcefully standing out of his seat. “I had no idea where you were at-” “You knew I was with Yuna!”
No you weren’t.
You prayed a silent plea to your guilty conscience to just please be quiet. Just this once. It took some reaffirmation on your part before you could straighten your shoulders and look him in the eye again. A weak spot in your confidence that wouldn’t go amiss by him.
“Do I know that though, (Y/n)?” He demanded in a low tone, his nostrils flared in defiance. The question was enough to catch you off-guard. A dent in your armor that forced you to back down, and he took the opportunity to keep going. “How do I know you weren’t with him, huh? How do I know you didn’t shut your phone off so you could enjoy your evening with another man?”
“Touru…” You frowned, unable to come up with the right words to reassure him. You already struggled enough trying to convince yourself that you were allowed to find balance with your relationship and Jin’s friendship, but when you stopped to consider how you might be making your fiance feel, that all came crumbling down because deep down, you knew. You knew part of him was right to be suspicious of you, and you had no defense against that.
“I. Expect. Updates.” He enunciated each word carefully. “And if I text you, I expect you to text me back. I shouldn’t have to try to call five or six times just to make sure my fiance is okay.”
You frowned and clasped your hands in front of you, looking down at your feet instead of him. “Touru, you know I can’t be using my phone when I’m on the job--”
“Then I expect phone calls during your breaks.” He hissed, walking closer to you. “You’ve been acting awfully suspicious lately. I swear, sometimes it feels like I don’t even know the woman I’m living with.” He spat with an exasperated sigh. You couldn’t say or do anything. Once again, he’d struck down your confidence; your defiance with a sharpened spear. A reminder that he has the upper hand in this relationship, and it’s going to stay that way.
“I just… I want to know that we are secure in our relationship. It’d make me feel better to hear from you.”
“Right.” You breathed. “I understand.”
You bent for him just like you’ve always done. With the hope that things would gradually get better over time. By the end of the week at the latest, you were sure everything would be fine.
But as the days turned into weeks, Touru’s protective ways only grew stronger, and your patience grew weaker. Eventually, you started having to keep your phone in your pocket as Touru’s messages came in aggressive waves with passive-aggressive undertones.
Being part-time, your schedule wasn’t always the same, and it took some time for Touru to understand that. You found yourself having to explain on several occasions how your breaks had been scheduled for you, and just because you had a break at noon today doesn’t mean it’ll be at noon tomorrow.
Somehow you’d hoped the phone calls would be comforting in a way, like maybe having the opportunity to speak to each other would ease some of the stress, but you were sorely mistaken. Oftentimes, you’d find yourself rushing to the backroom just to avoid the brunt of his interrogation. The sooner it began, the sooner it could end.
If you didn’t call him first, then he’d call you, and god forbid the phone call went through to voicemail the first time. Just a couple days ago, you’d switched breaks with Kyla. She’d been feeling unwell, and you insisted she took hers first. It’d already been a busy day, plus you were picking up some of the extra slack for the Home department, so it completely slipped your mind to tell Touru you wouldn’t be on your break for another hour. You ended up with ten missed calls and a couple of very angry voicemails, and another night of sleeping on the couch.
The calls never lasted very long. He kept you on the line long enough to ask where you were and who you were working with that day. Occasionally he’d ask if you’d seen Seokjin if you hadn’t mentioned him. As time went on, you tried to make the calls feel a bit more personable. Cutting in with just enough time to ask if he was having a good day, or if he’d eaten lunch, but his answers were always short and curt. It took a week of consistent calling before he finally started responding when you’d tell him, “I love you”. You never told him how much that hurt you. Not since all this started, and you couldn’t shake the constant reminder that it was your fault.
Some days, he’d pick you up from work. Most days, he’d let you know, but there were a few times he “surprised” you. Although the ride wouldn’t be any more comfortable than chatting over the phone. He’d keep a straight face the whole ride home, asking about your day as soon as he saw you, and then silence. You could officially add this to the list of things you felt guilty about. Making the trip into town only made his drive home that much longer as your work was out of the way for him. It probably was a chore for him to come get you, but he never complained. Still, you couldn’t tell if he was doing this to make a point or just to make himself feel better.
On top of everything else, Jin had become seemingly worried about the new habits your fiance had picked up. As much as you appreciated Jin’s concern, it was well and truly the last thing you wanted to talk about when you weren’t having to deal with it.
“You’re sure everything’s okay?” “Yes, I’m sure, Jin!” You snapped with a strained smile after he’d asked about it for the third time, “I’ve just been picking up more hours recently, and we’re kind of busy outside of work, too. Touru’s just worried about my well-being is all.”
You didn’t feel any better about lying to Jin than you did to Touru, but what else could you do? You didn’t want Jin to see the rough edges surrounding your relationship. Not because he was an outsider, but because you were scared of what he might think if he found out. You couldn’t bear the thought of him trying to sympathize with you, or even worse, trying to fix the problems like Dahyun does. What you were afraid of more than anything was letting Jin find out how Touru feels. What he thinks about a man he’s never even met. After watching it happen with so many other friends in the past, you’d convinced yourself that Touru’s less than friendly attitude would absolutely run Jin off, and you weren’t going to let it happen. You were perfectly capable of juggling your relationship with Touru and your friendship with Jin. You were determined to do it.
Enjoy it while it lasts, you reminded yourself. Because one day, you won’t have him anymore.
__
Valentine’s day, and you were working the closing shift. Not that it mattered since it’s never been a holiday you and Touru celebrated as a couple. “A corporate scam” is what he always called it. Always annoyed that people were so willing to pay the price markups for chocolate in the name of romance when you could celebrate your relationship at any other time of the year, and without all the gaudy decorations.
You always understood why he wouldn’t want to celebrate it. Doesn’t mean you didn’t want to indulge in some of the cliche sappiness that came along with the holiday itself, but you weren’t about to add onto the already growing list of reasons why you and Touru shouldn’t get along.
You sighed, making your way back to the breakroom. It’s not like it was even that big of a deal this year anyway. You worked most of the day away, not to mention your relationship had been strained for nearly a month now with little petty arguments every other night. It’d been one of the longest fights you two had ever been through, and you were beginning to worry about whether or not it was ever going to end.
At least you got to enjoy it a little bit, though. Irene and Seulgi left little chocolates in the associates lockers and surprised everyone with an additional associate discount which ran through the rest of the weekend. You took some time to browse some of the Womens clothing while you were on your shift, but you didn’t see yourself getting much shopping done in the next two days.
You’d reserved this weekend to go visit wedding venues with Touru, but due to the lasting fight, he ended up cancelling two of the showings. One because he “Didn’t have the time”, and the other purely out of spite, only further dragging out the argument especially after you found out about the outrageous cancellation fees he forked out.
The thought alone had you frowning as you turned the coupon over in your hands to read about the promotional offers. Yeah. Who were you kidding? You probably wouldn’t be in the mood or even have the time to do any shopping this weekend. Oh well, you thought as you tossed the coupon back into your locker. It’s the thought that counts.
As you began pulling your belongings out, you were surprised to find a folded piece of mini cardstock fly out of your locker, and onto the floor. You raised your eyebrows in surprise as you picked it up. It was pink with white lace trim. On the front was a cartoon style picture of a s’mores with, “I need s’more friends like you!” printed underneath in an adorable font.
You couldn’t help the stupid grin spreading across your face as you opened the card up. “Happy Valentine’s day! Thank you for always being so kind to me!” Signed Jin with a little heart next to his name. It was such a simple little gesture, but one that had your heart pounding in your chest as you continued to stare at his name at the end. What a dork, stealing your signature style.
He must’ve slipped it in after you’d clocked on…
“I see you got Jin’s annual Valentine’s day card.” Kyla giggled as she opened up her locker beside yours. “Oh, yeah! He gave one to you as well?”
“Everyone gets one. He’s snuck them in our lockers every Valentine’s Day for the last three years.” She giggled, “I don’t know. I think it’s a sweet little gesture.”
You frowned looking back down at the pink paper in your hands. Of course he did this for every associate; that’s just the kind of person he was after all. “It is a pretty sweet gesture, isn’t it.” You agreed softly in response, checking to make sure Kyla wasn’t looking before you slipped the card safely into your bag.
“Yeah, but you should’ve seen the way he went all out for Seulgi last year. He left like a legit Valentine’s Day card on her desk with a pack of her favorite mini candy bars and bought her coffee. Like he did a lot.” She giggled.
“Wait, what?” Her sudden confession left you feeling a little dumbfounded. You almost knocked your head into the door of her locker when you turned to look at her. “Oh, he hasn’t told you?” She sounded equally as surprised as you did, giving you a look as if to say, “Oopsie!”
You just shook your head. “Ah, well you didn’t hear it from me, but Jin has the biggest crush on Seulgi.” She leaned in close as she explained. As if you two weren’t the only ones in the breakroom. “Well, he used to like her anyway. And I’m pretty sure they were fooling around for a period of time, but…” She shrugged. “All I know is something happened between those two. They would flirt when they thought no one was looking, and Jin would occasionally spend his lunch with her. Then one day, it all just stopped.”
Kyla continued to struggle with her backpack in her locker as if everything she was saying was completely normal. Almost like she didn’t just tell you one of Jin’s biggest secrets. You tried to conjure up a response, but you couldn’t. Your head felt like it was spinning, and your breathing had turned shallow. Almost like there was a rock sitting on your lungs “I… Did either of them ever talk about it?”
Kyla shook her head no. “Well, kinda. Not face to face with any of us. I only know what I know because I heard them talking once when I was coming out of the bathroom. Seulgi said something about “You’re coming back to mine, right?” and Jin asked if her boyfriend would be there this time.”
“Wait, did he ruin her relationship?” “I don’t think so.” Kyla responded, giving you a hard look. “No, anyway I brought it up to him, and he begged me to keep it hush. He just said him and Seulgi were doing each other a favor.” She rolled her eyes. “I told him I’m not as innocent as I look; he can just tell me they’re fucking, and he was surprised, but he just kinda brushed it off. Told me he felt like it was more than that.”
You nodded and looked away, wondering how in the hell you were supposed to process all of this. You really wanted to ask Jin all about it, maybe even force him to explain it to you because Kyla’s retelling certainly didn’t leave you feeling confident. Maybe you gave him more credit than he was worth.
Playboy Seokjin, huh?
That doesn’t sound like your Jin.
“Anyway,” Kyla sighed, hauling her backpack over her shoulder before slamming her locker door shut. “I’m gonna head out. I’ve got a big project due Monday. Enjoy your weekend, okay?”
You smiled and nodded. “You too! And good luck!”
The world seemed to right itself once you were alone in the breakroom. The air felt normal, and you could breathe. Maybe focus on getting home.
But it wasn’t right. It wasn’t normal. First of all, how could Kyla drop an absolute bombshell of a rumor like Jin’s affair on your shoulders? Second of all, Jin being a homewrecker? Jin being someone who would screw around with his higher-ups? That didn’t sound like him at all.
Then again, the guy you know could very well just be a persona, and very thought of it left you with a heavy feeling both in your heart and the pit of your stomach. It left you questioning every interaction, every compliment, everything you’ve had with Jin. That’s not to say you’ve had very much with him, but it was enough. His words, although soft, always hit you hard, and they stayed with you.
He almost kissed you…
What if he wasn’t really playing with you? What if he was just trying to get you into bed with him?
You still probably would have. Oh god, you would have, but it would’ve hurt so bad the next morning to find out he wasn’t a committed man. It was a bittersweet realization that left your heart yearning for something it couldn’t have. Even if you weren’t with Touru; even if you’d allow yourself to explore these feelings, you don’t actually believe Jin would return them.
You smiled sadly and closed your locker. It’s probably a good thing to know what you know now. It hurts like hell, but hopefully it’ll be enough for you to get over him.
__
It was early Saturday morning. You and Touru were on the way to some ritzy little country town where you’d be getting the grand tour of…
Well.
You weren’t really sure what the place was called. You didn’t really care either. Of all the venue tours to get cancelled, you were sure this one would top the list. It was some exclusive golf club retreat with poolside service and horseback riding. Very fancy. Very opposite of what you’d ever dreamed of.
They only had one slot left today at nine O’clock in the morning. Normally, this wouldn’t be an issue, but it was nearly a two hour drive through the countryside on a two lane highway, and after the hellish month you’d been subjected to, you really weren’t looking forward to this extended downtime with Touru. If you were being honest with yourself, all you wanted to do was crawl back into bed and sleep your day away.
At least you had tomorrow to look forward to -- A long awaited brunch with Chae and Dahyun. They recently went on a trip to one of the Disney parks, and they only just got home earlier that morning. Dahyun sounded overjoyed when you called her the other day, insisting she couldn’t tell the story over the phone, and it had to be in person. As happy as you were to see your best friends, you couldn’t find it in yourself to express any of that joy for the time being.
“This is nice, isn’t it?” Touru sighed, resting one arm on the driver side door while he controlled the steering wheel with the other. “We haven’t had time like this together in awhile. I’ve actually been looking forward to this drive, and seeing this venue.”
You hummed in response. Your hands lay crossed in your lap as the scenery outside your window was passing you in a dull blur. “This place is rumored to be one of the hottest wedding venues in the area! It’s really popular, and they treat the newlyweds like royalty.”
“That’s really nice.” You murmured, turning briefly to give him a small smile. “Hopefully it’ll live up to our standards then.” The two of you fell silent once again with only the soft sound of smooth jazz to fill the silence.
Your bag felt like a dumbbell lying in your lap. Knowing the Valentine’s day card still lay in there, or the way Jin’s comforting voice was just a phone call away.
He’s at work right now. It’s not even like he’d be able to talk to you.
You frowned to yourself. If he’s not busy with work, then he’s probably busy with Seulgi.
“You know I was thinking, after the tour is over, we could go to this little seafood buffet,” He chirped, “It’s right across the street, and their food is so good. I’ve been there plenty of times. You’ll love it!” He went on and on, looking over at you to see your reaction, but you looked as sad as ever. Touru forced out another sigh, one much heavier than the last after seeing you weren’t nearly as enthusiastic about today as he was, much to his disappointment.
“I’d really appreciate it if you could drop the attitude before we get to the venue.” You frowned at him. “I don’t think I have an attitude.” You replied. “I’m just tired, Touru. I worked over thirty hours this week, then I closed last night, and I had to wake up early this morning.” You explained softly, “Surely you know how I feel right now?”
He didn’t respond for a moment, taking a moment to switch lanes before focusing back on the highway in front of him. “Well,” He breathed. “You already know where I stand. You can quit whenever you’re ready.” He replied bitterly. “You’re only hurting yourself at this point anyway.”
You had no choice but to turn away as your face contorted in anger. You couldn’t bear to speak or even look at him right now.
__
The venue tour lasted much longer than it needed to. The venue in question, which you learned was Silver Soul Country Club upon stepping into the vicinity, was every rich man’s wet dream. Including your rich man.
There was no denying the beauty of it all. It was like a shared mansion with the patrons walking around dressed to the hilt in fancy clothes. Even the staff wore beautiful uniforms that looked like they were probably hand washed and ironed every morning. The tour guide was incredibly kind, explaining to you and Touru not only what you should expect the day of your wedding, but the discounts you’d receive if you chose to join their club before or the day of your wedding.
Despite how chilly it was, you witnessed some of the club members on the backs of horses, enjoying their day. A couple of men were out on the golf course who Touru was happily chatting up, laughing and discussing bits of their personal lives. Touru even introduced you to them as “My future wife”.
You didn’t enjoy it.
It was a little after one O’clock once you and Touru finally sat down to eat at the buffet. Sat across from Touru, you took a moment to check your phone while you ate, leaving Jin’s messages for last.
Jin: [Image] Augh! We’re so busy today!! I wish u were here to help me )): Jin: You had that venue showing today, right? Lmk what it was like!! Eventually I’m gonna get married one day, and I trust you to make only the best wedding decisions! ^^ Jin: Fucking christ. I’m working w/ Mark again today. Jin: It wouldn’t be such a big fucking deal if he didn’t have to stop me everytime I walked past him to tell me about the semester he spent in france. Jin: Like. Dude. I don’t give a shit. Half the time I don’t even believe the shit he’s saying, it just makes him sound pretentious. Jin: [Image] Be honest: Would I look good in this shirt?
You smiled, using one thumb to respond quickly.
You: Would’ve rather worked today. We just spent almost three hours watching rich people have fun //: You: -10000/10 Do Not Recommend You: Go easy on Mark! I know he drives u nuts, but he’s still a kid )): Probably just wants to impress you. Ur basically like the superstar of that place after all! You: Yes, of course you’d look good in that shirt! You look great in pink! ^^ You: Hope ur day is going better now!! What time do u get off?
With your phone now lying face down on the table, you wanted to try eating at least a little bit. You ended up skipping breakfast, and the tour left you hungry, but you didn’t feel well. You were a little too worried about what Kyla told you last night. Your mind raced with thoughts of Jin and Seulgi together. The image of them holding hands or him kissing her cheek. It was almost enough to make you queasy.
You tried thinking back on the times you saw them together at work; tried to remember if they acted any different around each other versus when around other people. You’ve told Jin so much about yourself -- More than what you’re comfortable sharing with most people. Surely if he was in a relationship, that’s something he would’ve told you? Then again, sleeping with the boss may not be something he wants to put on blast. It’s not like he was ever gonna introduce her to you as his girlfriend.
Now that you thought about it… He hasn’t introduced you to Yoongi or Hobi either. Actually, when you guys dropped by his apartment to pick up his belongings, you noticed neither Hobi nor Yoongi were home. Jin did mention that Yoongi was making some preparations since he’d be studying abroad come the fall, but what about Hobi?
You frowned, knowing Jin didn’t have to really introduce you to anyone in his life if he didn’t want to, but the thought of it only further cemented the facts in your mind.
Why do you want Jin to want you so bad? You’re getting married soon, and you’ll have a family with the love of your life.
…But are you sure this is what you really want?
“I was actually thinking…” Touru interrupted your thoughts as he was pulling his napkin away from his face. “After we get married, we could probably get a place out here.”
Your eyes went wide with terror as his mere suggestion sent a shiver down your spine. “But we’ve barely lived in this house a couple years!” You reminded him, “I thought this was supposed to be the house we’d raise our children in. They’d be close their grandmother, and--”
“But isn’t this place so much nicer?” He interjected in a whiny tone. “They’d really only see her over the holidays anyway. Not to mention if we move here, I can start taking the railway to work. It’d cut down my travel time so much. Then you’d be able to use the car for the children.”
You frowned at the thought. Move way out here? Away from everything you know? Away from your mom, and your friends?
Away from Jin?
“I guess, but… What about my job?” Touru rolled his eyes. “You need to let that go. You’re not going to need it after we get married anyway. We’ll be starting our life together, and you’ll be too busy with the kids.” He went on as he broke open one of the clams on his plate. “You’ll have better things to worry about rather than dealing with the public.”
You stared down at the liquid in the bowl in front of you, having completely lost your appetite. You knew Touru was just trying to do what was best for the relationship, but your heart wasn’t in it this time. If anything, your feelings were hurt by his dismissive attitude. You remember the day you and Touru signed the lease for that house. How the tears sprung in your eyes as he kissed you in the midst of his excitement talking about, “One step closer to our little family, baby.” You’d been thrilled to hear those words. Thrilled that he was so ready to go above and beyond for you. For your future family.
Everything felt so surreal at the time. It felt like you guys were a real couple with real goals and a strong relationship. You really thought the planets had aligned perfectly so that everything was just falling into its natural place. Finally, after years of hardship and heartbreak, you really felt like you were being rewarded. You’d get the domestic bliss you’ve always dreamed of having. You’d live out the rest of your life as happy as could be. With your husband and children by your side, and your mother's unconditional love and support.
One, big happy family.
Looking back on all that almost felt like some kind of fever dream, or maybe like you’re watching a fool dive head first into the deep end of one enormous mistake. Were you making the right decision rushing into something like this with your high school sweetheart? What happened along the way that’s made you feel like everything’s gone terribly wrong? Did you miss something?
The deep-rooted sadness sat like a heavy weight on your shoulders, and it was starting to feel like it wouldn’t be letting up anytime soon. All these questions, and no one that could answer them. Why couldn’t you just be happy? You wanted to scream. You wanted to tell him things were moving too fast, and you wanted to stay at your little retail job just a little bit longer. That you wanted to get your degree and spend this time doing things as a couple you haven’t gotten to do yet.
But this was always the plan, wasn’t it? It’s why you left nursing school. It’s why this dumb retail job was only temporary. It never was a means to an end. It was so you’d have something to do while you waited for your real life to begin. And now that it’s just over the horizon, you’re… Scared? Nervous?
You have no reason to be. As long as you have Touru by your side, everything will be okay.
Right?
__
The scent of freshly brewed coffee wafted through the air as the waitress walked by your table. She offered refills to you and your friends, who were giggling away in the midst of their story. Seeing your trio in such a fit of excitement, she offered to come back later, and continued on her way.
“So after all that, Dahyun was pulling me by the hand in that cute way, ya know… Wait, I think I still have the photo!” Chae giggled as she went looking for the picture on her phone. Dahyun smiled at her, “The sun was starting to set, and I’d asked Chae like a million times if she was getting tired because we’d been there almost all day, and I wanted her to be excited--”
“Here it is!” Chae exclaimed, cutting her fiance off as she shoved the phone at you from across the table. You took it in your hands, smiling down at the screen. She was right, it looked like one of those cliche pictures of a girlfriend pulling their partner towards their next destination. You took in the little details, like all of Chae’s cute bracelets and how her nails were painted white while Dahyun’s was painted pink. Dahyun’s long hair, which had been deep blue at the time was curled, but it looked a little wind-whipped from all the rides they’d been on.
“I really wasn’t expecting it!” Chae laughed. “But she pulled me to the wishing well in Magic Kingdom and she picked me up and sat me on the edge of it--”
“She looked adorable, too! She was sitting there with her legs crossed one over the other, and her hands clasped in her lap!” Dahyun sighed, “She actually looked like a princess.”
“Your princess.” She giggled, kissing Dahyun’s cheek.
“So, she set me up there, and took my hands in hers. And she was like, ‘Chae…’,” She sighed her own name dramatically, looking over at a smiling Dahyun. “And she goes, ‘You know I love you with all my heart, right? The last seven years have been some of the happiest of my life-”
“Stoooopp! You’re making me sound sappy!” “It’s because you ARE sappy!” She laughed as Dahyun leaned all of her body weight into her, burying her face in her fiance’s thick hoodie. “But she finally got down on one knee, and she asked me if I’d marry her-”
“And she started laughing!” Dahyun yelled, looking back at you. “She was laughing and crying at the same time, and I was so confused! And then she reached into the back pocket of her shorts and pulled out her own ring!”
Little tears of joy pricked at the corners of your eyes as you smiled at them. “Why am I not surprised.” You snorted, but the girls didn’t say anything, they just kept laughing at the situation. The rims of Dahyun’s eyes were even beginning to turn pink like she was on the verge of crying.
“Awe, Dahyunnie!” Chae smiled, holding her fiance’s head against her shoulder. “I love you so much.” Dahyun whispered while Chae pressed kisses to her head. “I love you too.”
You smiled, bringing your latte to your lips and turning to look out the window situated at your booth so you could give the couple a moment of privacy.
You and Dahyun had been friends since middle school. You grew up together. She was there for you even more so than Touru was when you found out about your father’s passing. You were the first person she told she was a lesbian at fifteen years old, and you were there for her, holding her hand one year later when she told her parents. You’ve watched her relationship with Chaeyoung as it bloomed, becoming what it was today, and you couldn’t be happier to be here celebrating their engagement with her. With both of them.
“Sorry,” Dahyun laughed, wiping the remaining tears from her eyes. “I uh… I have allergies.” She snorted. “Yeah! She’s highly allergic to being in love with me.” Chae stated proudly, gently poking and prodding at Dahyun’s side until she was laughing, begging her to stop.
You leaned your chin into your hand. The sunshine reflected off Chae’s deep black hair as she laughed at another one of Dahyun’s antics. They were lost in their own little world, the playfulness that shined in their eyes and sprung with joy in their laughter, it was a bittersweet feeling that was left crawling up the back of your spine. You couldn’t pinpoint why until you started thinking about all the questions you’d had yesterday. Then you realized…
You envied them.
You looked on intently as the couple continued their back and forth until finally, the question you’d been wondering just slipped out. “Have you two ever had doubts about your relationship?”
Both girls stopped instantly to look over at you, although they seemed confused, their smiles remained the same. “I mean, that didn’t…” Your face shone with embarrassment as you cleared your throat. “Would you take any of it back is what I’m trying to ask.” You offered awkwardly. You didn’t want to come off as bitter after they’ve just shared such wonderful news with you, but they both knew you better than that.
Dahyun snorted at your question. “Of course not! I wouldn’t, at least.” She looked to her partner with a loving smile. “Have you ever doubted our relationship, babe?”
Chae hummed, popping a chocolate covered strawberry into her mouth before leaning into Dahyun’s side. “Not for a second! I mean we’ve had our fair share of arguments and there were some major problems we had to work through, but we always came out on the other side stronger.” She giggled before leaning up to kiss the other girl on the cheek. “I couldn’t be happier with Dahyunnie.”
You gave them a faux smile as you mulled over their words. You’ve been with Touru for nearly as long as they’ve been together. You’ve been through hell and highwater with him, and you know you’d do anything for him, so why were you suddenly getting cold feet?
“Are you perhaps projecting, Ms. (Y/Ln)?” Chae giggled suddenly, but her unexpected question caused you to choke on your coffee. With your face now painted a light shade of pink and a dribble of coffee, the couple laughed at your demise while you dried your chin and cheeks.
“Of course not!” You exclaimed defensively. “I just wanted to ask because…”
Why did you ask? You were not projecting, were you? You couldn’t come up with a clever answer quick enough before Dahyun was chiming in. “Weren’t you just texting me a couple weeks ago about helping a certain Jin move into his new apartment?”
“Ugh. Don’t remind me.” You rested your forehead in the palm of your hand as if you were expecting to nurse an oncoming migraine.
“Didn’t end the way you wanted to?” She pushed further as she wiggled her eyebrows, causing you to shriek in absolute shock. “Guys! This isn’t funny!” You whined, but they obviously thought otherwise.
“Do y’all think… I don’t know, that Jin is trying to ruin my relationship?” “Honey, I don’t think Jin’s trying to ruin anything for you.” Chae sighed. “I think he may have feelings for you. Either that, or he just really enjoys teasing you.”
You wrung your fingers together in your lap, unable to look her in the eye.“I just feel like sometimes it’d be better if I quit hanging around him, ya know?”
“But…” Dahyun interjected, arms crossed in front of her chest. You glanced at her sheepishly before training your eyes on the food in front of you.
“But I’d really miss him.” Chae frowned and reached across the table to take your hands in hers. “I’m sorry, beloved. The heart wants what the heart wants.”
She’s right, and you knew she was right. You just didn’t want to admit it. “Not to sound cheesy, but I think it was love at first sight.” Dahyun stated casually as she looked down at her freshly manicured nails.
“Excuse me?” You retorted, giving her a look, but she just shrugged at you. “I mean it’s entirely possible. Think about it: He’s this insanely good-looking guy with a friendly disposition. You, a woman who’s already spoken for wants to find some kind of flaw to protect yourself--”
She rolled her eyes, making a circular hand gesture as if that was going to take her words back. “Let me rephrase that: To convince yourself he wouldn’t be right; wouldn’t be any better a lover than Touru, but maybe you need to face facts… I don’t know. The way I see it, he’s the kind of man you wish Touru would be.” She explained effortlessly, leaving you utterly shell shocked.
“And to put the cherry on top: He cares about you. I mean, he really cares about you. Anybody with a brain and two working eyes can figure that one out.” She snorted, “He’s clearly attracted to you, and by the looks of it, you’re attracted to him, too. You should leave Touru for him, I certainly think you’d be happier that way.” She made her final declaration before popping one of the last few chocolate covered strawberries into her mouth.
You sat there in awe staring at her, trying to comprehend the MLA essay that just tumbled out of her mouth. You were almost impressed with Dahyun’s mind. The way she could overanalyze you, and get it right on the first try, but having it explained to you in such an obvious way was a real wakeup call. Now that they had you alone, she and Chae were going to force you to acknowledge how you felt.
”You only say all that because you don’t like Touru.” You responded weakly in the faintest hope that maybe the subject would be dropped.
“Yeah?” Dahyun spat. “You and I both know -- Chae knows. Jihyo knows. Your mom knows; my mom knows! Everybody and their grandparents know!” Dahyun dragged on and on, only coming to a sudden halt when she caught your look of unamusement.
“None of us like Touru. Not even a little bit.” She sighed, falling back into her seat.
“He’s a decent lover--” “Okay, but you deserve better than decent. You deserve an amazing lover!” Chae exclaimed, “Someone who’s going to cherish you! Someone you’d be hurting for if you let them go!”
“Kinda like Jin!” Dahyun added, giving you a knowing smile. You just looked back out the window, feeling more conflicted now than you had this morning or even yesterday.
“I'd hurt if I had to let Touru go…” You muttered stubbornly. “You guys just need to get to know him better.”
“Sweetie. We’ve known him since you started dating him five and a half years ago.” Dahyun deadpanned, “I don’t think there’s much more we can learn.” Chae nodded in agreement.
“I know this probably isn’t the best advice, but have you considered…” Chae sighed, “I don’t know… Having a bit of a fling with Jin? Just to see how he’d make you feel?”
“How would that solve my problem?!”
“I mean if he’s nice and then he’s also good in bed, it would only be more incentive to leave Touru’s useless ass in the dirt!” Chae pushed. You shoved your back harder against the suede fabric of the booth, hoping it would swallow you up and you would no longer be forced to be involved in this dumb conversation.
“Wasn’t the whole point of us going out to brunch to celebrate you guys?!” You shot forward like someone had just launched your body out of a slingshot and nearly sent your coffee tumbling across the table. Bless Dahyun and her sharp reflexes.
“We’ve celebrated enough for one brunch. We’re talking about your love life now.” Chae reminded you.
“Or a lack thereof.” Dahyun snorted. “You can’t tell me I’m wrong! I know how much of an asshole he is-”
“Guys.” You sighed. “Look. Even if I wanted to… Entertain the idea of sleeping with Jin,” Your voice was soft and shy as you took a quick glance around the restaurant. No way in hell you were gonna let him show up unannounced and insert himself into the party while you were discussing the idea of fucking him.
“Someone told me he was probably already seeing someone. Or even if he’s not seeing her, he’s crazy about her, so I don’t think I’d even have a chance with him.” You gave them a quick rundown of what Kyla told you -- Taking quick, paranoid glances over your shoulder every once in a while just to be safe.
“But they don’t act like this anymore?” Chae asked curiously.
“That’s what Kyla told me.” You sighed, “But they could’ve just… Gotten caught? HR could’ve said something? Some workplaces don’t allow couples to work together, much less where one partner is in a position of power I could imagine.” You tried to reason, but she just rolled her eyes.
“Honestly, it sounds like a thing of the past. I wouldn’t worry about it.” Dahyun shrugged. “Okay, well what about him apparently coming between Seulgi and her boyfriend?”
“You don’t know if that’s true.” Dahyun fired back. Her patience was deteriorating, but you could tell she was trying to keep her cool. The conversation was quickly turning into an argument. Maybe not with Chae, but Dahyun was ready to knock some sense into you, and lord only knows her fiance would back her up. Not to mention how much it bothered you that they could make all these assumptions based purely on what you’ve told them. Aside from that one night with Dahyun at the bar, they’ve never even met the guy.
“I really think you should go after him if you’re in love with him. What good is it doing either of you, hurting? Ignoring the tension that’s clearly there?” Chae insisted.
“Nobody is in love with anybody!” You retorted in defense. No matter how much you tried to deny it, their advice did sound tempting. Sounded like something that you’ve wanted for a while now, but it was one thing to confirm those feelings for yourself. To know you’re crushing on one of your best friends and coming to terms with it. You could accept it and live with it. Albeit painfully so, but you could do it.
It was a matter of voicing those feelings to the world; to the man on the receiving end of those feelings. You’d be putting so much at stake. Not just with your marriage, but with Jin himself. If Touru’s bad attitude towards Jin wouldn’t run him off, then asking him to have sex with you would.
“I’ve come to terms with it, you guys.” You sighed. “Jin’s a kind man and everything, but imagine if he actually were dating Seulgi. I could never come between them. I wouldn’t even want to.” You regarded them with a small smile. “Besides, I can’t hurt Touru like that. We’ve been together for so long, and I still love him. We’re just under a lot of stress right now is all.” You nodded to yourself.
“It’ll be okay.”
Dahyun’s lips stretched into a thin line, the tip of her tongue faintly outlined in her cheek. Your answer clearly wasn’t the one she wanted to hear, but she knew how stubborn you were. Knew there wasn’t much she could say to sway you one way or the other.
That doesn’t mean she wouldn’t try.
“Fine.” She bit back with a cat-like glare, “Do what you want, but I’m telling you For a Fact: Touru isn’t good for you.” Her hands were tightly clenched into fists on the table until her wrists went limp, and her arms slunk down beneath the surface.
“He’s a controlling man who’s looking out for nobody else but himself. If you don’t want to go after Jin, fine. You do you. But you need to take a step back and see Touru for who he really is, and I’d suggest doing it before you’re stuck with him for the rest of your life.”

Essential Avengers: Avengers #227: Testing... 1... 2... 3!
January, 1983
Welcome to 1983! And the year starts off with the greatest gift of all: more Captain Marvel!
Also, She-Hulk strutting, Hank pondering, and Wasp lunching.
Truly, this issue promises much for six dimes. You’re blessed these days to find a comic that promises half as much for ten dimes.
I’ve said before that I like covers that are just ‘hey here’s several things that are going to happen in this issue.’ And I still do. Is rad.
Also rad? We have our next long term Avengers writer starting in this issue. Roger Stern!
So last time (in Spider-Man), boat cop Monica Rambeau punched a science machine and got filled with science. She can turn her body into any kind of energy. She quit the boat cops and became a superhero in New Orleans for a couple weeks but then learned that she was going to explode. So she went to New York to try to get some science to fix the science.
Since Reed Richards wasn’t available, she wound up going to the Avengers for help. Hijinxes ensued as they must, but Iron Man was able to siphon the excess energy out of her by causing a lot of property damage to his own property.
Imagine the AU where Reed wasn’t on vacation and Monica ended up more tied to the Fantastic Four.
The issue starts with the Avengers and the all-new Captain Marvel hanging out in the combination lounge and science room.
For when you need to calibrate something but with an eye towards leisure.
Since Iron Man siphoned off a lot of energy from Captain Marvel, Wasp decided to test her to make sure her powers haven’t been affected.
The test has Captain Monica take off from Avengers Mansion and then hit a series of satellites as different forms of energy. One as light, one as microwaves, another as radio waves before returning to the mansion as x-rays.
And since she’s traveling at the speed of light, she gets back before the Avengers even take a breath. Although using the telemetry machines he assembled for the test, Iron Man clocks her in at under two seconds.
Cap notes that she’s so fast that she makes Quicksilver look like shit. Because running is fine, if you can’t turn into light.
And Wasp is so impressed that she instantly invites Captain Marvel to join the Avengers as an Avenger-in-training.
Cap frets about the Avengers’ government clearances but Wasp is ahead of him with the power of NETWORKING.
She already got a limited-security training program approved by the government. Because she and the First Lady have the same masseur.
It really is about who you know.
Cap examines the paperwork, sees that everything seems to be in order, and agrees that Jan’s plan is best plan. She-Hulk is all for it too. As is Thor. Only Hawkeye doesn’t voice support, but keeps his thoughts to himself.
So, Monica is in the Avengers! As an in-training!
With that established, Wasp leaves for a brunch appointment.
That Wasp and her brunching.
Cap and Iron Man start breaking down the Monica-Measuring-Machine while Hawkeye starts grousing.
Because Hawkeye.
Hawkeye: “Hey, am I the only one who’s noticed how bossy our boss-lady’s gotten lately? We didn’t used to get called in on the run just to screen new members.”
She-Hulk: “What’s the matter, Robin Hood? Can’t stand being around a few strong women?”
Captain America: “The calling of special meetings is the group-leader’s privilege, Hawk -- you know that! I think Jan is just growing into her post as Avengers chairwoman... and doing a great job of it, I might add!”
Hawkeye has not drunk much respect respect women juice around this point in his life. Putting aside his repeated kissing unreceptive women, he also went ‘haha i hope you learned feminism is pointless’ during the Evils of Feminism Halloween issue.
She-Hulk agrees with Cap’s take and then picks up the entire five ton machine and walks off with it, I think mostly to show off. Or strut her stuff, as the cover said.
This just sets off Hawkeye some more.
Hawkeye: “That’s another thing! I never used to have big, green broads challenging me to arm-wrestle everytime I walked through the door! Do you know what it’s like to... to... Aw, the heck with it! I have to get back to work!”
Cap: “Welcome to the future, Hawkeye.”
Hahaha amazing.
Razz the heck out of him, Cap.
Its possible that he’s exaggerating but I do believe that She-Hulk would do that, just to flex on Hawkeye. What with her muscles.
But I wonder if the reason for this bad Hawkeye mood is that in a rarely precedented turn of events, the Avengers have three women on the team.
That’s still four guys to three girls but since its usually one girl to every three guys, Hawkeye might feel suddenly outnumbered.
Because he is a fool.
After Hawkeye stomps off, Cap remarks that Hawkeye needs to learn a few new things about women.
But Iron Man is lost in his own women troubles. He beats himself up verbally for getting involved with Wasp without being honest with her about his identity.
He even wonders if it would be for the best, aka less awkward for everyone, if he resigned from the team.
Cap tells him that wouldn’t solve anything.
Captain America: “You made a mistake. We all make mistakes. The important thing is to learn from them... to bounce back. You can do it, mister! You’re an Avenger!”
Iron Man: (So was Hank, Cap... So was Hank.)
Interesting to see how the fall of Yellowjacket is still rippling in the pond.
But here’s what I’d tell Morose Iron Man: Hank didn’t learn from his mistake. He doubled and tripled down on it. If you learn a thing, you’re already off to a good start.
Thor has apparently been sitting across the room the whole time, listening to all of this. But he is also lost in his own thoughts.
He is also thinking whether he should resign from the team but so that he can focus more on re-establishing Donald Blake’s life. And even though some of his proudest moments have been as an Avenger, it is taking away Donald time.
Several floors below, She-Hulk casually carries that five ton machine on her shoulder. So casual that she reads the Daily Bugle while she walks.
She-Hulk, a Californian: “‘The Daily Bugle’ -- HAH! They call this a newspaper? New Yorkers wouldn’t know a real paper if it bit ‘em on their behinds! Sometimes I think I’ll go stir crazy in this town!”
There is apparently nothing for her to do in New York between Avengers missions. Nothing to do. In New York.
???????
But she does find a help wanted ad for a part-time instructor for a health spa that interests her.
You have a LAW DEGREE.
First off, how are you not in ridiculous law school debt?
Second, LAW DEGREE.
She’s so engrossed in the ad that she does Jarvis a fright, forcing him and Monica to squeeze up against the wall to avoid being smacked by the machine She-Hulk is carrying.
Jarvis bemoans that new Avengers are always a trial before hurriedly excluding Monica.
She diplomatically takes no offense.
Jarvis continues his tour of the mansion, taking Monica to the records room which has not only all of the Avengers case files but also cross-referenced files from the Fantastic Four, the UN, SHIELD, Interpol, and a bunch of federal agencies.
If the Avengers love anything its drama but if they love two things its reading up on stuff. Like how Hawkeye was like ‘ah ha the Taskmaster, I read your file’ in the issue where he shot Ant-Man on an arrow.
Monica Marvel asked to see the records room because she’s following up on the Thing telling her that someone else went by Captain Marvel before she did.
So Jarvis punches up the Avengers’ file on Mar-Vell.
That’s a bit of a neat touch. If she’s going to go around as Captain Marvel (and she has to, its a trademark squat) she’s going to be respectful and learn about the man that her name is going to evoke.
Meanwhile, in Central Park, Reed and Sue Richards?
Well, they’re on the cover so its not much of a surprise. They’re Wasp’s brunch appointment. A brunchment.
Sue decided that they should jog to Tavern-On-The-Green. Reed has decided that he hates jogging.
Sue: “Oh, no! It’s 11:59! I knew we should have started sooner!”
Reed: “I wish we hadn’t started at all.”
So when Sue complains about them arriving late, Reed goes heck yeah i can get out of jogging, scoops Sue up and does FANTASTIC LEG STRETCHING which is very different from jogging.
Good thing he made those jogging suits out of unstable molecules.
In mere seconds, Reed covers the half mile to the tavern to meet the nonplussed Janet van Wasp and the oppositely nonplussed waiter.
So, Sue and Jan are fast friends forever now because of that one time they had brunch.
That’s how it works in their circle.
And Sue called and invited Jan out to brunch. But not just to get her back, but because she’s worried about Jan.
Well she says “we’ve been worried” but Reed probably had to be reminded that Sue has friends.
Jan: “Sue, you’re a dear! But you’re worried about nothing! I’m perfectly capable of taking care of myself. Sure, it’s taken awhile to get used to being single again -- but I’m fine! Really!”
And like someone who is totally fine, she insists that she’s fine and then immediately excuses herself to the bathroom to powder her nose.
Noses sure needed a lot of powdering back in the day.
And anyone that insists that they’re perfectly fine and then runs off to the bathroom is either going to cry or going to powder their nose in a more narcotics fashion.
After Jan heads off to the bathroom to powder her nose in whichever way, Reed and Sue talk about her behind her back.
Reed: “Well, she’s certainly putting up a good front -- !”
Sue: “Yes, but it’s just a front! She’s keeping everything bottled up inside her! And she’s been through so much lately... Hank’s expulsion from the Avengers, the divorce... and now that she’s become chairwoman of the Avengers -- ! I’m afraid for her, Reed!”
Reed: “We can’t help her if she won’t let us, Sue. Jan’s a strong-willed woman -- I just pray that she’s strong enough to bend with the pressure... and not break!”
So its not one thing Sue is worried about. Its all the things. And there are a lot of things.
I don’t know what Sue means by “now” when she says Jan became chairwoman of the Avengers.
That happened the instant she came back from her divorce vacation from the team. I mean, it is plausibly a thing to worry about that she’s taken on too much in too little a time and just putting a smile on.
But she’s been leadering the Avengers. Its gone okay.
Anyway, Jan did go into the bathroom to not cry in front of her new best friend, Sue.
Jan: “I won’t cry... I won’t! Maybe I don’t have Hank around to lean on anymore -- but I can tough it out! I’ll show ‘em... I don’t need him... Don’t need anybody! After all, I’m an Avenger! I’m the leader of the Avengers!”
And she walks out of the bathroom with feelings entirely managed and a smile back on.
I think the Avengers needing anybody is why the Avengers are Avengers, though. Bunch of usual loners teamed up once and realized ‘wait this is great.’
So like in the Jan and Tony are disgustingly cute together story, we get another glimpse that things haven’t been as easy on Jan as she lets on.
I don’t mind. This is what being a well-rounded character is, probably. I’ll see how things go.
It’s like... There’s this period of the Teen Titans book where Donna Troy became the team leader because Dick Grayson was having a lot of identity problems. And Donna suddenly started being like ‘I have no idea what I’m doing’ and making a lot of mistakes. And one could suspect that she was being set up as a less competent leader to make Dick look better. Kind of like how Shuri (initially) and Maria Hill exist to make T’Challa and Nick Fury look better in comparison.
As long as they don’t do that to Jan or something else like that, I’m fine for Jan to have a more complicated situation.
And it doesn’t seem like it’ll go that direction because I've heard she’s going to be the team leader for a while and mostly everyone (except Hawkeye) thinks she’s doing a good job.
But we leave brunch to the opposite of brunch, dusk. And at Ryker’s Island Penitentiary.
Recently, the government has been scattering all of the prisoners with superpowers to prisons across the country. Probably to avoid creating a powder keg situation.
*coughs in Raft*
The only superpowered prisoner left is “probably the worst of the lot.”
Because it’s Hank Pym.
Good dunk at his expense, prison guard.
But actually because “What could be lower than an Avenger who’s gone bad?”
And there’s a Dr. Paul Edmonds here to see Hank.
Hank is sorta blase to it, since he’s seen about thirty by this point. Presumably many of which have been paid for by Tony Stark’s guilty conscience.
Edmonds doesn’t say whether he’s from the prosecution or the defense (and Hank admits it doesn’t really matter to him) but he’s here to determine whether Hank is fit to stand trial.
What with his weird history.
Hank Pym: “Doctor, when I think back over my history, as you call it, I sometimes wonder if I was ever fit for anything!”
Wow, nice self-own, Hank.
Anyway, almost the entire rest of the issue is the Grand Fairly Exhaustive Hank Pym Backstory Exposition Dump.
Of course, with the fillering of the previous run, Hank has been in jail for a bit. And a lot of the relevant backstory stuff is decades past. And Iron Man’s recap of it is over a year ago.
The long-awaited trial is coming up soon so Stern has to get the readers refamiliarized with this stuff.
Lets try to breeze through?
Hank’s life? Sucks. A lot.
He received his doctorate while his friends were undergraduates because he was a workaholic and because “it was easier to deal with chemicals than with people.”
He probably wouldn’t have ever left his lab if his coworkers hadn’t managed to drag him to parties occasionally.
Hank met his first wife Maria Trovaya at one of those reluctant social occasions.
Hank: “She was beautiful, intelligent, witty... I couldn’t believe she was attracted to me! It was like some kind of miracle!”
Wow, another amazing self-own.
They fell so in love with each other that they were married in months.
And then tragedy.
Maria decided that the perfect place to go on honeymoon was to her homeland of communist Hungary where her father had been an enemy of the state.
Sooo. The secret police beat the shit out of Hank and took Maria off to be killed.
Dang.
Hank had his first breakdown when he heard. And the State Department had a hell of a time getting Hank released from Hungarian captivity.
When Hank got back to the US, he buried himself in his work. And the mad lad decided to invent a shrinking potion.
Hank: “It shouldn’t have worked, but I made it work!”
I like when people stop and realize how bonkers the Marvel universe is.
And that Hank put all this effort into inventing this thing and then in a moment of clarity went ‘holy shit I can’t believe that actually worked!’
This recap doesn’t mention that Hank poured his invention down the drain after having a bad experience in an anthill but either way, the invention led to him becoming Ant-Man!
Sort of accidentally! He didn’t really plan to become a “costumed crusader” he just sort of happened to do it.
Hank: “In a way, it almost felt good to be battling the kind of vermin who had killed my Maria!”
But he admits that he wasn’t ever truly comfortable in the role of superhero.
Vicarious catharsis for his murdered wife is possibly the reason why he can’t stay away from it though.
Although it mixes with Hank throwing himself into science so he doesn’t have to people. And Hank feeling insecurity compared to his peers in both superheroics and science so he keeps jumping unhappily between the two.
He’s got a lot going on.
Then his life changed forever again when he met a Dr. Vernon van Dyne and his daughter Janet.
Hank: “Though she was barely twenty, her physical resemblance to Maria was striking. And I soon discovered that Janet van Dyne was more than just a frivolous young debutante. Her father was killed... murdered, and when she tearfully vowed to see justice done, I saw a strength of will... so much like Maria’s!”
Hank revealed that he was the Ant-Man and offered to make her his partner.
So, yeah, maybe the relationship was kind of not on the healthiest footing from the beginning. There’s an age gap (Hank says she’s barely half his age although I don’t know that he’s supposed to be in his forties?). Hank is using her as a replacement goldfish. She’s probably clinging to him in a similarly unhealthy manner, having just lost her father and this guy goes ‘hey want some superpowers?’
(Interesting but obvious bit here is that Hank says that with his further research, he could give Jan better powers than his own. What with the wings and the Wasp sting and all, yeah its kind of obvious that her powerset was better. Its interesting though considering how insecure Hank would get later.)
It would have taken a lot of emotional maturity from the both of them to keep it from becoming the unbalanced relationship that it did and neither of them were that emotionally mature, I think. Hank doesn’t even like to people.
He also doesn’t like to Ant-Man. Even with a partner, the role makes him ill at ease.
Hank: “No one can truly know the fragility, the vulnerability of life, as I have. It takes a very strong man to shrink to the size of an ant and still feel sure of himself. And I was never that strong.”
And here there’s a nice bit of arc welding.
Back in Avengers #1, Ant-Man is the one that suggests that Ant-Man, Wasp, Hulk, Iron Man, and Thor become a team.
I don’t know what Stan Lee’s original reason for having Ant-Man be the one to say it. It might have just been a flow thing. Ant-Man had just spoken to explain how his ants have trapped Loki in a tank so rather than pivot to a new character, Stan may have had Ant-Man bring it up.
But in this grand recap of all things Hank Pym, Hank explains his motive.
Feeling ill at ease as Ant-Man, feeling unsure of himself from seeing the world at the size of an ant, he had found some strong allies that he didn’t dare to lose.
Interesting dots to connect.
But then Hank went ‘oh no i fucked up.’
Hank: “I soon realized that Ant-Man would constantly be overshadowed by the more powerful teammates -- at least one of whom the Wasp found most attractive!”
It’s Thor. Of course, it’s Thor.
Even though it may have been a ploy to make him jealous, Hank locked himself in the lab to improve his powers.
Of course, we know Hank Pym’s usual string of luck with locking himself into his lab.
So what happens next is incredibly obvious but no less funny. But its so funny that I had to look up whether it was how it was originally portrayed or invented for this extended flashback.
When testing his new growth formula, Hank smashes his own house like a sillier Alice in Wonderland.
And this actually happened in Tales to Astonish #49.
Amazing.
Hank really does have consistent luck with science.
And what makes it funnier is that according to this extended flashback, making himself super-strong and giant didn’t actually make Hank feel like a more valuable member of the team.
He felt clumsy and inept. Not to mention that testing an experimental formula on himself WAS REALLY BAD FOR HIS HEALTH.
And it was Jan realizing what was going on with Hank rather than concern for herself having been shot that made Jan suggest that the two retire from Avengersing (leading to the Kooky Quartet).
But Jan actually really enjoyed being the Wasp and Hank must have felt shitty pulling her away from it because as we know, he eventually ends up back on the team with more limited growth powers and a name change to Goliath.
He actually felt like he was pulling his weight around this time, though, because he was the most experience member of the team.
Of course, its also around this time that he accidentally created Ultron, which is a big whoopsie.
But he made what he considers a worse whoopsie.
Hank: “But even the responsibility for unwittingly unleashing Ultron on the world often paled in comparison to my trouble relationship with Jan. Having come into her full inheritance, she wanted to underwrite my research. I wanted to pay my own way, but I couldn’t find the words to tell her.”
Probably because he was more comfortable with chemicals than people. Open and healthy communication is essential in a relationship but its also difficult.
He also wanted to marry Jan but at the same time felt too unsure of himself to propose.
So Hank did what Hank do and retreated into his lab.
Where he accidentally spilled some chemicals and had another breakdown after getting high on fumes, becoming convinced that he was actually another person entirely.
I don’t know why but the panel of Hank declaring “So, Goliath won’t marry Janet van Dyne, eh? Then, there shall be no more Goliath!” cracks me up.
Anyway, Jan saw right through Yellowjacket and decided to play along and when Hank was shocked back to reality, he discovered he was married.
Which. Uh. Has gotten more scrutiny in the years after it was published. Including this year of 1983.
Hank: “I guess even some psychotic episodes can be beneficial.”
Dr. Edmonds: “Do you think that was the case?”
Hank: “I did then. Now... I’m not so sure. I know I wanted to believe it then. Jan and I were married. The circumstances didn’t seem important.”
After the honeymoon, things begin to sour. Hank tried to stick to small sizes as being better for his health. And he tried to stay away from the Avengers too but Jan wanted them to be Avengers together.
Hank: “I had to keep trying for her, even though my heart wasn’t in it! The pressure got to be too much, my work began to slide. More and more projects were ending in failure.”
He smashed up his lab to lash out at something, out of frustration that he had swallowed his pride to accept Jan’s money and was now wasting it on fruitless projects.
Jan started trying harder and harder to prop up Hank’s ego.
But he was still a walking emotional wreck so when Ultron returned, it didn’t take much to tip him over the edge into another breakdown.
This one came with AMNESIA! Hank though he was Ant-Man ant-again and attacked the Avengers because he didn’t recognize Vision, Scarlet Witch, Wonder Man, Beast, or even Captain America as being Avengers.
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again and again. Ants is best power.
Hank: “It’s almost funny in a way. I took on the Avengers single-handed and nearly beat them! My finest hour as a ‘hero’... and I wasn’t even in my right mind!”
That does sour what is an otherwise pretty impressive stomp. When Spider-Man stomps entire X-Men team, its held up as one of his greatest moments. When Hank does it to the Avengers its like ‘welp there goes another Hank Pym breakdown.’
Iron Man was able to devise a variant of electro-shock therapy which undid the damage Ultron did to Hank’s mind which sure sounds like a thing electro-shock therapy could do.
Hank was getting back into the swing of things as Yellowjacket when Henry Peter Gyrich pulled the rug out from him.
As Henry Peter Gyrich is known to do.
With him as the government liaison, the Avengers were ordered to slim down the roster. And Hank got the boot while Jan was kept on the team.
At first Hank was glad for it because it gave him an excuse to leave the team and go back to his lab work.
Buuuuut as happens when Hank does do that, his lab work became fruitless and frustrating.
And with Jan on the Avengers, he could go days without seeing her. And he felt alone and lost without her.
Its the irony of his life.
Jan convincing Hank to stay on the Avengers isn’t good for him. Him not being on the Avengers while she is, isn’t good for him. And being kept from being on the Avengers isn’t good for her.
A possible compromise might have been to have him working at Avengers Mansion as an on-staff but uncostumed science advisor. But Hank may not have accepted that, what with the pride.
I wonder about it though because Hank will later join the West Coast Avengers in a strictly support capacity for a while.
Anyway, Hank having a bad time in the lab coincided with Captain America reorganizing the roster.
Hank: “I began to think that maybe ‘Avenging’ was all I could do. As Yellowjacket, I pinch-hit for other members whenever possible. And when Captain America invoked executive privilege to further pare the team down to a more workable six members, I jumped back on board. I had such high hopes. The ‘new’ Avengers were practically the original group. This time, I thought I could finally be the kind of man Jan wanted me to be. But I was only fooling myself. By then, I was in no state of mind to be an Avenger!”
Because, yeah. This is the part of the Hank Pym Lore Dump that we hit the Elf-Queen incident.
And then the court-martial.
Hank: “I had to redeem myself somehow! I became desperate! In the hours that followed, I must have cracked completely!”
Enough that building an indestructible kill-bot to kill his friends to make them realize how useful he is seemed like a good idea.
It wasn’t.
The robot kicked the crap out of Hank before he could hit the secret shut-down switch and Jan saved the day by hitting the switch instead.
Hank: “Jan divorced me, threw me out... Not that I blame her! Did you know that I actually struck her on the day of the court-martial?! Lord, I must have been out of my mind! I had compounded one mistake with another, and my whole life collapsed like a house of cards.”
Dr. Edmonds asks if being estranged from his friends and broke was why he tried to steal the federal reserve of adamantium but Hank denies this last bit.
He was played a fool by EGGHEAD!
Hank: “But I’ll tell you this, Edmonds, I won’t play the fool any longer! I’ve learned so much about myself -- the hard way -- in the last few weeks. I’ll have my day in court, and I’ll beat those charges!”
Dr. Edmonds: “I see. And in that way, you think you’ll win back your wife?”
Hank: “No. I thought that was possible once. I don’t any more. I’ve lost her. It hurts, but I’ll just have to accept it. Now, all I want back is my dignity.”
Oof.
I’ve been kind of low-key snarking at Hank for acting like he’d be able to easily win Jan back given what went down but it hurts a little to see him give up on that hope, even if he seems resigned to it.
LATER, Dr. Edmonds returns to his office and calls his SECRET EMPLOYER
Its Tony Stark. Of course its Tony Stark.
We already knew that Tony has been throwing a lot of money at the problem of Hank to assuage his guilty conscience. And that it included making shrinks available.
Dr. Edmonds: “Dr. Pym has been through more than any two men should! He’s suffered at least four nervous breakdowns in the last decade! He has a massive inferiority complex -- but the man is fit to stand trial. Moreover, I don’t think we can swing an insanity plea. Despite his insistence that this Egghead person set him up!”
I wonder if Iron Man was trying to swing an insanity plea. Get the case dismissed. Wouldn’t put it past him!
And honestly. What would you think if you friend had a nervous breakdown, built a kill-bot to kill you, wandered off and disappeared for a while, and re-emerged after heisting a whole bunch of adamantium and claiming that Egghead made him do it?
Dr. Edmonds asks whether it is possible that Egghead was involved since he is a serious psychiatrist man and doesn’t keep up with the superhero biz. But Tony tells him that Egghead died in an explosion in Defenders #42.
Edmonds ponders that may indicate an even deeper delusion, while not suspecting that his pencil has been bugged.
BY EGGHEAD!
Its not a great bug in the sense that it seems to have a bright flashing light. But in the sense of ‘how the hell did you get a bug in a pencil, Egghead?’ its a very great bug.
Egghead, presumably taking a break from his plan to invent eternal youth to get infinite money and then buy the world to save from having to do the Effort of taking it over, hears Dr. Edmonds say “Still, Pym seems convinced he’ll be exonerated, Mr. Stark.”
Egghead: “Ha-ha-ha! Henry always did have faith in the legal system! I suppose I shall have to shatter that faith for him! I knew it was a wise move to let the world think that Egghead is dead! No one searches for a ‘late’ fugitive! Just as no one will suspect who is truly behind Pym’s ultimate disgrace -- when my plans ruin his day in court!”
WOW! You are super petty, Egghead!

“Is this really happening? Holy shit this is happening.”
Y/n was rambling as the two ride down a different route just like the mandalorian said last night. He was lucky enough to get some sleep last night since Y/n suddenly blew up in excitement once Dyn mentioned about helping him escape the royalty life. “this is really happening!!” Dyn groans and stops the other with his own horse. “Listen I said that I was going to help you but if you continue to be annoying then I wont hesitate to turn us around and take you directly to Druklok.” The mandalorian threatens out, he wants in the mood right now.
Y/n’s blinks a few times with wide eyes before nodding in return. “Got it, be less annoying.” He says with a nervous smile. The mandalorian turns his horse back to the front, rolling his eyes under his helmet. He was slowly getting a liking from the prince but now he was just getting on his nerves. He knows that the prince is excited to leave everything behind and to start fresh in a whole new place.
As the two began to ride faster through the woods and valleys, the prince was able to experience things that he’s never experienced before! Coming across other villages and new tribes that he’s only heard in stories, he should’ve gone out more often but knowing his father he wouldn’t allow him to travel farther than the village that was close to the kingdom. Y/n loved the village and the people but this was new to him and he was loving this, finally running away from home. A place that only gave him bad memories.
—
“Will be stopping here.” He hears the mandalorian say, getting off his own horse. Y/n does the same and held onto the reigns, gently touching the horse mane as he looks around the small town. “This place looks cozy?” He tilts his head to the side, the people of this town were different. They had their own stands up as the sold materials and expensive items that he’s only seen in a few places. “You’ll get used to it, besides we’re only staying here for the night.” The mandalorian finds them a nice place to stay for the night. “Your father gave us two weeks to arrive to Druklok and where we are going is only two days away so he wont suspect a thing.” Y/n follows the mandalorian through the villages stables, apparently they are to sleep in the stables. Not that Y/n was complaining, he’s slept in the stables back at home many times. “Won’t my father send out guards to come searching for me once he gets word about us never arriving to Druklok.” He finds a perfect spot to set his bag down, tossing himself onto the huge pile of dry grass, letting out a tired sigh.
“He will, but where we are going is far away from everything and its hidden. He won’t find us.” Dyn was adjusting his basker armor, sitting down in his own spot he leans back to stare at the ceiling. “SO where exactly are we going?” The prince turns onto his side to get a better look of the mandalorian. The other continued to stare up at the ceiling, “Back to my place, figured the others wouldn’t mind having you around as long as you dont tell anyone about where we are located.”
Y/n’s eyes widen. “you sure that’s a good idea?” He whispered out. “I dont want to be a burden and ruin your culture or something with me around.” He quickly began to say, making up some more excuse to not go. The mandalorian rolls his eyes, turning to his side he used his gloved hand to cover the others mouth, stopping him from continuing on. “Stop it, you are going and you wont be a burden and that’s final.” He could feel the princes warm breath against his gloved hand, slowly uncovering his mouth. “Now sleep.” He commands, turning back to his own side of the dry grass, facing his back to y/n.
The prince licks his lips, breathing softly he curls up in his spot. He watched as the mandalorian shifts around trying to find a comfortable position, moving his head around, Y/n noticed how uncomfortable he feels with the helmet on. “You should take it off.” He blurts out, gasping in shock he covers his own mouth. Dyn sighs, “You know I can’t do that, it remains on even if I’m around someone.” He answers. “This is the way.”
Y/n thinks and sits up, “I won’t look.” He reached inside his bag and finds some bandages, smiling he uses that to cover up his eyes. Using it as a blindfold, The mandalorian sat up and watched the other blindfold himself. “Won’t look, promise.” Y/n held his hands up, “and I always keep a promise.” He adds.
Dyn waved his hand in front of the princes face, his body language didn’t change which gave him the cue to remove his helmet without worrying about the other seeing him. “I’m guessing that its off?” The prince could hear the mandalorian removing his own helme, the rustling of grass as he sets it down. “It’s off.”
“Good.” Y/n smiles proudly before lying back down, getting hisemlf adjusted. Yawning he curls up, “Get some rest mando.” He mumbled out with a smile before he began to fall asleep first.
Once dyn took notice of the other sleeping he was able to let out a deep breath that he was holding in. He lies back down but this time he felt a little more comfortable without the helmt, he placed his arms behind his head and stares up at the broken ceiling that had a hole on top, giving him a perfect view of the stars.
—
The next morning, dyn was the first to be awake. Making sure that he had his helmet back on before the prince could wake up, he expected the prince to break his promise and remove the blindfold during the night but as it turns out he kept his promise. “Time to get up your highness.” Dyn nudged the other awake, causing the prince to groan, turning around to face his back, rolling away from the other. “Five more minutes.” He mumbles out.
Dyn rolls his eyes. “I thought a prince was suppose to wake up early.”
“Yeah but this prince is no longer a prince...” Y/n sits up and removed his blindfold, wincing form the bright light as he adjusts his eyes, rubbing them. “Is the helmet back on?” He suddenly asks, keeping his eyes closed for a little while longer until dyn gave him the confirmation. “It’s back on.”
“Good.” Y/n blinks his eyes opened and smiles weakly. “Can we just travel for the next two days without stopping so that I can sleep in for two whole days straight?” He hears the mandalorian chuckle at him, standing up he dusts himself off and picks out the dry grass that have stuck onto his clothes before moving over to his horse. “Can you handle two days without stopping and eating?” Y/n whines, adjusting the horses saddle before climbing on, lying his head on the horses mane. “I hate you...” he grumbled out.
“And I find you annoying.” Dyn replies back without hesitation, getting offended ‘Hey’ from the other. He climbs onto his own horse and smiles. “Come on lets get moving.” He felt the horse move, leaving the stables and passing through the village once more before they reach a clearing that lead them to their next destination. Y/n was lucky enough to bring a book from home, reading it as the two rode in silence. He had an apple hanging from his mouth, flipping the pages in his book before finally taking another bite of his apple.
The mandalorian stares at the other for a short while, still getting used to the princes presence. Everytime people spoke about royalty he always thought of them to be brats and selfish until he finally met the prince who actually had his own standers and didn’t see anyone as a low life. He was different, that’s what caused the mandalorian to get a small set of feelings for the other. He already knows that the prince isn’t interested in women so he doesn’t need to worry about that anymore. He’s also a single father with a kid waiting for him back at home, will the prince really be up to helping him raise the little one? I mean the prince has asked about the kid many times which has suddenly turned into an interest for the man. Maybe he’s the kind of guy that he can actually get along with, the two have been talking about each others past lives and no judgement has happened between the two. He feels like he can trust this prince with his life.
“Mando?”
Dyn hears the prince next to him, turning to face him he smiles. “You okay?” Y/n asks with a small worrried look on his face, his hand was clutching his own book. “I’m alright, why you asking?” The prince shrugs, “You’ve just been quiet for a long period of time and I know that we usually do that and its normal but it felt like the air around us suddenly went tense you know?” The mandalorian was surpised by the princes observation. He’s use to travel alone and in quiet so he didn’t notice anything change between the two until now. “I was just thinking.” Said Dyn.
“Okay, I know its a long trip. Maybe we can talk in case you’re bored?” He offers. “Alright, What do you walk to talk about.” Mando breaths out a sigh, placing his hands in front of him and crossing them, causing the prince to glance down at the way his hands are arranged, blushing a little. Suddenly finding it attractive.
He clears his throat before speaking. “Mando isnt your name is it?”
Mando sighs again, shaking his head. “I know where this is going.”
“Do you really?” Y/n smirks at the mandalorian. “I bet you I can guess your name.”
“Is that a challenge, cyare?”
Y/n’s eyes widen at the sudden language change, he opens his mouth to ask what it meant but decides not too. “A challenge that you must accept.”
—
“Jackson?”
“No.”
“Lupin?”
“No.”
“Oh! REN!”
“Please stop.”
The prince has been at it for the past two hours now, trying to guess the mandalorian name but hasn’t succeed. He wasn’t even close to win this challenge. “Come on just give me a hint!” He other begs, whining at the same time as he leans back in his own horse.
The mandalorian continued to look forward before sighing in defeat. “Has three letters.”
“MAX!”
“No again, now stop trying or else you’ll get even more annoying before we even arrive to the next village.” Said mando.
Y/n grumbles, crossing his arms over his chest as he pouts. “Next village is another two hours away, we still have time to do something.” He shrugs. Leaning back, he lifts his hand up, shaping it into an ‘L’. “What are you doing?”
“Calculating our distance.”
“By looking at the sky?”
Y/n glares at the mandalorian, “It’s not that hard, I learned this from my mother.” He explains, moving his hand around a current angle. “It mostly works at night, the stars help you and guide you to where you are heading. I’m still learning how to do it when the sun is out, usually the clouds help too.” He lowers his hand back down to his side, sitting himself up.
“Does it really work?” The mandalorian has heard of different ways of knowing where you are but this is new to him. “Of course it does and to prove it,” he grins, repeating the same process again. “We should be approaching a small town in a few minutes.” He tells him, “I don’t think that possible to know.”
Y/n smiles and pouts over the hill, the mandalorian turns to see a small town appearing as the got closer. “Hell, I guess you were right.” He says softly with a smile. “Think you can teach me something like that?” The prince chuckles at the mandalorian. “I can try but it wont be easy.” He nudged the horse forward, the two were approaching the town. Y/n was smiling as they got closer, but as they approached he noticed a familiar crowd that he’s seen before. “Shit.” He hissed out. “What is it?”
“Imperial guards.” He whispered out and stops the horse from moving any closer, he quickly gets off and gets down. The mandalorian does the same once he mentioned ‘imperial’. “What are they doing all the wya out here?” He asks, lying down by the other as they watched the guards walk around the entrance of town. There red capes flowing behind them as Y/n bites his lip. He thinks about his father and groans, slamming his fist agaisnt the ground. “Damn he knows, he knew that I was going to leave.” He exclaims out in a hushed tone. “My father already knows me to well that he must’ve sent these imperial guards out to bring me back home if I were cause problems.” Y/n Grips his hair in frustration.
Mando listens to the other rage, he turns his gaze back to town and looks around. trying to find a way around without being seen. A plan quickly comes into mind once he spots a carriage being pulled by a horse, the owner was distracted collecting some herbs. “I’ve got a plan.” He tells y/n. “Will have to lead the horses around town so that we meet them on the other side, while that happens you and I will sneak inside by hiding inside that mans carriage.” He stands up and grabs the horses, pulling them forward. “Uh, mando I dont think its going to be that easy.”
—
“Wow, it was that easy.”
Mandos plan had actually worked, they were able to get through town without being sene by the imperial guards, but that doesn’t mean that they wont be walking around the streets. The carriage had only made it half way through the town which meant that they had to continue on foot. “As much as your planned worked, We could really use a second one right now.” He whispered.
The two were hiding behind a building, they were causally making their way through town until they bumped into two guards. Causing the prince to squeak in surpise and cause attention, so yes it was his fault that they were chasing after them. “Maybe if you kept quiet we could’ve made it across.” The mandalorian glared at the prince but that only caused the other to glare back. “Hey they are after me, not you!” He whispered out in a hush tone, watching the mandalorian look both ways before he takes his arm and dragged the prince through the crowds.
Y/n leans close to the mandalorian, not wanting to lose the other while they walked around the crowded streets. “How far is the next exit?” He asks and makes his way around the place. “Just a little further, once we arrive we get on our horses and leave before we get noticed again.” He instructs which the prince agrees to very quickly.
As they make a sharp turn, y/n notices an imperial guard watching them form afar, he was following the two through the crowds. “Mando.” He whispered close to the others ears. “We’re being followed.” This caused the mandalorian to glance over his shoulder, spotting a familiar red coat he pulls the prince along and began to make a run for it. “Lets go!” He shouts. The two ran through the crowds, y/n would apologize every now and then when he would bump into a someone.
Y/n sees more imperial guards up ahead. “Shit.” His eyes darted around until he finds a perfect hiding spot. “Over here!” He grabs the mandalorian by the hand and drags him into a corner, it was small but they two were able to squeeze in. They were both chest to chest, breathing heavily. Y/n sees the imperial guards pass by them, not noticing the two. He lets out a deep breath that he was holding in.
The mandalorian did the Same, leaning his head back against the cold stone. “Best we stay here for a little while longer.” Said the prince, wiggling around to adjust himself. “Stop moving.”
“Well, sorry I’m not quiet comfortable.” Y/n hisses out, the two were moving at the same time which only ended up with y/n having both legs on either side of the mandalorian, caging him in and pressing up against him. He tries his best to hide his red face, “Are you—?”
“Shut. Up.”
It wasn’t the princes fault that he was getting a boner, the position the two were in wasnt exactly comfortable for Y/n, he feels like he’s violating him or something! The two were very close that they didn’t have enough room to even breath. “Just, hold still...” he mumbles out.
The mandalorian sighs but does as he’s told, remaining still as he waits for the other to stop moving. “Okay I give up.” He finally says in defeat, not being able to find a much more suitable position. The prince was now back to their normal position, chest to chest. Y/n slowly raised his head to come face to face with the mandalorians helmet. Without thinking the prince slowly reached up to place his hands on either side of the helmet, he was expecting mando to stop him but he wasn’t, he’s actually going to let him see his face?
As Y/n began to lift the helmet up, the mandalorian lifts his own hand up to cover the others eyes. Leaving the prince frozen in place with the helmet only Half way up, reavaling the mandalorian bottom half of his face. “Mando—“ He’s cut off by a pair of lips on his own, catching the other by surpise he swallows his own gasp.
God how long has it been since he’s last kissed a man?
The prince and mandalorian were both stuck in a tight spot with imperial guards roaming around the area.
Here the two are, kissing each other like it meant everything. Y/n’s hands were still holding up the helmet as he continued to kiss him, he felt the other bite his bottom lip causing him to moan in pleasure. The mandalorian kept his hand over the princes eyes, he couldn’t allow him to see just yet but this was okay, right?
The two continued kissing, Y/n had shifted closer to the mandalorian now.
Dyn had one leg between the princes, using his other hand to pull him by the waist. The kiss was slow but heated, full of passion. Y/n was the first to pull away, catching his breath. His hands were trembling a little and lowers down the helmet, giving the mando permission to remove his own hand now.
Dyn pants softly, looking at the other. Y/n’s face was all red and his lips were swollen, the prince groans and used his long sleeve to wipe away the sweat that had suddenly appeared around his face. The two remained silent, allowing the noisy streets to be the only thing heard between the two.
Dyn was the first one to break the silence, “That was,” he clears his throat. “Unexpected.”
Y/n lets out a dry chuckle. “Does that mean it was good?” He questions with a raised brow. The mandalorian chuckles in return, “I think it was more than just good.”
—
The two were finally able to escape from the imperial guards, getting on their horses that were waiting on the other side. Y/n groans as he climbs up, “lets move before we get spotted.” He said with a grin, riding off into the woods. The horse moved quickly, jumping over logs and small ponds that they encountered. The mandalorian wasn’t far behind, chasing after the prince as he lets out a laugh form under his helmet. Y/n laughs loudly and shakes his head, then two ride in quick speed.
Once they were far away from the town they were able to slow down this time, y/n was still smiling from the events. Sitting up tall and happily on his horse. “Someone’s happy.” Said the mandalorian. “Can’t I be happy?” The other chuckles, “You can.” The mandalorian was also smiling under his own helmet, he thought that y/n was going to force him to talk about their kiss back there but just the comfortable silence and smiles was enough to tell him that they were in good terms and could possibly mean something more.
—
“Are we there yet?”
“No.”
“Are we there yet?’
“No.”
“How about now?”
“If you keep asking I’m going to gag you.”
“Oh kinky.”
Dyn groans deeply, this has been going on for almost ten minutes. They were half way there but y/n has decided to act like any annoying child and bug the mandalorian. Asking him every second if they were anywhere close to the mandalorian home. “Are you always this annoying?”
“You asked me that literally the first day we met and the answers is always the same; yes.” The prince responds back, smiling as he sways from side to side. Trying to keep himself entertained from their travelers. “Sorry I just get bored easily when we aren’t doing anything besides riding the horse, which means that my crouch is going out be sore for the next couple of days.” He winced out, adjusting hisself on the saddle. “You wanted to run away so your gonna have to deal with the pain.”
“Your gonna have to deal with the pain.” Y/n mimics back in a childish tone, looking away from the other. “Ive got a feeling that the kid is going to take a liking towards you.” this brought y/n’s attention, perking up with a smile on his face. “really what makes you think that?”
“Your both chaotic, I can tell when the kid is teasing me without having to hear him say a word. You two are almost alike.” The mandalorian could hear the other laughing, his shoulders were shaking as he laughs. “Am I really That chaotic?” He laughs out. The mandalorian sighs. “Yes you are.”
—
He was only a few miles away from home, he could feel his own kid close by. “We’re almost there, but for now will rest here for tonight.” Said dyn. Stopping his own horse as he gets off the animal. Y/n does the same, taking the horses and tying them close to a tree, he makes sure that they are well fed and drink enough water for there travels. “I can tell that your ansty to get home.” Dyn was building them a fire when he hears the other. “I can feel the kid, he’s close which means that we are close.”
The prince sits across from mando. “This kid of yours, you once mentioned that he was special. Can I ask why?” Y/n rolled up some blankets into pillows, grabbing some extra blankets to use for the night as well. He sets one on the mandos side, “The kid has these abilites, he can sense when something is wrong or when someone is good or bad.” He explains, starting the fire as it lit up their campsite. “Heard about those abilites before, some people used to have it but their kind have somehow gone extinct.”
“Wait, wait, wait, so this kid that you adopted isnt human?”
Dyn couldn’t help but laugh at the princes expression. “No he’s not and he wont hurt anyone he’s been with me for a couple of years now.” He adds, watching the princes face change from confusion to shock and then to surprise. “Thats strange, I’ve never heard of such creatures, well expect in history books but they took place hundreds of years ago. Maybe this kid has more of his own kind, have you tried to search for anymore?”
Dyn has tried but he never found anything about the kids kind. Instead of wasting his time on searching for the kids species he might as well and raise the kid on his own. He never planned on settling down until he got the kid but that didn’t stop him from continuing on with his missions. He used to focus on his mission when he was alone but now that he had the kid he tries to balance out his work and the kid.
“Don’t think its worth it, the kid needs someone even if its not from the same species he still needs someone to take care of him.”
“And that’s were you come in, correct?” Y/n asks with a small smile and sighs. “You must’ve struggled with the kid sometimes but hey, your learning and that’s a good thing.” He shrugs, using a stick to poke at the burning wood. Watching as the ashes float away into the air. “Yeah.” The mandalorian uses the blanket that y/n rolled up as a pillow to lie on. He stares up at the stars and listens to the other talk to himself as he poked at the fire.
He began to think about the prince living with the rest of the mandalorians, maybe he can teach him the culture and the language, teach him a thing or two. He just doesn’t know if their leader would appreciate him bringing the prince along.
Dyn hears the sound of rustling from a distance, causing him to sit up quickly and pulls out his own blade, noticing the prince do the same and move clear towards him. “Stay here.” He orders, the prince slowly nods. Staying behind as he watched the mandalorian disappear into the trees. Y/n stands up, he puts his blade away and decides to use his own sword, he’s trained for stuff like this that he doesn’t have to feel afraid anymore.
Gripping his sword he continued to look over to where the mandalorian had disappeared, hearing movement coming through the trees, he bites his lip. Before he could swing his own sword he gets a glimpse of the silver helmet that the mando wold wear everyday and every second. Sighing in relief he lowered down his sword, “was anyone following us?” He asks, putting his sword back in his belt.
“Yes.” Dyn grunts out, he came out of the trees and into the light. He was holding a small child in his arms. The child cooed at the mandalorian, its ears wiggling in excitement. “It’s—“
“I’m going to kill them.” He growls out in anger, which caught y/n by surpise. He’s never seen the mandalorian angry before and he wasnt planning on seeing it again. “Kill who exactly?” He says out nervously, not wanting to pull any dangerous strings that’ll only cause the other to get even more upset.
Dyn held the child in his arms. “This is...my son, he was suppose to be back at home but somehow he ended up out here when he should be at home with someone watching over him.” He explains, holding the kid up to his covered up face. The child giggles, placing its tiny hands on the mandos helmet. “This is him? He’s adorable.” The other coos out, catching the child attention and turning to look at the stranger. The child felt a very nice and warm presence coming from the other man, he reaches out to take y/n’s index finger in his own small hand. “Now he is a strange one but also unique.” He breaths out. “He must’ve followed us, he probably knew that I was coming and found a way to get to this place without getting caught or seen.” He watched the two interact, making him smile.
The child streached his other hand out and made grabby hands for the other. Y/n is surpised by the child choice of wanting to be held by the other. He looks at the mandalorian for permission which he quickly gets once the mando nods, y/n takes the child into his arms. “Hello little one.”
Dyn smiles at the two, the child had quickly gotten attached to y/n and from the looks of it, Y/n has also grown attached too the kid, it was probably the big ears or eyes that caused the prince to fall for the kid.
“Dyn.”
“Im sorry?” Y/n turns his attention to the mandalorian.
“My name is dyn jarren.”
The prince smiles, “Dyn.” He likes the way it sounds. “I like it.” He whispered out, standing closer to Dyn. Holding the kid in his arms as both Dyn and Y/n lean forward, hsi helmet presses up agaisnt the others forehead as he smiles.
For the first time in years, Y/n finally felt like he was home.

Thank you for answering my earlier questions! I know you've written for Grant and Talbert before (I cannot remember their ship name for the life of me) would you be willing to write any modern head cannons for them? Or any general relationship head cannons for them? Those two don't get enough love together! 🙂
gralbert. talbant. grantbert? tabant? fluck? there are no good options here.
Modern Headcanons (this turned into a coffeeshop au i’m sorry):
Grant’s really just vibing through life, to be honest. Out of all his friends, he’s the one who’s got his shit most together, and that’s something to be proud of. So what if he’s still not sure exactly where he wants to be in ten years, or how he’s going to get there? It’s enough to just... exist in the moment.
That moment, currently, puts him in charge of managing a small coffee shop which has become the social hub for his entire social circle. Not only is he making great cash, he gets to stay connected with old friends and meet new people every day. Plus... he’s never short on coffee? Literally nothing to complain about.
It’s not that he doesn’t feel... well, connected is the wrong word, because he definitely is. There are just times when he feels... lonely. Chuck’s got a lot of friends, but he’s also the sort of guy who could stand in the middle of a crowded room and suddenly feel like he’s the only one there --- like no one’s really looking at him at all.
He craves attention, affection, warmth.
That’s when Dog Boy happens.
In Chuck’s defense, Dog Boy is a complete accident. The coffee shop is just supposed to be a canine free zone... so he’s completely baffled to see a guy walk in with at least five dogs, all on leashes, and order an iced coffee to go.
The guy definitely seems like he’s in a hurry --- like he really, really needs a coffee --- but Chuck can only stare. “Are those all supposed to be service dogs?” he asks.
“Um,” Dog Boy says.
Chuck points to the sign on the wall, which very clearly reads the coffee shop’s animal policy. Dog Boy lets out a weird noise somewhere between a laugh and a sob. “Okay, I’m sorry, I know, but can I please please just get an iced coffee?”
It looks like he has his hands full. More than full. This coffee is going to end up spattered on a sidewalk somewhere, and Dog Boy will probably cry. He looks like he might cry right now, just for the hell of it.
Chuck gets him an iced coffee.
That should be the end of it, but a few days later, Dog Boy comes back. He doesn’t have any dogs in tow this go ‘round, but looks five times as relaxed --- which is really, really a good look on him --- and promptly deposits a twenty dollar bill in Chuck’s tip jar. “For you,” he declares, and winks.
Chuck just stares at him. “We, uhh --- we have to split the tips between everyone on shift, and there are, like, four other people here...”
“Christ,” says Dog Boy, and plucks the bill out of the tip jar --- can he do that? is that allowed? --- and tucks it in the pocket of Chuck’s apron. “For you. You saved my life the other day, with the coffee. Can’t tell you what sort of day I was having, but...”
He smiles, and it’s the ridiculous sort of smile that shouldn’t be allowed to exist on anyone who’s not in Hollywood --- casually blinding, bright enough to leave Chuck feeling warm all over.
If he had to pick the moment he knew he was in trouble... right there. There is it.
Floyd Talbert becomes a regular in the coffee shop after that. Turns out, he knows a startling amount of Chuck’s friends. It’s not long before Tab’s popping in nearly every day to joke around with Bill and Babe, cause trouble with Liebgott, or even confer quietly with Mr. Winters in the corner. Seeing Tab becomes one of the highlights of Chuck’s day; they never really talk, but he’s got his coffee order memorized, and everytime that bold smile flashes his way, he feels a little dizzy.
Is this... what it’s like to have a crush? Strange. Unnerving. Chuck hasn’t had a crush since middle school. Why now... and why, of people, on Talbert?
One look at him and that becomes a stupid question. Who wouldn’t have a crush on Talbert?
Chuck comforts himself with that knowledge ---- no doubt, Tab’s got girls lining up around the block. What interest would he have in a barista who always adds a little extra sugar to his coffee, just because that’s how he likes it?
Tab is the sort of guy who draws people to him like moths to a porch light; he’s dynamic and popular wherever he goes. Chuck has a tight group of friends who he sticks to like glue, and would do anything for; he’s always been more content to wait in the background, observing and working silently. He doesn’t enjoy the limelight. Tab attracts it.
There’s no way they’d work together, because Tab would never notice him.
Until the day Smokey Gordon comes up to the counter with a big grin on his face, and drops something in the tip jar. “Just for you,” he declares, and winks.
It’s a folded up piece of paper... and there’s a phone number written on it. Chuck blinks for a moment, confused, before putting two and two together. Smokey gave him the number as soon as Tab left the shop.
He texts it that night. “smokey gave me this number... this is chuck, the barista from the coffee shop” Waiting restlessly on his balcony with a cigarette in hand, bouncing his leg like it’s running a marathon... Chuck has nothing to do but hold his breath.
Suddenly, the phone buzzes. It startles his cat into falling off the table. Chuck nearly jumps out of his skin.
“why am i not surprised? typical smokey” comes the response, followed by a startlingly accurate bitmoji. (He uses those instead of emojis? That’s kinda narcissistic but also really cute?)
After a moment of Chuck holding his breath, searching for how to reply (he’s a very slow texter, and it drives his friends insane) another message comes through from Tab.
“good thing he did tho, because i’d have spent a few more weeks working up the courage”
Chuck has a heart attack on the spot.
“honestly,” he replies, “i’d have skipped the number and gone straight to asking you to dinner”
“wow, a gentleman!!!” His enthusiasm is adorable. “sounds great to me. are you free friday? i know a great place for burgers”
It’s across the street from a 24-hour vet clinic.
That’s why Tab wanted to go there.
They make it through half an hour of the date with Tab obviously getting restless, and Chuck is terrified he’s boring him... until Tab abruptly sets his glass down on the counter and turns to Chuck, fresh brightness in his eyes. “Can we actually go somewhere else? I’ve got some friends you might like to meet.”
Tab works at the local vet clinic, and he’s the one tasked with walking all the dogs each afternoon. Usually they go in shifts, but on that particular day, Tab was in a rush and decided to take them all at once.
“They ran me all over town,” he declares, a funny note of pride in his voice. “I was that close to passing out... but then I saw the shop, and I saw you, and...”
He trails off, gnawing at his lower lip --- his hands are occupied roughhousing with a golden retriever, while a persistent beagle noses at his elbow. Chuck blinks at Tab over the head of an enthusiastic Yorkie, and feels something warm bloom in his chest.
“Next time, I decide the date location,” he declares. Tab grins, bright and blinding as a solar eclipse. To his own amazement, Chuck feels like he’s come home.
General Relationship Headcanons:
Chuck’s mellower than Floyd in a lot of ways. He’s less emotional, better at thinking things through; when their friends are causing havoc, Tab will eagerly be swept along in the chaos, while Chuck will follow to make sure no one causes too much trouble. They both know how to have fun, though, and have equally adventurous streaks that match well together. Hiking, rock climbing, bike riding... these are all dates they’d enjoy.
Floyd appreciates Chuck’s honesty. Sometimes he can be too blunt (”What do you think of these jeans?” “Eh, you’ve worn better.”), but he never beats around the bush, and there’s never any question whether Floyd can trust his judgement. Chuck says what he thinks, and means what he says.
Floyd is gentler in a lot of ways, and this is something Chuck isn’t used to. He’s never... been taken care of before. He’s never been doted on. Floyd loves doting on him, and this takes a lot of getting used to.
Chuck is the first one to say “I love you”, and it shocks them both. Sure, they’d been thinking it for a while, but... Chuck never thought he’d find the courage to voice it, but it slips out almost unconsciously. Floyd pauses in the middle of making dinner... then chuckles softly, almost to himself, and glances back over his shoulder. “Love you too,” he replies, like it’s the easiest thing in the world. To both their surprises... it is.
Floyd’s morals run deep, and he’s got a sensitive side that’s easily stoked. Tug on his heartstrings, and he’s open to anything... which scares Chuck, who doesn’t trust as easily. Floyd’s more than capable of taking care of himself, but a part of Chuck feels like he needs to protect him from getting hurt. That’s impossible. The first time something hits Floyd hard, and he’s left pacing into the early hours of the morning, chewing his lip raw and agonizing over what he could have done differently, Chuck stays up with him. He doesn’t try to stop him, doesn’t try to calm him down... but when Tab finally collapses in a chair, exhausted, Chuck’s the one who coaxes him up and to bed.
After that, it’s his turn to take care of Floyd. This is a role he falls into with much more ease... and Floyd, as it turns out, enjoys being pampered as much as he does giving the love.

uh complaining under the cut dont read if you dont wanna know potentially tmi stuff or dont wanna read anything triggering towards mental health and alcohol/drugs
im just SO FUCKING DONE. I work full time, not by choice, but because I have yet to be put on a part time schedule. I also am a full time student. This means the 168 hours I have in the week, 80 go to work and school, potentially more depending on the week. But im also trying really hard to take care of myself because last year when the last thing happened i fell into a really really really bad depression, relapsed, turned to alcohol and pot to cope, which i mean, isnt a bad thing, nothing wrong with a drink or two or having a blunt, but it became more of a every weekend kind of thing. I didn’t want to be sober because everything was just too hard and too much and it seemed alcohol made it better. I was really in one of my worst places in my life around October of last year to February of this year and I really don’t want to fall into that place again, so im trying hard to take care of myself. Im going to therapy, taking my medicine, caring for my health as much as I can, but its just, so hard sometimes. I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety earlier this year, which I already knew, but now that Ive started therapy and treatment I’ve been diagnosed with BPD (or at least, semi diagnosed, she didnt have time last session to give me a proper diagnoses, but she says it is highly likely thats my main “issue”) and idk. Im having a hard time coping with it I guess. I mean, ive kinda known for awhile. I could go into papers full of the shit thats happened in the last year to make me think this was a possible diagnoses, but theres a difference between just thinking it to yourself and being told “hey this is what is wrong with you.” (im just now realizing some of you dont know what bpd is so uh, if you dont, think hot and cold, thats how i am about everything, if you wanna learn more just send me an ask or a message, ill share what ive learned based on what my therapist told me). And right now is a really triggering time for me based on past trauma and current things happening in my life, that plus the fact that my depression gets worse in the winter, im really just straight up not having a good time.
Tumblr also hasnt been great for my mental health, and this is where it gets to the part where you are going to judge me so please just dont because i will probably just cry and log off for months again. All of those posts that go around that are like “sim stories to read” or “blogs I love” really fucking did me in this week because i kept waiting for someone to add me and everytime i saw a reblog where i wasnt on it i felt terrible. I hate that part about myself but i cant change it, i told my therapist about it and she said, again, its the bpd, but its just very annoying. I always find myself so fucking sad on this platform because i never feel appreciated, which is stupid because i know I am, but my brain cant turn off for five seconds just to be happy with what i have. Instead i have to convince myself no one actually cares about me and soon everyone will forget about me and my characters and ill go back to what my blog was when i started it four years ago getting one note per post while my mutuals just get more followings. I hate this. I hate this so much and if there was a way to change this part of me I would because its bullshit.
That plus the fact that I havent felt good today (i have chronic digestive/stomach issues and have since I was a kid, yeah me) so i worked all day basically just being in pain because i ate something new and my body had a very negative reaction to it. Which made me in a terrible mood since I got to work.
I really wanna work on stuff. I got in such a big mood to write yesterday but i was too tired to actually do anything and thats basically been my entire life recently. I sleep all night and as much of the day as possible and when im not asleep im tired and in a shitty mood and i know theres not much i can do about it because im not in control of really anything. Basically im just vibing, but not the good kind, more of the “i hate everything and life isnt fair but im too spiteful to die” kinda vibing.
#its not been a good time#idk#im just not really feeling much of anything anymore#ive been trying to make myself work on stuff when i dont have to work#but even thats hard because i have two days off and rarely do i feel like spending those days playing sims#instead i wanna pretend life doesnt exsit and watch a stream instead#or play sdv#i think im in a super weird mood because this week a loooooot of past memories have been brought up since i saw someone who kinda triggered#some emotions#anyway if you read this far thanks for listening to my rambles i guess#im gonna work on sims stuff#the bc will be posted at some point#im just not really in the place to do it#and i feel like a hiatus might help me again with things#but i hate doing those because it doesnt really fix anything#it more just pushed the problems away until i decide to deal with them again#anyway#im going back to bed not#night night

-
"Are you sure this thing isn't a slumber party?" Kelly criticizes. You open your locker as your friends begin to bicker on both sides of you. Something akin to petty surround sound.
"I told you! It's a night of female bonding-- a chance for us to get together and talk about what's important," Brenda explains.
"But we're doing it in our PJs," Donna interjects.
"Well, that would make sense unless you prefer to sleep in your clothes," You say, "Bren, I think it's a great idea. It could be fun!"
<!-- more -->
"Can we invite some guys to come over later? I mean, after we've talked and bonded and everything?" Kelly asks.
"Kelly, I thought what we wanted was an evening to ourselves where we don't have to think about guys, talk about guys, or worry about what we look like 'cause some guy is around. Isn't that what we said?" She nods, rolling her eyes. "So what's the problem?"
"Nothing!" She leans against the lockers, "Actually... there is one thing. I kinda made plans with this other friend of mine, Amanda Pacer. You don't know her, she's a senior, but we have been friends forever."
"So bring her," you suggest, taking out your history book and shutting your locker.
"Well... I know this may sound stupid, but I don't want her to think this is a slumber party... It's not a slumber party, right?"
-
"Brenda! Kelly, Y/N, and Donna are here to bond with you!" Brandon shouts up the stairs, laden in his all-white Peach Pit uniform. He looked so cute, this "no guy" rule was pointless. Especially when the said guys looked like that. "Hey Y/N/N," he kisses you softly, pulling you closer to him.
"Hey," you mumble. He gives you a hard, dizzying, coffee-flavored kiss as he slowly backs into the front door. You hum against him happily, "I'll pay you to stay, I'm serious. Cold hard cash." He grins, slipping his warm hands under the sides of your jacket, holding onto your hips gently.
"As much as I'd like to, I promised Nat I'd pick up this shift."
"Tell him you have other business to attend to. Like getting me out of this slumber party. Nat'll understand," you plead jokingly. One more soft, sweet kiss and he lets go of you. "Brandon..." he smiles at you adoringly and turns towards the other two girls waiting in the foyer, pretending that they weren't just watching everything you two were doing.
"Have fun, ladies," he swings the front door open and leaves as quickly as possible, knowing that if he stayed any longer you'd actually end up convincing him to stay. As one Walsh exits, another enters as Brenda comes down the stairs wearing a long, plaid nightshirt. But before she's even fully down the stairs, Kelly starts to complain.
"Brenda, this is really weird."
"Kelly, we are going to have fun! Where's Amanda?"
"Oh, she's coming later," She fidgets awkwardly, "She uh, wanted to bring her own car in case..."
"Something better came along," Donna interjects.
"I think this might be a little too down-home for her."
"Kelly, we're not going on hayrides," you cut in.
-
"Okay, we have chocolate ice cream, vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup, and whipped cream!" Brenda announces as you pour the doritos into a bowl. It's a scramble of hands and junk food as you all grab what you want.
"Do you have any other cookies?" Kelly asks.
"Yeah! I think they're in the cupboard," Brenda nods.
"Oh, I love cookies smushed in ice cream!" Andrea beams, "it's the best."
"You ever put popcorn in ice cream?" Donna wonders. The group groans in disgust. "Hey, it's really good!" You hop on the counter next to where Donna is and grab a chip
"Well, there's microwave popcorn in a bowl over there, knock yourself out," Brenda giggles, handing you your bowl of chocolate ice cream.
"Thanks," you smile, "Hey, Amanda, what do you want? Vanilla or chocolate?" You glance over to Kelly's friend as you help the girls put together their sundaes, and she's sitting alone at the kitchen table with her arms crossed, pouting.
"Nothing for me, thanks."
"Oh, come on, Amanda. You're gonna make us all look like pigs!" Kelly exclaims.
"You said it, I didn't," Amanda ostracizes. The room goes radio silent, but instead of bumming out the room, Brenda starts snorting like a pig at her while the rest of you laugh and pick up your junk food.
-
"Donna, that is so gross!" Kelly laughs, watching as her best friend shows vanilla ice cream and popcorn into her mouth all in one spoon. Your cheeks already hurt from laughing, but you couldn't stop smiling.
"I know, but I like it! I don't know why, but I do, okay?"
"This is something you can never do with guys," Kelly smirks, piling on the whipped cream to her sundae.
"What?" Andrea asks.
"Pig out!" The five of you giggle as Brenda turns to Amanda, who's once again decided to remove herself from the group.
"Do you eat on dates, Amanda?"
"Never. But I always order something expensive," her voice is sharp, and she's slumped back in the white chair in the far corner of the room.
"Why?"
"To let them know I'm worth it," she shrugs.
"I knew it was over for me and Steve when I started pigging out everytime we went out to eat," she scoffs.
"He never took you out to eat, Kelly," Donna giggles, and then everyone, (excluding Ms. Grump Pants, of course) bursts out in laughter.
-
"I am in... sugar shock." Brenda sighs, resting her head on your shoulder as you lean back onto the couch, smushed up against the other girls.
"I feel like I just gained ten pounds," Andrea groans.
"So, what do you guys want to do now?" Kelly ponders.
"Ooh, lets rent Pretty Woman!" Donna suggests.
"Donna, you've seen that movie 300 times," Kelly snickers.
"It's dependable. You know, sometimes I think about running away and becoming a hooker on Hollywood boulevard," she puts her fist up to her heart, fawning, "just so I can meet Richard Gere."
"There's only one problem... you're not Julia Roberts."
"Look, we're not going to rent a movie... or become prostitutes," you tease Donna, "The whole point of this was so we could talk. Andrea, go get your Ouija board."
-
You settle back down onto the couch after coming very close to crapping your pants because of what you thought was the Ouija board... which just ended up being David Silver sneaking creepy pictures of you guys through the window. You breathe deeply as your heart rate settles down. Amanda checks her watch and scoffs.
"It's after midnight."
"What, do frat boys turn into pumpkins?" Brenda bites sarcastically.
"No, they turn into drunken slobs." You sure made my night," she complains.
"Amanda, you didn't have to come!" Kelly barks.
"What? And miss all the fun? The party games?" She laughs sardonically, "I don't want to leave anymore. Everyone's ruined my night," she takes off her beige coat and throws it on the chair. "It's my turn to ruin their's. Okay everyone. I've got a game if you're up for it. Skeletons in the closet. Everyone sits in a circle, and the person in the middle has to answer all their questions as honestly as possible. The kind of question is up to you, whatever you feel like asking. Of course, the better the question, the better the game."
-
"Go ahead. Ask me anything," Andrea smiles nervously.
"Why does everybody call you 'Awwwndrea?'" Amanda starts.
"Excuse me?"
"What are you, British? I mean... Awwwwndrea?" Amanda guffaws.
"That is pretty pretentious," Kelly adds.
"Kelly," you warn her.
"It's pronounced both ways. But An-dree-uh is a little boring and common. I like to be different."
"Good answer," you smile.
"So, am I through?"
Amanda studies her carefully, "No. Not yet... have you ever slept with a guy before?" What the hell was wrong with this girl?
"That's... a little personal. But uh... no. No, I have never slept with a guy before. Yet."
"Well, if you could sleep with any guy in school, who would it be?"
Andrea chuckles anxiously, looking down at the ground. "Come on, you guys. I can't answer that..."
"Yeah, you can. You can trust us, Andrea... well," you glance at Amanda, "most of us, at least."
"Uh... I don't know. I guess... I guess uh..."
"Brandon?" Kelly cuts in.
"What?" You glare at Kelly.
"No." Andrea answers, "No. Not Brandon. No... it would have to be Hans Fleischman. He is this incredibly gorgeous lifeguard who pulled me out of the water when I was stung by a jellyfish at Zuma beach last summer." You adjust in your seat uncomfortably while the Kelly snickers in disbelief at Andrea. "Hey, what is this? Brandon is just a friend."
"Wait-- wait a second. Is this the same Brandon that's all over her everyday?" Amanda laughs out, "Sweetie... get a life. You like him. Everybody already knows." You sure didn't. "And he likes her." You don't even dare to look up from your thumbs. What the hell were you supposed to do in this situation? Sure, you encouraged her to answer it but you didn't think it would be Brandon. You would feel weird comforting her, but you still feel weird just sitting there and letting her get harrassed.
"Okay... okay. So it-- it is Brandon." Her eyes well up as she stutters through her words. The room is silent for a moment before you hop to your feet.
"Well, this has been a blast," you huff, "I'm gonna go get a soda. Anyone else have plans to seduce my boyfriend? Kelly? Donna? Hey, how about you, Amanda?"
-
After Kelly's turn, to which she described her traumatic first sexual experience, and Brenda's where she describes how she betrayed her best friend back in Minneapolis... you were really starting to hate this game.
"Come on, Donna, you've gotta have some secrets," Kelly encourages.
"I don't! I tell you guys everything!"
"If you could go out with any guy in school, who would it be?!" Brenda asks. Let me guess, Brandon?
"Greg Houseman. You know that, she never stops talking about him," Kelly sighs.
"What is the most dishonest thing you've ever done?" You ask, curling your legs up to your chest. She pauses to think for a moment.
"Nothing..."
"Didn't anybody in your family go insane or something? Anything?"
"No... we're all really normal," she shrugs. The thing was, she's right. You've been to her house. Her mother is great, her dad's really nice, her house is perfect... she was completely normal.
"You know what your problem is, Donna?" Amanda prompts, "Your life is totally boring. Anyone who can't dredge up one secret about themselves is either lying or a total zero."
"That is not true," you snap.
"Why, what are you hiding, Y/N/N?"
"Nothing, Amanda."
"Oh, really? That's not what I hear... or what I've seen."
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"Get in the circle," she smirks, this time deviously. Dangerously. You follow her orders, moving from the floor to the chair.
"What's your favorite movie?" Brenda asks.
"Rebel without a Cause."
"What's your favorite color?"
"Baby pink," you watch Amanda out of the corner of your eye, getting more and more frustrated at the boring questions.
"Oh, come on! You guys are such a drag!" She leans forward, smirking, "What's going on with you and Dylan McKay?" You look at her confused.
"He's dating her," you gesture towards Brenda, "Not me." Amanda shakes her head immediately, as if she knew you were going to say that.
"Do I need to dumb it down for you, sweetheart? What happened at the Bel Age a few months ago, y'know, when you jumped him?"
"What?" Brenda says quietly, her voice breaking. She looks at you as tears start to brim her eyes.
"Bren, wait a second--"
"Did you sleep with my boyfriend?" Your jaw goes agape and you laugh sourly in shock.
"You really think I'd sleep with Dylan?!" A pit of guilt was forming in your stomach as you tensed up.
"I don't know what to think, Y/N! All I know is you two spend an awful lot of time together alone and now I'm hearing that you pounced on him!" she snaps. Oh my god. You couldn't believe this was happening.
"That's not what happened, Bren!"
"Fine!" She scoffs bitterly, "what happened, then?"
"So, I was at the Bel Age a few months ago, Brandon had just gotten the job at the Peach Pit..."

"I don't wanna go home yet," you told him. The Porsche rumbled as Dylan warmed it up. He raised an eyebrow at you as he leaned back.
"Where do you want to go?"
"Anywhere you want to take me." Those would be words you would later come to regret. Asking a hot guy with a leather jacket and a Porsche to have his way with you? Bold move. Dumb move, too. He could've taken you anywhere. Baja, the abandoned elementary school, anywhere. But where did he take you? The Bel Age hotel.
When you walked in he popped the radio on and you sat down as a Gloria Estefan song played quietly throughout the hotel room. Dylan was over at the wet bar, pouring himself a glass of scotch. Looking back, it was the only time you'd ever seen him drink something in moderation.
"You drink?" He asked, looking back at you.
"I could start," you shrug. And that was the first of many bad decisions you'd make in that hotel room. He grabs a second pint glass, but you weren't paying much attention to him as he clanked around, trying to pour you something that wouldn't make you gag.
He hands you the concoction and sits down beside you, his legs against yours. A little closer than normal, but you didn't think anything of it. Fidgeting anxiously, you began to drink whatever it was he gave you. It was new, being alone with him like that. Sure, you could hang out with him in groups but... just you and him? You tilted the glass back, letting the smooth and surprisingly digestible liquor flow down your throat until there was nothing left in your glass. This stuff was supposed kill anxiety, right? He eyes you up. Peculiarly, but not critically.
"Thirsty?"
"Yeah, you could say that." He would continue to fill your glass, and his own, for that matter, all night. He'd put on his Road House VHS tape somewhere in the middle. And you were watching it. You really were. But as the movie went on longer, you got closer. A fairly innocent movie night (the first of many) turned into a night full of regrets.
His hand was on your leg right before the first kiss happened, thumb drawing dizzying little circles on your thigh as he watched the movie. You're sure if you showed any signs of discomfort he would've stopped-- that fact gave you peace in the moment. But the last thing you wanted him to do was stop. So he didn't. And neither did you. It wasn't until later, when his lips were trailing down your jaw, hands pushing your dress up, and his own white t-shirt was somewhere on the floor next to you. That's when it came to a crashing halt. Removing his lips from your neck, he sighed.
"What is it?" You asked. The air between you two was intense, sensitive. One move and he'd be back on top of you, starting the cycle all over again.
"What about Minnesota?" He slides you off of his lap in one swift motion, but his hand was lingering on your hip.
"What about Brandon?"
"Come on, you've seen how he is around you. I don't want to get in the way of that, mess anything up."
"You're not messing anything up. If Brandon was interested he would've made a move already."
Cut to you, current day, girlfriend of the mentioned boy, "Hah... whoops."
"But either way... this is a bad idea, isn't it?" You sheepishly picked up the shirt from the floor and handed it back to him. "So," you cleared your throat, "Friends?"
"Yeah," he chuckled, fiddling with the shirt in his hand. The energy in the room was different then, awkward. Laughable. But friendly.
"And that was it," you finish, "We're friends. Kissing him now would be no different than kissing Donna or Kelly."
"You wouldn't have kissed him if you didn't like him!"
"I do like him. As a friend," you plead, "Bren, I've been supporting you guys since day one, I would never do something to hurt you." You search her eyes for something. A little bit of waivering, forgiveness, pity. Anything at this point. Stupid Amanda and her stupid skeleton game. Brenda avoids your gaze for a moment.
"And nothing's happened since then?" She chokes out. You see her shoulders rise and fall as she takes in a shaky breath.
"Nothing's happened since then."
She lets out a deep sigh, almost out of relief, but tears are still threatening to spill from her eyes "Okay... I guess I understand." As she says that, it's like every muscle in your body lets go of the stress it had been holding for the past few weeks. You really hate secrets.
"Uh, Bren... I have a confession to make," Kelly pipes up from the side of the room, "After you started going out with Dylan I tried to get a date with him." Oh shit.
